  • On this day back in 1998 Michael Owen scored a superb solo goal against Argentina at the World Cup in France. He played with some great players during his international career, but which of them made it into his England dream team?

Owen is still so underrated. 40 international goals by the time he was 26... Had he not had his injuries, Rooney would still be 20 goals behind him for England.

Aditya 82003 Rooneys fitness? As in not being unfit or injured? The guys last game for England was when he was 33. Owen last played at 26 or 27 and he was only 13 goals behind. He was scoring an average of 6 or 7 goals a year (including important goals in World Cups). So for you to say Rooney’s fitness let him down, after playing all those extra years is strange at best. It was Owen that was ravaged by injuries!!

An almost religious dedication to 4-4-2 is what stopped England from winning any trophies or even making the finals during 1996-2006. Such a shame since they had a lot of talented players I mean just the players Owen left out Terry, Sol, Hargreaves, Lampard, McManaman would have made most international XI's

    • @jasonrogers469

England always lacked a DMF, except a single great WC 2006 performance by Owen Hargreaves, who was the best player. But Hargo was hammered by injuries.
Always a tough choice by Sven Goran cause you wanted to fit in Becks, Scholesy, Gerro and Lamps, and ALL of them liked to have their back covered by a pure DMF like Roy Keane in UTD or Essien for Chelsea.
Still, all those midfield players loved to tackle, their work rate was amazing, so in theory they could have played together .
But theory is one thing. Chemistry wasnt REALLY there, toxic media and fans always plagued the team, and they could never Truly FIND that winning rhythm, except in a few qualis.
Despite all that nonsense, they lost to a GOAT Brasil team, to Portugal twice on pens, to an amazing German team, to Italy on pens, etc etc. This generation was plagued by some bad luck to add to their roster issues...
Still, had they played with 5 in the midfield, considering how much goals Gerrard and Lampard have been scoring, that would have been the best option. Get rid of the 4-4-2. Give absolute freedom to Gerrard and others fall in behind, covering each other.
    4-3-2-1
    Beckham-Scholes-Hargreaves
    Lampard-Gerrard
    Rooney
Thats a winning team right here. I guess lol

      @gonnaw1n Před 4 lety +1

@@ed1726 you can't possibly say that because of the different eras means you can't compare them. It's like saying Terry was better than Bobby Moore but they are different eras. Terry was lucky to be in an era where there was more focus on fitness, mental strength, people looking after them etc...both Adam's and Moore had their demons outside of football...modern footballers will always be ahead of the past because of the modern day techniques and conditions to help them succeed.

People always bang on about Scholes, Stevie and Frank in Midfield. Probably youngsters that don't remember Scholes retired from international football in 04. Stevie and Frank were still developing then. They would peak years later. An in form, Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard at the peak of their powers was never available for selection. And yes, managers did try to convince Scholesy to come back, most notably Cappello for 2010 - and he declined.

Lack of a true number 6 and a playmaking 10 always seem to hamper England at international level. A number 6 like a Pirlo or Xavi who could take the ball on the half turn and progress it forward quickly through midfield and a number 10 who could as the Italians say “reinvent” the game with a killer pass against deep lying defences in the knockout games.

The greatest of all time is probably Teddy Sherringham, first top scorer of the Premier League, intelligent, selfless players player, one reason Shearer scored so much, won an English team the country's first ever Trebble. Underrated too. Except the Chelsea players, your picks for subs look good to me.
