      Hans-edward Jaque it was good. I would lose the bit off the top about imagining the audience naked and go straight into the religious stuff. Towards the end, you need a few more jokes mixed in with the message. Point out ways god is being an asshole, but make perhaps make them more lighthearted. “If God exists and is responsible for everything - that means he created the Kardashians on purpose” (for example). Keep it up. You’ve got a good thing going!!

      Don't worry about it. Just relax - everyone is in the same boat and standup is usually very supportive. Everyone is nervous about putting themselves out there - myself included. But you're there to learn. You're not there to "be the best". There is no best in comedy. You just have fun and be funny the way you like and the rest will come. It'll be great I am sure. Being one of the youngest just means you have even more time to be the best comedian you can be. I wish I had started at 13!!

    So I feel like I could do comedy. Growing up, ppl would always say to try it out and I would ignore it. It wasn’t until I did research on writing bits - that I noticed I had naturally built structure.. which made me want to try even more.
    My main questions are:
    do I just try one of the stories out?
    If they aren’t reactive to the one I choose, should I find a way to transition to a different story?
    Or is there a technique to gage which story would be best for the crowd early on?

    • @markbennettcomic
      @markbennettcomic  Před 4 lety +3

      Sorry - I must have missed this comment. Yes, to answer your question - just try your stories out. Some of the best comedians are storytellers. If the audience isn't reacting to your story - I wouldn't just switch it up halfway through the story. If your story is interesting, people will want to hear how it turns out. Plus, if the end of your story is the best part (as it should be), then give the story a chance to succeed by finishing it. There is no technique to gage which story will work or not. Hell, sometimes a story will work on the early show and bomb on the late show. Comedy is an unpredictable process. So the best thing to do is to go up on stage with your best stories and let 'er rip!!

      First of all thank you. It took 9 months since I wrote this comment, but I finally did it man! I tried to get on stage a few months ago and it took all my courage... and then I showed up too late to get a spot. I was so disappointed with myself, I just got hammered at the comedy club bar. Then later that night I got arrested. Not the most auspicious start to my comedy career.
      Then this week I finally worked up the nerve to try again. I showed up an hour before signup to make SURE I got a spot. And I got it! Five minutes for five bucks at the People’s Improv Theater in NYC in front of 15 or so other open mikers. As soon as I got on stage, I followed your advice and got the mic stand out of my face. Then it was on!
      My man, by my standards, I killed! My written stuff did okay but some of the off the cuff stuff did even better. It was probably just beginner’s luck, but damn do I feel good about it. Now I’m itching to get back on stage. Sorry for the essay but you said to tell you how it went!
      Now I gotta thank you again for the guidance. Getting on stage is hard! But your advice made it easier and made me more prepared. All the best to ya amigo!

The key is to get up there and start talking, prepare for failure and use that to improve the next time. The more you go out and perform the better you'll be. Hey, Mark! I’m 16 and I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to do with my life. And I think stand up comedy is something I’d really love to do. I know I’ll probably get stage fright at first but do you think I should go around and practice on my friends?? And other people like family members and what not? The whole idea scares me a bit. Taking a huge chance. I live in Canada and I was wondering, do you have any clubs in mind that would be good to start at? I’d just like to see what your view stands.

    • @markbennettcomic
      @markbennettcomic  Před 4 lety +1

      If you're in Ontario - I would start at Absolute Comedy. I never liked testing out stuff in front of friends or family, personally. I find it too awkward. I find it easier to just try it in front of strangers. If you have some friends who are funny and you trust them and they are supportive - you could try it. But myself, no one knew I was going to do comedy until long after I did it.

    I don't have a great voice. It sounds tinny and scratchy. Will that be a hindrance in delivering jokes? Am planning on my first gig in front of a huge audience in 6 weeks time assuming the audition goes well. :D

      Well think of Josh Blue he has cerebral palsy and is a very successful comic. His disability is very visible and he has transformed his emotional pain and anxiety from being misunderstood constantly and transformed that into great comedy. Basically it's like this trauma plus time equals comedy. If you get up there and you really like it don't give up

    I've never done standup before but I really want to. Thing is what I've noticed is I don't really have jokes.. I have funny stories where there are jokes kinda naturally sprinkled in to the overall story/point, so I'm not entirely sure how I'd save the best for last. I went to a show where Olan Rogers did something similar

    • @markbennettcomic
      @markbennettcomic  Před 4 lety +1

    • @markbennettcomic

      Jokes on the spot aren’t going to work usually at a comedy club. Try to think of your funniest stories and write them down (or say them out loud). Your anxiety will go down once you know what you’re going to say and how you’re going to say it. If you’re dreaming of doing standup, just go for it and write out your set. You’ll be fine!!

      Inspired Champion write stuff out for sure. Standup almost never goes well if you just go up and “wing it”. You can improv with the audience a little if they feel like chatting, but with standup, people expect you to bring something to the table. They expect you to have something to say. At its core, standup is social commentary / satire. And hell, if you end up improving the whole time because you get inspired or the audience wants to chat - you can always do that, but you need to have something in your back pocket ready to pull out. Always go up with a plan. Throw it out the window if you want - but go up with a plan.

    • @markbennettcomic
      @markbennettcomic  Před 4 lety

      Ottawa is a great city to do comedy. Don’t worry about expanding to other cities right now. If you have a chance to go to another city and they happen to have a comedy club, try to perform there, but don’t look to go spend money doing it. I know it sounds strange, but stay where you are and do shows. When you start doing well, you will be booked on paying gigs and some of them will be out of town. It happens very naturally. You’ll travel with other comics and expenses are split and often covered. If the opportunity comes to play in another city and it doesn’t cost you anything - great. But for now, focus on doing well and the paying gigs will come and performing in other cities is a matter of time. There are situations where you may have to travel to another city to “get your foot in the door” or audition for a club, but these will not be paying gigs.

      Pistol Pete That’s always a good way to start writing jokes. If your friend says something, and you follow it up with a funny line - write the whole thing down and try to retell it as a story. A lot of comedians find a way to use lines that come up in conversation.

  • @charleshurstreinvention3959

    And now a tip on how to take your shot. Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles

      Don’t worry about it. Just be yourself. My advice is not to be offensive on purpose. Making fun of yourself is definitely a good way to to go. But remember, edgy comedians are still trying to connect with the audience. When people get “offended” it is usually because they are upset at hearing something they don’t want to hear. Like if you say you don’t like religion, for example” sometimes that offends people. But don’t outright try to make people upset - the best edgy comedians are well liked by the audience. Always strive to be likeable. Pete Davidson, Bill Burr - they are very likeable. You’ll be fine!!
