Can you be discovered at open mics? And if not, where do you recommend going to get exposure?

1.) Go to live comedy shows 2.) Write out a 5-7 min set 3.) Put your best joke at the end 4.) Rehearse your set 5.) Call into amateur nights consistently

Does the CD have to be from recordings of LIVE performances with audience response? Or can it be studio Comedy? In other words, without an audience, laughing, and responding? I’ve done five different, five minute standup sets, and am putting together a sixth one now. Next goal is to try to put together a 15 minutes and a half hour set. Obviously a half hour of standup is what you recommend for the CD, so I’m curious what way to go when I’m ready to record 30 minutes.

The SM58 is a great, legendary mic, sure, but there are many dynamic mics out there that sound much better. But I know that's mostly a subjective thing. Reliable, good mic, definitely, but the best? In my humble opinion, not even close. I got a little excited when you said Behringer and I thought YES! HOPEFULLY, HE'S GOING TO PULL OUT THE XM-8500 (which I think sounds generally better than the SM58 for considerably less). Then you pulled out the 1800s. My heart sank lol.

The cheap lav sounded best, solely because it was the closest. But even a $1000 Sennheiser MKH 416 shotgun is going to sound echoey if it's too far away, that's just the physics of how sound waves travel. But if it's right above you, maximizing the unidirectional aspect by pointing straight at your sound source barely out of frame, a decent shotgun can work really well.
