- www.ApogeeRockets.com - A common question rocketry newbies have about using Estes black-powder motors in larger mid-power kits is: "where is the engine block ring?"
When we tell them you don't even want one in your rocket that has a screw-on engine retainer, they have this confused look on their face.
Yes... there is a disadvantage to putting in an engine block in such a rocket. So in this video, I'll show you why you don't want one, and then how to properly restrain the Estes motor in the kit. - Věda a technologie
Thank you for this video! I was stressed about doing this to get my rocket going.
Thank you! I did not know that automotive stores sold quarter inch body tape.
Great video! I didn't realize adapting black powder engines to screw-on retainers was so simple.
Very helpful video thank you!
I just got my order from Apogee a few days ago! I can’t wait to go flying next weekend!
It would be cool to have premade glue on cardboard retainer rings for the aft end of the Estes motors.
Awesome video, as this is something I researched not long ago! The model company Tamiya also sells 1/4" (6mm) masking tape, and I've used that successfully for making thrust rings on Estes engines.
Thanks Tim! An easy adaptation for Estes motors. Thank you, sir!
This is very similar to headspacing a rifle cartridge. Some headspace off the shoulder and others off a belt at the rear of the case.
made many thrust rings from tape years ago, but haven’t flown a kit in decades. not even sure where a flying club is here in SC.
someday. never too old to outgrow model rockets.
This is a great video! Can't wait to use it in my designs!
Estes motors are 24mm, my pro series 2 rocket has a screw on 29mm motor mount..I went to Ebay and got the adapter to make it fit.
I'm glad this video helped you.

Why hasn't Estes figured out a way to make their casings with a retainer?
Ask them...
