It was a guitar 🎸 part penned by Michael Tighe in his early teens that sparked “So Real” (1994).
Tighe recalled : “I composed the chord progression for ‘So Real’ when I was 14 or 15. When I first met Jeff [Buckley], I played that for him and he was really taken with it. A year or two later, at some of the rehearsals for their first tour, he was like, ‘Remember that song you played on your bed a couple of years ago at your parents’ place?’ So I started playing it, and he got behind the drums and came up with that beat and started singing the melody of the chorus.”
Tighe added that the lyrics came last : “We did ‘So Real’ in an afternoon. That night, Jeff was feverishly writing in his notepad, then he took a walk around Hell’s Kitchen, came back and recorded the vocals for it. So I think he wrote most of the lyrics that night. IT WAS PRETTY BEAUTIFUL THE WAY IT ALL CAME TOGETHER SO QUICKLY.” 💙🎶💚
May you rest in peace, Jeffrey Scott Buckley (1966 - 1997)… 🌹

Jeff once stated in a written interview that, as for Mick Grondahl (bass player), there were many bass players out there that could play rings around him, but it wasn't about technical abilities: it was about the chemistry (as cliché as it may sound).
As for Michael Tighe (guitar player), he had never been in a band before, and still, Jeff recruited him when the Grace recording sessions were in an advanced stage. Again: chemistry.
Matt Johnson was a very competent drummer. His drumming in "Grace" and "Dream Brother" speaks for itself.
Underrated backing band, for sure. And they lasted together for like a little over a year only, when Matt decided to step out after the Australian tour back in early 96.

Band chemistry is EXTREMELY important especially with music as dynamic as his was. When you have a band with good chemistry it’s like everyone knows what everyone is going to do before they even do it

Mick Grøndahl was kind of original/different in the way he played his instrument! Jeff saw value in that and that's why he wanted Mick to be in his band. Probably there was some chemistry there as well.

This song was my introduction to Jeff Buckley.
I remember very vividly the moment when I first listened to it many years ago. It was playing on the radio in my Walkman (yeah, I'm that old) while I was jogging, and the exhaustion caused by the exercise combined with the surprise from what I was hearing made me stop and lie down on the grass to pay close attention.
That feeling of discovering something unique and so magical, the power of the music, and... that voice! What an unforgettable experience!
And since then, I haven't been able to stop wondering what other musical creations this man would have delivered had he not decided to go to that damn river on that day.

*Brandon Boyd on Jeff Buckley:* czcams.com/video/RkSbdrjJsug/video.html&t
GAP: “Who is your favorite musical artist?”
Brandon Boyd: “Jeff Buckley. When he came out everyone was a little afraid to commit. Well not everybody, but a lot of popular artists were afraid to commit completely to what they were doing. They kind of used irony as a sheet around them, kind of protecting them from having to own up to what they said. Not only did he have one of the best voices I have ever heard, he was one hundred percent committed to what he was doing. He was unabashedly romantic in his lyrics, and the way he sang. He got some flak for it while he was alive, and it sucks because when someone dies people start to say maybe he was awesome, and they begin to analyze it differently. For those reasons, and I can go on forever about the guy. His voice has been influential to a lot of current artists, to people who might not even admit it, really. Just his range and where he would even try to go with his voice. The guts to go from one octave to two above. Not a lot of people are doing that...so also his falsetto influence has influenced me as well.”
