Ford 10R80 Transmission Complete Fluid & Filter Service (Tips and Tricks)

  • In this video I show the steps and procedures necessary to complete a service on a Ford 10R80 transmission. ford recomends you service this transmission every 60k miles. At first glance this seems like a very difficult job since there are multiple heat shields and an auxiliary cooler that you need to move out of the way in order to drop the pen. But overall this is not too difficult of a job. Since this transmission pan does not have a drain bolt, you’ll need to unbolt the pan in order to drain the transmission fluid and expose the filter. A little check that I show in the video is to siphon out some of the fluid before you drop the pan. This makes the job a lot cleaner. Below are links to parts and tools are used during this video. If you have any questions or comments feel free to leave something in the comment section. Thank you for watching

    Idea for filling trans. If you have no leaks from trans, then it should be at the factory filled level when you start this project. Why not check the level on the stick while cold (after running trans for 2 min.). And after dropping pan and replacing filter, bolting pan back up, fill it back to the original cold level you found in the beginning (after running engine/trans for two min. again)? Shouldn't the two level readings match?

    I wished I had just done this service myself, but had our 19' Raptor in the shop to replace a leaky driver's side valve cover(which they forgot to re-install the fill tube on). I brought in my own Motorcraft fluid/filter and a day after getting the truck back from service, it started slipping up on the highway in 10th gear...a few miles after, I was able to stop safely(trans was up to 220 degrees) and fluid was coming out under the transmission. Ended up having to get it towed back to the dealer. Only 35K miles on it, but I tow and do some offroading, so I am overly diligent with my maintenance and want to have the transmission service done every 30K.
    Anyways, great video on doing the fluid/filter change.

    I would definitely recommend replacing the stock OEM transmission pan with an aftermarket aluminum or steel pan with a drain plug. I did a quick Google search and there are a few options for the f150 which would make life easier. However this may void the warranty of your vehicle, so I would check into that first especially if you got a newer truck with low miles you would want to still be able to use that warranty without any issues

I've never had an ounce of tranny problems, so I'll stick with this method.

      Ask ford. This is directly from the service manual and it how you service the transmission.

    • @michalp2362
      @michalp2362 Před 2 lety

      That’s how you service most modern transmissions. It’s more of a fluid refresh vs full flush which btw is not recommended

    • @igchavo4701
      @igchavo4701 Před 2 lety +3

      That’s why when I change trans fluid and filter I replace pan with one that has a drain plug then after a couple of days later - drain through plug /refill / and repeat until you are satisfied with the clarity of the fluid. If you do this you don’t have to do all the extra work- especially for this design!!!

      Ummm.....this seems to be the standard among most (if not all) mfg's for quite a few years....my 2013 Toyota, 2019 Ford, and 2021 Jeep all have the "sealed" transmissions as the mfg love to call them. A drain bolt? I guess you don't have a car from this century? I mean even my 2002 F350 didn't have a drain on the trans.....so.....
