  • I saw various caliper depth bases that are available for $18 to over $50 for a Mitutoyo and decided to make my own.

    Nice little evening project - might have to make one. Odd about some calipers. I have two that I purchased at Harbor Freight over 10 years ago. Both work fine and the batteries last for ages.

      Yes, I really enjoyed making this. And you're right it's hit and miss whether you get a caliper with good battery life.

    Beautifully done, including the recovery from the mishap with the collet. I don't have the space for a mill or lathe anymore, so I was thinking of trying to make a base in a form something like yours in Shapelock (polycaprolactone) or hardwood.

      Good luck with that, or you can just purchase one of the inexpensive ones.

    Missed this one somehow. I would have designed this with a rounded interior corner, and then struggled to figure out how to hold it to make the cut.

      Yes, I almost went with a rounded corner, but it became challenging to engineer so I gave up on the idea.

    Nice project Guy, I will have to try that design for myself. Yours turned out very nicely, enjoyed the vid, cheers and thanks!

    The 2 mitoyotos that keeps running out of battery is fakes unfortunately. Or if its branded differently (hard to see on video) then it is likely bad clone of mitoyoto. There was few years of people selling fakes that had firmware bug where it can't turn off.

      The only Mitutoyo that I mentioned was the analog one on the right. The ones with the battery issue were definitely very inexpensive unbranded ones that I paid no more than $20 for.

      @@GuyMarsdenMakesStuff Indeed. That is why I added possibility of branded differently. :) Many of unbranded was also clones of mitoyoto calipers with bugged power management also.

      Nice little project. Gotta make one. How thick is metal?

    • @GuyMarsdenMakesStuff
      @GuyMarsdenMakesStuff  Před 10 měsíci

      @stephenpeterson3206 the metal was just a scrap piece that I had laying around .35" 'thick and it's 3 in wide - dimensions are non critical except for the width which could be longer.
