    I would say that with the Birman you would need 2 for they are prone to separation anxiety. Besides that although they have long hair they do not have an undercoat and are considered to be low maintenance. Everything you asked for you will find in this cat. Most purebred Velcro cats need a little buddy though especially if you are out of the house for more than 4 hours at a time. They are the #1 cat in France and extremely popular in Europe and Asia. They will love you unconditionally. Someone mentioned the Persian; unless if you want to give them a daily intense brushing stay away for their grooming needs are intense. Ragdolls are lovely too but much larger; quality Birmans are not easy to find though in North America so beware of backyard breeders for you might end up with a mix of something or another that they will try to pass off as a Birman. A true Birman Ragdoll mix would also be a great choice but again I would recommend 2 but both of the same sex though; I personally would say get 2 males of any of the above mentioned Velcro breeds; they are usually known to be more affectionate but this is not to diminish the fact that the females of these breeds make wonderful companions too. You will have to of course neuter/spay them (responsible breeders of purebred usually will make you sign a no breeding contract anyways) and please do not declaw them. A good cat tree or two with several scratching posts plus quality interactive toys around your house or condo would be just fine to keep them and you happy. I would personally feed them a high protein low carb diet for they are all prone to gaining weight and make sure to have at least one good sized, clean and low dust liter box per floor.

    I have 2 Birman cats, a girl and a younger boy and they are the joy of my life. Their personalities are on the opposite spectrum - my girl is a little shy and likes affection on her own terms, she will come to you when she wants attention and will insist on it. She likes to be adjacent to everything you do and likes to observe everything, i call her my supervisor. My boy is a velcro cat, he follows us around the house and insists on spending every minute of the day at our side. He sleeps in bed with us and is a bit territorial. He is most definitely the alpha in the house. I love them both to pieces and they are so easy to care for and I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.

      @@siyudeng6269 they are fussy eaters that is for sure, but even within a breed there are individual preferences. Our cats like things in soup form. They get a Sheba soup in the morning. In the evening they will have Miamor pouch with either fish or chicken (they don't like beef), for night time they get a Miamor soup mixed with purina gold chicken, tuna or salmon. Anything containing carrots or tomato they won't touch. They like pretty much all fish but will only eat chicken, no other meat. As I say it's probably an individual thing related to our cats. Hope it helps.

      Birmans are still very popular in Australia and New Zealand. Birmans in the USA have suffered due to cat judges placing too much emphasis on the markings, resulting in the breed becoming smaller and more delicate. This may be the reason that they are becoming less popular there.

      It’s because they’re usually very expensive if you wanna get a healthy one from top breeders and they’re much more expensive than Persians or Ragdoll. Pet quality is cheaper ($1500-2000) but show cat quality (no breeding allowed) like $3000-5000) then breeding show cat quality like $10k-12,000), they’re not cheap. If you got cheaper one they’re not pedigreed.

    I might be the luckiest cat owner in the world. I adopted Scan from my local SPCA at 8 weeks and took her to the vet who told me she was Burmese which I believed until just recently. After looking at many pictures, I am now convinced she was a Seal Point Bermin. I lost her last month to cancer and am still devastated and not sure that I'll ever have another. She was extremely loyal, vocal, and easy to care for her coat because it never mattered. I recommend this breed to anyone who wants to own a cat and if you're half as lucky as I, you'll live a fulfilled pet life.

      Same here. Adopt from shelters! My roommate, years before I moved in, visited a few shelters, was open to cats who had behavior problems, and got chosen by a terribly matted cat who would lash out at other cats with her declawed paws. The shelter said was Himalayan but had no papers to prove it, only that her previous home had dogs and young children-bad idea for a himmie!
      Roommate didn't care, and Dedee grew to become a loving companion since. It took work to help her learn how to cope with her anxiety and calm down, but now she is so full of slow-blink smiles and tail-up regality.

      Lucky for those who can find "pure" breed in shelters, here in Switzerland, Birmans are from 1,200CHF-1,600CHF..Birmans are still NO. 2 in France - Europe has more responsible cat owners esp. here, we have NO FERALS or extremely rare, all cats/pets are chipped and vaccinated - NO RABIES in this country as well...Population is well controlled and most pet owners are very responsible including pet insurance! Our pedigree Turkish angora died as she liked to go outside and got ran over by a truck and due to her extreme injuries, we had to put her down, cried for a week...So, now we are driving to FRANCE to see 5 Birman boys that are Pedigree with LOOF daddy champion. They are blue-tabby-point :-) Want them to be iNDOOR and/or walk on leash for much training needed! Wish us luck!

    What I will say will piss off a lot of people.
    The happiest (male) Birman cat is one that enjoys total outdoor freedom and is in possesion of his own territory!
    Our first Birman Ariodante came over from our neighbours ten years ago, moved in with us and nothing could stop him, he was fed up with the tensions and stress that came when they divorced in an ugly way. The neighbours respected his decision and he was with us until kidney failure got him 7 years later. Within a month we brought in young 3-y old Kosmo (we were lost without a Birman), an indoor cat until then. Within weeks Kosmo instinctively took control of Ariodante's turf, our football pitch sized garden and yard, premium real estate in cat terms. Both (seal point) cats extremely good at fending of the competition, and steering clear of problems with strangers, cars, dogs, etc. Not seeking fights but not avoiding them either if needed. Going out day or night, summer or winter, rain or snow, doesn't matter to them. It gives them pride and fulfillment, social interaction with the neighborhood cats, distraction, play, grass to eat, mousing opportunities (birds see them from a mile away!), and exercise (Kosmo's tracker shows making his rounds he walks 30-40 km in a week!). We give them the best anti-tick, wurms etc. treatment, no problem there. Once used to freedom to go about their business you can't restrict and lock them up again (they would die of frustration), and why would you, they are so incredibly happy out and about ,and so social, lovable and cuddly indoors with the whole family, for them and us it's cat nirvana. We believe this narrative about nobler cat breeds having no need to go outside and keep a territory is plain false. In our book locking them up inside quarters prevents them from fully reaching their potential for happiness, and if they could talk they would totally agree. Greetings and meow from Kosmo!

    What’s y’all’s opinion on school? I won’t always have a family member at home, but I have a puppy. Do you think I should get 2 cats (1 or 2 Birman)?

    😂 I got lucky with my Birman. My SNL found a litter of kittens underneath her home baseboard. The white mittens gave away the breed. She’s still a baby, but she definitely loves the sound of her meows 😊

      @KittenBowl1 Před 4 měsíci

      Birman needs to be pedigreed or it’s not Birman (can be exactly traced back 200-300 years of how it’s bred). You cannot find one on street.

    "They will speak up in a soft and pleasant voice" My Birman: 'MrrrrNOOOOOOOOOOO!'
    Edit to add: We were of course looking to adopt, but in our country, the humane society is a bit strange about rehoming cats. You must be under 50, and a committee you never even meet yourself sits around and decides if you're a suitable home for this cat you've already visited several times and have gotten attached to. It's also not terribly cheap, you don't go this route really to save money. It's this huge barrier where people want pets, the pets need homes, but... nope.
    So, we decided if it's so impossible, then we'll go the route of knowing our future baby got the best start in life. It sucks for all those pets needing homes, but things are bit bass ackwards in this country.

    That little audio hiccup at parts like 2:00 can be fixed by adding an audio transition that is 0.01 seconds long. It’s the abrupt noise of you cutting out the mic. Little editing fix that can go a long way.

      Our outdoor going Birmans never care about rain, snow or ice (we don't have extreme winters, max -10). Our first cat when getting older started to rub his ass against the central heating for a few minutes before going out into cold. The young one we have now was very surprised to see snow for the first time, and then began walking through it as if the most normal thing in the world. Actually he likes rain, he goes out, gets wet and comes in to lick himself and repeats that several times until clean, very clever!

    Now I am not sure the vets are right that my rescue cat is a Himalayan...I think he could be Birman now.
    He's so cute and affectionate.
    If I get another I think I will get a Norwegian Forest cat.
    Added: my male is a "fine boi" but at least 16 lbs and only barely smaller than my sisters Maine Coon. Maybe he is just big?

    • @rohinisharmaxx
      @rohinisharmaxx Před rokem

      If it's roughly the size of a Maine coon then maybe you have a Ragdoll, they are more popular than Birmans and are sweet and affectionate as you described. Also they are larger than Birmans or Himmies but have nearly the same markings as Himmies and Birmans.

  • @KittenBowl1
    @KittenBowl1 Před 4 měsíci

    The cost of Birman depends on the pedigree of the cat. Normally pet quality (no perfect marking but healthy and no genetic problems) goes for $1000-1500, show cat quality $3000-5000 (they will not sell you show cat unless you have established yourself as a good owner and know the breeder well), and breeding show cat quality $8000-10,000+. Pet and show cat do not allow any breeding. Only breeding kind you can breed and no sane legit breeder will sell you a show cat or breeding show cat type unless they know you well.
