- A brief introduction to my Acorn Electron with ElkSD64 SD card adapter and some of my favourite games.
I forgot to say. The reason you can tell it's an older one, is that the ULA isn't in a socket.
**Correction (thanks to Barnabas) - the socketed ULAs were actually the earlier versions. They used to work their way loose causing instability. Mine is a later version with a soldered ULA. **
Delays in producing a reliable ULA was why the Electron failed to meet its hyped pre-Christmas release and said to be the reason it was largely a commercial failure. That being said, it was never a serious competitor to the C64 for gaming, but the huge amount of surplus stock ensured it was a budget solution right into the late eighties. Many games were ported to the Electron as developers couldn't ignore this part of the market. - Hry
That's actually a later edition Electron you have there. The earlier ones have a socketed ULA. I have read that the later ones have better RGB video quality but not actually owned one myself to verify this. Also your RAM is on a little sub-board at the front - in the earlier revisions it's soldered to the board.
Thanks for the info.
I've updated the description. I need to do my homework in future!
