This is a fun little project for those who remember the classic game written by Jordan Mechner and published by Borderbund. Originally on the Apple II, it was ported over to many systems including PC and Amiga. It saw many sequels too, some of my favourite were the Sands of Time series on the PS2. The game clearly needs a bit of polishing, but it's very playable. Download source: houssamchab.it...

    My sound blaster live just won’t work in DOS. My motherboard is an Intel board from 2007, 3GHz processor. I guess it’s just too fast. All is ok in XP but I wanted to use it in DOS. No luck.

    Nice looking case! I'd probably get a GeForce 4 MX 440 to put in there, but the CPU is fine enough for a 9x/DOS machine, I feel. The Live is probably my favorite PCI card for DOS support. There are some that sound better, but it's easy to use (especially when using the Audigy 2 driver like Phil's Computer Lab shows) and is great for Windows games as well.

      @pheidian707 Před 9 měsíci

      I had "fun" experiment with Live! and similar system that is here. I installed Geforce 2 MX 400 to it and suddenly my DOS didn't have enough free memory to run some games... It seems the VGA driver or something hogs up a lot of memory (and SB16 emulation as well of course) - so I had a fun 4 hours digging around and setting up the config.sys to gain free memory from correct banks :D Edit: I'm using real dos 6.22 and not the command prompt win98 dos - I prefer to actually boot into dos for older dos games.

    • @neppy-chan9297
      @neppy-chan9297 Před 9 měsíci

      @@pheidian707 I usually just reboot the system into DOS mode myself, when I feel like playing around with DOS, but 6.22 is pretty fun to play around with as well, especially on more period correct systems. 7.1 is handy though, even as a hacky standalone, FAT32 support is super nice.

    Nice video. Just bought a ps/2 55sx. Won't even get to post. No beeps and so lights on keyboard when pressing NUM lock and caps. Nothing on screen. I'm going to order another Dallas chip first. Swapping ram had no effect. If you have any other suggestions that would be great. I subbed.

    • @BenDoughty50
      @BenDoughty50 Před 2 lety

      If there's no power at all it won't be the Dallas chip. Try removing all cards, then powering up, just to make sure there's no fault on any of them. If not, then you could do with testing the power supply. It could also be a blown tantilum capacitor on the motherboard. I've seen Adrain's Digital Basement fixing these on old IBM machines on his channel. I think they tend to be physically blackened when they blow, so you might be able to spot it by just looking.

    • @RetroGadgetMan
      @RetroGadgetMan Před 2 lety

      @@BenDoughty50 sorry I should have mentioned that it does power on, hard drive spins then sometimes stops. Keyboard lights blink on initial power up.

    • @BenDoughty50
      @BenDoughty50 Před 2 lety

      That's a good start then. Like I say, try removing all the MCA cards, and disconnect the harddrive. It should post even with none of these connected. It could still be a capacitor, so still worth checking that.

    • @RetroGadgetMan
      @RetroGadgetMan Před 2 lety

      @@BenDoughty50 Yer I did all that. The through the whole caps visibly look fine, are the ones you mention surface mount. I have not looked at any surface mount components yet.

    • @BenDoughty50
      @BenDoughty50 Před 2 lety

      Sorry, my apologies. There aren't any tantalum capacitors on this mother board. There are a few on the MCA riser though. They are the yellow, through hole ones. They look like a blob. I'd recommend watching Adrian's Digital Basement or Necroware for diagnosing low level motherboard issues. Apart from swapping out a few capacitors, it's a bit beyond my skill.

    Literally picked one of these up in an amazing condition from the Dump. I am very sure it needs that coin cell upgrade, but, does it need it to be able to progress to the reference disc? What disc did you use? One from the internet or one that came with it? Thanks

    • @BenDoughty50
      @BenDoughty50 Před 2 lety

      If its the same model, then you'll need a reference disk to set up the hardware after the coin battery fix. I download the disk image from www.ardent-tool.com/disks/ then burned it onto a disk with a USB floppy drive on my modem pc.

    • @AdminFrank
      @AdminFrank Před 2 lety

      @@BenDoughty50 Ok, good to see we are using the same site. Just to make sure, until you did the coin cell fix, it wouldn’t even recognise the reference disc, right? Thanks for your reply

    • @BenDoughty50
      @BenDoughty50 Před 2 lety

      @@AdminFrank It should recognise the reference disk anyway. Its just that it won't be able to save the settings when powered off and will need the reference disk to configure on every boot. The disk drives for these things are notoriously temperamental. I'd recommend lubricating the motor, the head guide and worm screw as a first port of call, if it's not reading a disk.

    Loved X-wing, was a Christmas present to myself in 1995, our pc didn't have a sound card or CD drive at the time 😁 The trench run finale was super hard on normal! I remember thinking it looks similar but it's so much harder than Star wars Arcade on the Speccy. Never played Tie-Fighter, I did buy the B-wing expansion back then. I own Tie-Fighter on Steam now, I might get round to it someday.

    That's actually a later edition Electron you have there. The earlier ones have a socketed ULA. I have read that the later ones have better RGB video quality but not actually owned one myself to verify this. Also your RAM is on a little sub-board at the front - in the earlier revisions it's soldered to the board.
