Big Bus Stuck On The Beach At Lake Powell!

- We got a call for a bus that had been converted into a motorhome.
They were stuck in the sand at Lone Rock beach, Lake Powell.
Due to the size we decided to take the 12 ton wrecker.
20 minutes into the drive, we received another call for a jeep Cherokee that was stuck near big water Utah.
We knew we couldn’t take the 12 ton all the way to the Jeep, but we figured if we couldn’t reach him with the winch cable, and we may even be able to drive it out.
We didn't figure that it was two wheel drive! With a little bit of work and pushing we were able to get it moving.
We finally got to Lone Rock Beach and to the bus!

yes!
Agree with everything you said.
As a 21 year old girl in college i am a HUGE fan! He has a very diverse audience!
Best CZcams channel out there.
Agreed, something else that really helps is that there isn’t a constant repeat of the same things. Every video is something different
There is a special grin when we get away with doing something "stupid". I recognize it well.
I know that feeling too well
So true
Compare that to the grin when you don't get away with it. 😐
I wear that grin after every project, off-road adventure, and mountain biking in no man's land trip
Matt, I run a wrecker, 35ton and I love it I tow those busses lol
Poor kid didn’t even need a tow. But that was a pretty invaluable lesson about self recovery.
Worth noting that if you dont know what to do, asking someone more experienced/an expert is never a bad choice. Also, hopefully he upgrades to a 4wd Cherokee when he can ay.
Probably didn't have tire inflator.
@@chris103193 Or 3 friends to help push
As a 20 year old, these videos are invaluable😂
He paid for the tow and got a good lesson in the process, hopefully he learned from it.
Matt, it was so cool to see your incredible experience come into full play with that Cherokee.
The shocking and unexplainable thing about this video is that Jeep would produce a 2 wheel drive Cherokee. That's like a one armed boxer.
the sound of your voice when asking "Is this a 2wd." just priceless.
Almost irritated but still questioning is what I got lol
Epic
The sound of disbelief and “oh crap!”
What kind of crazy , would you have to be to take a 2wd there?
Michael McClure well if they know how to use the movement maker happener pedal and aired down their tires they could’ve drove it out and not paid Matt a dime. But people don’t have sense anymore
Really goes to show how much better you can get around on sand even with a 2wd when you air down the tires. Big difference
You can hear the joy in his voice after getting the wrecker out.
"When in doubt, throttle out!" 🤘😎 It looked like Colin McRae was behind the wheel of that Jeep!
The fact any Cherokee rolled off the assembly line without 4 wheel drive is a tragedy
It's a sin
What would the hair dressers of the 90s have bought without them?
@@RockmanDash A Miata, obviously.
The fact that jeep still makes a two wheel drive. Travesty

I love how Matt went into MadMatt Mode in that 2wd Cherokee
Teenager driving a two wheel drive on Utah's sandy back roads?
Matt: Let me show you how it's done, son.
It may have been costly. But the lesson's value was priceless!
haha. I got a Toyota Camry stuck in the New Jersey Pine Barrens as a teen. Luckily a group of hikers helped me. A less costly lesson.
@@Sessha12 Your experience cost less. But this person's experience was more valuable, assuming he learned how to extricate himself without relying on assistance from others.
@@gregparrott very true!
Too be honest they did have to do a lot of pushing. Something he didn't have the luxury of when he was by himself.
@Russ Hardy Other than it's clear you're expressing anger, I have no idea WHAT you've said.
What's your gripe, son?
9:53 That little girl that photobombed the video was awesome!
Loved the little girl peeking into the camera...precious!
It was funny 😂
I agree with you. Wonder if she will be a future Golden Globe or Oscar recipient

When he was cruising that Cherokee up the hill did anyone imagine Clarkson yelling "POWERRRRRRR!!!!" lol

What a beautiful bus 😍
Thats the real America right there, not the BS on the news. More power to you Brother.
In the dictionary under 'sending it'- is a picture of Matt flying up that hill in that little jeep!!!!
The look on Matt's face when he said "this is a two wheel drive "
"I don't take my wreckers offroad" - Matt 😁
There is just something special about those bus engines, I love the sound of them. Good job Matt and crew,
You answered one of my long unasked questions. Yes it does make a difference on a 2x4 to air down all 4 tires.
100%! learned that down here in sugar sand of Ocala national forest in Florida!
I didn't know you were a rally driver for Jeep.
Next thing he gets called from a rally race team.
I hear World Rally Cup is always looking for new drivers. Or, perhaps he could drive a support truck in the Dakar Rally.
Always keep speed
It always amazes those who've never lowered tyre pressure before just how much difference it can make in getting you out or not. Great demo of that here.
I’ve never even heard of a two wheel drive Cherokee, learn something everyday
Ever heard of a 2 wheeled drive Subaru? My Grandfather has one.
@@desertrat1357 The have the 2-wheel drive Ford Edge as well. The whole point of the Ford Edge was that they were supposed to be AWD.

Good one
👍🏻😂👍🏻
I thought it was Ed driving......
The two wheel drive Cherokee was epic, top work Matt.
I used to own a Hummer H2 adventure, and one of my favorite features was the built in air compressor. I could let air out of the tires and then pump them back up. It was a cool feature
I like this cat. He's got a sense of humor, and good at problem solving. Plus, he doesn't think he knows everything.
Your editing is getting wayyy better. Our weapon of choice is one smooth ride....cuts too bumpy part on journey
Right that had me laughing
That was a funny bit
Haha I was thinking the same thing. 😂🤣 had me cracking up.
The old saying, "80%driver 20% vehicle" is proven again.
@Brian Landers Of course but there are always a few eternal optimists. I can imagine how the young guy got down there. He probably kept thinking he would be able to turn around just a bit further down, but in fact it kept getting softer and he was too inexperienced to know to reduce his tyre pressure. As for the RV I guess they were just pushing the limits.
That 80/20 rule was more like 60/40 with me and my old VW Fox GL 1.8L 4-door sub-compact sedan. The VW Fox sold in the USA/Canada from about 1987 - 1993 was the VW Gol from South America, Brazil, IIRC. Mine was an '89. On stock wheels, all-season passenger car tires, and stock suspension, it had similar ground clearance to a Suzuki Vitara SUV (I parked it next to one in a parking lot and got down on the pavement to visually compare ground clearance).
Never ever had to be towed out of any situation. Ever. A family member parked it with the passenger side front wheel (FWD car, open diff) in mid air and the body resting on a concrete culvert at the side of the street (culvert ran under the street at 90°). I just put it in reverse and swung the steering full lock so the tire in mid air was binding against the side of the culvert and it came out on its own. I drove that thing on dirt, gravel, through mud and water, through hurricane induced flood water up to the plastic trim on the doors (as high as the tops of the wheels/tires), and over center medians with raised curbs in the road (traffic jam - parking lot style).
Usually didn't get stuck to begin with, and if it did, reverse gear while swinging the steering left and right was always, always the only thing ever needed to get it out.
Don't get me started on the tows I did with that car, including a 6-wheel refrigerated GMC truck (which could hold the Fox in the box, except the bumper. The box was just a foot or so shorter than the car).
Not too shabby for an 83 horsepower subcompact sedan with a 4-speed manual (with a very tall, overdrive 4th).
P.S.: Do NOT try what I did. Turn around, don't drown.
Growing up in the 70's nobody I knew had 4wd. The rule was it was only to get you stuck worse. I was really good at putting chains on. By the 80's it was more common but the rules still applied.
I think 60/40 is a little more accurate.
As soon as I saw that Cherokee I thought... Matt'll drive that out...
And what a beautiful bus/RV. I'm so glad people wish to preserve these machines and enjoy them. I sure do enjoy seeing them. Thank you.
Matt I'm seriously impressed with the driving in the 2wd Cherokee .
Have you ever thought about having a go in the world rally championship .
Great driving .
Great bodes too .

There's a huge hole in my heart from the '86 2 door 5 speed manual xj my big Brother sold several moons ago -.- except that puppy had 4x4! Lol
First off, great job Matt on recovering both rigs and not bogging yourself doing so, and Secondly, folks please re-watch this vid and pay attention to a few things; namely tire pressures off road. An open diff two wheel Cherokee, in powder sand, up-hill! Hard highway tires is like dragging a boat anchor behind you... If anything, one of the best accessories or tools to get for offroading would be a tire pump. Small electric compressor or hand pump, makes no diff... Just a good inflator for your ride, so you can drop your tire pressure as needed and not get stuck... Or ya know... keep on driving around on soft sand or mud with hards, and let Matt help you out later! :D xD
I thought that was lead footed Ed coming up the hill in that Cherokee for a second!
LOL He'll never live that down. I'm picturing Ed with a cigarette hanging out the side of his mouth, a bare and deeply tanned elbow resting on the open truck window, a cheeky grin on his face and 20 foot rooster tails coming off all four wheels.
I would like your comment but it's at 69 so legally speaking I cant lol

Heck, if a member even uttered 'stuck' in any manner they had to put a quarter in the general fund. Could say 'I just stuck it in my pocket' but it was 25 cents to the fund. Fun times. We had one chap say stuck (with no reference to four wheeling) four different ways just for fun so he could toss a dollar at the fund. :D
and never 'lost' just a might bewildered lol
There is something almost contradictory about a 2wd Jeep
ok for delivery mail I guess (in areas where it never snows)
I remember thinking my Ford Explorer 2WD was cool till I actually stuck it. Next vehicle was a Suzuki Vitara with TINY LITTLE 2.0L I4 and 4WD with 2 speed transfer case. Loved that little sucker.

I was in a little disbelief myself...
Love your vids Matt, you rock! Keep it up!
Well Matt, you did it again X 2. I've watched all of your videos and some 2 or 3 times and learned a thing or two. Yesterday I was off-roading and came across a full size 4x4 truck that was buried in soft sand. He had pulled the side x side off the trailer and unhooked the trailer from the truck. The first thing I said to the guy was: Never disconnect your trailer but there are a few exceptions. So, we hooked the trailer back up and I attached my kinetic rope to the trailer and yanked him out. It was a struggle, my Jeep would get boughed down but I got him out. Your videos are not only entertaining but educational. Thanks
Pulls out a 17 ton bus like it was a feather. Matt is unbelievable. 💪👍
Um maybe the "Rocks in your head" got the best of you lol, Glad you always figure it out thumbs -up!!!!
Risks are a necessary evil in life. You got out and that's what counts. Good job! Thanks for sharing.
customer had 2 yunkum ropes and diesel four wheel drives all around. must not have been a vary likeable guy
Those trucks were way too clean to be trustable operators
Well dont know about the likable part but he had ropes and there were plenty of big trucks around. Somebody could have helped..
Could have tried a double or triple tandem pull too. But most don't think of trying it though. But everyone else was probably there on vacation too. Who knows if anyone had the additional gear needed to make the pull work safely.
@@tcfdod2007 I think a lot of people are hesitant to help because of liability reasons. Also not many people have experience doing a recovery on a friggin bus.

I love the attitude of the bus owner we got it stuck no big deal these things happen lets just laugh about it. We all have stuff like this happen to us in life I wish more people would learn to laugh at themselves. Great recoveries as always.
It is a key attitude when RVing, imo.

You made your point about lowering air pressure, good job with that jeep
Absolutely drove the heck out of that cherokee and just when I thought the action was over, you drove the heck out of the wrecker! Damn fine job and that's what really makes this channel awesome!
Wow!That guy with the bus had his own Yankum ropes.....

Lone rock gets windy like that EVERY day in the afternoon. Been stuck there many times and pulled out folks too.
That jeep recovery was so cool, all you did was show up and teach him how its done, taught him about air pressure. So he got more then a recovery, he got a life lesson
This mans just drifted a wrecker😂
Need to turn a 4x4 wildland fire truck into a tow truck! That'd be cool!
Definitely cool, definitely expensive
And add flotation tires, have it run by a local person and keep it in Big Water near by. I've been going to Lake Powell for more years than than the age of
Lone Rock beach campers and I would never camp there. I've spent a lot of time there playing on the water with my kids and grandkids. I've seen someone stuck all the time.
They usually go far down the beach on damp Sand spend a few days while it dries out and people tear it up. Then they can't get out. The local tow companies won't go there! It is a thing where on holidays locals go to the boat ramps and get entertained watching inexperienced people trying to launch their boats. Can't back up, leaving the plugs out and filling up with water, ETC.
Thanks for sharing what you do and doing it with a smile. It's always been a pleasure watching because it's like a trip home for me.👍
Need like hill auto and towing for these. He takes his wrecker through some mud and does ocean beach recoveries
Brush trucks are pretty dope
It’s amazing how something as simple as tire pressure can make all
The difference 😎💯🇺🇸 u learn something new every day
I think i read or saw somewhere that they use this idea during WW2 with american jeeps while in the desert.
@@Joesjoex its the literal 1st most basic rule of going off road nothing special
Who else thought at first that some idiot drove a BUS into that canyon ??? LMAO !!
Exactly because if regular cars can get stuck out on beach sand how much more can a hulking big bus. Yea I was an idiot for driving my 1992 Ford Crown Victoria onto the North Myrtle Beach access (for pedestrians and beach patrol only vehicles).
@@marvinjgerald6007 they don't use crown vics for patrol vehicles? lol
that bus was a real looker. Id love to have something like that. sucks that they are pretty limited as far as where you can go, clearly the beach is one of those no go zones and that would be a deal breaker for me no matter how awesome it is!
This man can drive! I wouldnt Even consider trying that hill in the 2wd at my skill level. Impressive!
Matt you're a brave man playing with the tilt on an old saginaw column ...
Sounds like he did the 4 cylinder fan clutch upgrade on that Cherokee too
Jason from Maryland here.
I deal in restorations for All years of XJ, by referral only, as my work is pristine. One of my holy Grails is my all original, 86 Cherokee Pioneer, 2.5, 2WD, highly optioned special order from California. It's rust free, and will burn ANY compact in the turns. Rides on skinny white walls in 205 size. Jeep campaigned a Cherokee for the city family that wanted the ruggedness, but didn't see themselves as off-roaders. It's a great, light little Jeep and get asked about it ALL the time.
Ask that kid if it's for sale, I'll fly out tomorrow.
Cheers!
This man can drive anything out of trouble. Much resect with that jeep. Soon as i saw it on screen I'm going "that's a 2 wheel drive".
Amazing when we learn from our own mistakes and still come out on top without calling for more assistance. Great job and you had that pit in your stomach feeling. And you did it without HOT ROD Ed!! Kudos...
The first recovery was a complete show of your experience. The bus was impressive, but we all know they had no business being on the beach with that vehicle. They deserve every penny you charged them. Lol 🤦🏼♂️🤣🤣
k henne yes it is.
Lake Powell is a unique place...lots of fun mistakes.
I think that’s the most disparaging thing I’ve ever heard on this channel. “What a miserable place to camp”. And so very true. And on top of everything he noted you also have sand in every corner and crack within 10mins of arrival. I always find a nice green place to camp and drive to the sand for the day to wheel.
There's a tow hook behind the Eagle emblem on the front bumper, just remove the 4 screws. (From owner of 4 Eagles).
I enjoyed the two wheel drive Cherokee drive out. To me that was the most fun I've seen here for a while. A different challenge. Handled well :)
I thought u where going to snatch him with the winch cable for a second, I was like... Oh boy hope that cable doesnt snap and take out the whole crowd
Matt, you show a lot of confidence without any arrogance. That comes from knowing, without a doubt, that you know what you are doing. Job well done!
Great recovery and thumbs up for this big bus, this bus is a beautiful way to travel. Thanks again!!!
Take note young man, you just got a free lesson that only experience can teach you.
Who said it was free?
As handicapped has that 2wd Cherokee was it still managed to get up that hill. I've seen high dollar 4x4s that would've struggled to be driven out like that Jeep was.
Most of those "Ugg, 2wd jeep.. 🤮" guys spend thousands on crap that makes their 4x4 slightly better than factory and then stupidly laugh at everyone else.
All the gear and no idea springs to mind when folks struggle with these new 4x4s offroad.
Never doubted Matt getting it done anyway he can ,magic.......👍
This is just another day in the life of a Super Hero :)
Sand Rule #1: Just because you can get in, doesn't mean you can get out!
I know. I had old Yugo 45 might heard of him... 45 Horse power 4 gear manual. I got on the sand beach and move just a little down the hill to get out of the road. It was some good leaf mass on the top of the sand. So I did not see how much sand is there. The moment I stooped and fell how the tiny car treys drooped down to the send I know that moment I'm in trouble... Literally I needed 10 minutes to get 5 meter in reverse up the sand. I used wooden sticks to move sand under the the car to free it of hanging on sand. And carpets under the treys several times. When ever I put carpet under the wheels it moved half meter or one and half foot before it threw the carpets underneath the tires ... And my girlfriend push it... It was hilarious. Not in that moment but later... :D
! That's what SHE said !
Big-J hello, so true, like an AIRLINE LANDED AT PURDUE UNIV, instead of at the municipal airport, they BOTH HAD SAME RUNWAY HEADINGS, so just bussed the pax , over, but the airline had to truck out ALL SEATS & stuff, to lighten it up, also removed some fuel, waited for a WINDY DAY TO FLY IT OUT, IT WAS A B727, demotion ensued for the crew. Cheers 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
We say that about mud too. Of course you always have 4 wheel drive. That'll either get you out... Or a LOT more stuck!
Always back up hill....
Hi Matt, huge fan of your channel. The weight of the vehicle needs to be supported by the tyres, and the tires are in turn supported by the air pressure inside them. the force holding the truck up equals the contact area of the tyre multiplied by the air pressure in the tyre. It all has to equal out, so lower air pressure in the tyre needs a larger contact patch. So lowering the pressure gives a greater contact area and also decreases the pressure (i.e. the amount of force per unit area) on the sand. Love your dogs too!!
Thank you for this video! I got stuck on that trail its so awesome to see that again.
Pulls/jobs like this make me appreciate the capabilities of the military 5tons. Onboard tire pressure control, all wheel drive, and adaptable to multiple configurations. Been in them rock climbing the Mojave and just rolling down the highway. More comfy and capable than a hmmv.
You need speed in a 2wd off-roader, that’s why you need so much more suspension. But it is a lot of fun when things go right.
the jeep 2x4 demonstrates the exact same off road capabilities my grand marquis.
My family and 19 other families we met thru out the years have camped at lone rock for 20 years for family vacations. We had a blast. Before lone rock we camped in warm creek got caught in a flash flood and had to go to Wahweep Marina to get a tow truck. The tow truck got stuck in the mud and had to call for another one that got stuck too. We had our ford Ltd that was stuck in the mud. It was great times. But you never say wind at Lake Powell cause it starts blowing. Going up in July. Just us kids many many years later to sprinkle my mom and aunts ashes. My aunt passed the day before mother's day. She has lived up in Page and then a small place called Church Wells.
LOVE Lake Powell!!
Well, that worked out well, thanks for sharing, stay safe.
Another great lesson! Appreciate the explanation of why to lower the pressure on the front tires of a RWD. The importance of "walking the route" was also a great tip. Thanks.
those converted busses make much better RVs than regular RVs, busses were built to withstand a lot more abuse than a regular rv
Yup, and atleast here a converted bus is a lot cheaper than a regular RV
But you need a licence to drive it, regular RV's can mostly be driven with regular car licence... (but even with the cost of upgrading your drivers licence its still the cheaper option...
Also, that Flying Eagle looks sick! Wish my old Mercedes looked that good!

My ARB onboard air compressor is my favorite modification on my truck. Made a device to add or let air out 2 tires at a time with a built in pressure gauge. Having the correct pressure and tires is the best way to avoid getting stuck, if you don’t have 4x4 stay on the road.
