I keep seeing these forgotten sunken Lake Powell and Lake Mead boats in pictures on the news and stuff like that, and I kept thinking "I'm sure the hulls are still fixable. Someone should drag these boats home and resurrect them." You guys are actually doing it. Totally awesome.

I have been following the story of both Meade and Powell, and surprised what good condition these boats are in, or seem to be. Fiberglass?
I haven't been this excited for a rescue in a loooong time! Living in Vegas and being a Lake Mead go-er for 20 years, this really grabs my interest! There's tons of old jet boats ready for rescue here! Can't wait to see the ole gal run again!

Thanks for cleaning up the lake. I can't wait to hear that ski boat's engine come alive again. My family had a similar boat when I was young and we had endless happy hours down at Lake Havasu.
Hunter deserves a badge of courage! Not sure what the dirt removal did, the rooster tail of dirt Paul was shooting in 2 wheel drive refilled the boat. You guys are awsome. So cool that the original owners have been found, cant wait to hear that story. That tape deck has some AC/DC in it. Highway to hell.

It is going to be interesting to follow this recovery and restoration and having located the last owners of the craft. That had to be a button popping moment for Paul and crew. Thanks for sharing.
I'm 83+ and know life is full of fights. I think you are doing the right thing by picking up the gauntlet on this one. I love it. When I saw that pump on the backside, I thought it looked a lot like the pump and engine on my SportMaster. It had a Jacuzzi pump with an Olds 455. The boat had sunk from negligence and I got it for almost nothing. I replaced the pump bearings and reshimmed. Replace the crank and bearings because of corrosion. After that, it was a VERY GOOD ride. We did a lot of skiing and a lot of fishing with that boat. I hope you have as much fun rebuilding yours as I did mine.

Yep.Came home 3 hours ago,and just stepped out to maybe a 1/2" so far here south of Flint,MI. It's the wind that bothers me.
The Great Lakes region is beautiful too. Both in summer and winter. We just sometimes forget how beautiful it is when we've seen it everyday of our lives. I live in Minnesota and I am also amazed at their scenery, but we have amazing things too. I could do with a mountain or two around me.

I have an idea on how the boat went down. I used to live in AZ, I had a Hallett Jet Boat with a Berkeley pump, and my friends all had jet boats too. One day, we were out on the lake, being idiots (you could drink and boat back then in the 90's) and my buddy in his jet boat tried to do a "James Bond turn-around" basically a 360, which he had done many times before. However, this time, the boat augered in, ejected him and his buddy, went down stern-first, bobbed in the water for a minute or 2 because there was an air pocket in the closed bow. We immediately devised a recovery plan, and at that moment the bow cap split open from the hull, made a farting noise as the air escaped and it immediately sank.
Ah, the good ol days!
Only the premium built boats had the deck glassed to the hull which would have prevented the situation you describe.
Why is this my favorite show by far? Don't really watch TV, so this is it. Just love these guys.
Would love to hear the backstory on the boat from the owners. Always good stories on the lake.
It was probably an insurance job. If your boat sinks, you would never just leave it. Because of the oil and fuel in the engine, The state department of natural resources would never let you just leave it. It's a pollution hazard and a navigation hazard.
The likely scenario is, it was taken out and intentionally sunk. It was reported stolen and the insurance was collected on it.
@@andrewmcgibbon9785 it was a super nice boat to still be super nice 30 years underwater. the engine sounded great, someone loved this boat. Its too bad they didnt treat it better.
@@andrewmcgibbon9785 30 years ago nobody cared about a boat sinking in a lake., Different era. If it goes down in 100feet of water, good luck with recovery back then. Not going to happen. Seen plenty of lower transom boats get swamped.
@@andrewmcgibbon9785 If it had been blown away from mooring during a monsoon and sank, nobody would have known where to begin searching the bottom of the entirety of Lake Powell. It could be as simple as being overloaded by a hundred pounds and swamped the transom. If there was no insurance, the cost of recovery from 100' below, even with a known location, would have been outrageous. Either way it would be a write-off.
What do you see that makes you automatically assume foul play by the legal owner?

Michelle was right to be worried- Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a severe, sometimes fatal, respiratory disease in humans caused by infection with hantaviruses. Anyone who comes into contact with rodents that carry hantaviruses is at risk of HPS.

I saw this boat on a fishing channel Here on U- tube they were showing how the sunking boats were exposed. I'm glad somebody came and rescued that boat I thought it was a great find. You guys are the perfect ones for the job.

After being under water for so long, it might be smart to open up the fiberglass stringers, inspect and close and reinforce them - a bunch knowing the fab rats.
precisely this, also they should probably invest in some 2 part dye crack penetrant to find out where all the cracks are
The stringers are made of wood and partially covered in fiberglass in all that I've seen like this. These appear to be wood as well.
@@jjohnson2553 agreed, every one we opened up has been built pretty much the same. Also need to check the balsa or whatever core material they used for the decks and floor.
Dad is a boat carpenter for a living so have done stuff like this a few times.
Good idea in most of the fiberglass boats I've rebuilt the stringers are wood under a couple layers of roving chopped mat roving chopped mat then a couple layers of glass cloth.
Wood/balsa cores do rot more often than not. I would have that hull inspected by a professional before spending any money on it.
My uncle made a pontoon boat, and filled the aluminum pontoons with expanding foam, and he used to run it up on sans bars, and people would tell him that it would sink after that, not knowing he had done that. He also never put the plugs in it, and everyone "knew" it would sink.
I love watching those old jets go by, but man scariest ride of my life!Waves can definitely rock those under. That’s a 85MPH monster when she’s running. Cheers

Any video with live rats roaming around the set are priceless! Well done recovery. I would not put too much value and confidence into the integrity of that "boat" fiber glass to be on a lake at high speed. Make sure you wear life jackets when you put it back on the water it may end up at the bottom of a lake againin no-time.
I can’t wait to see the transformation on this boat. Such a cool boat to lose like that, I bet the owners at the time were so sad.

I remember Lake Powell being low like that in the 1960's when it was still filling up. Looking down from the dam the water was way down there. Let's hope that Mother Nature will fill it back up again. I hope to see the boat when I'm down there for New Years.

My brother had a boat similar to this one, had it tied up at a dock and a storm blew in overnight. When he came out the next morning he saw life jackets and seat cushions floating around, he thought someone was not going to be happy about loosing stuff out of their boats. Got to where his boat was tied up only to find just the front tip of his boat sticking up out of the water.
Well he was right. Someone wasn't happy. He just didn't know yet that that someone was him lol.

I’ve seen many times jet boats that are driven by people who don’t know how jet boats should be driven you just don’t stop real quick, the back will fill up with water and sink that model I’ve seen on Shasta lake many times go under great jet boat you will enjoy it very much have fun
That was my thought. I think people are trying too hard to come up with creative scenarios. Stopping fast in a low-slung boat and getting swamped by the wake is way too easy and I imagine it's pretty common.

I used to love exploring pick a part, but the sad part was finding personal things left behind in vehicles they loved once. I hope no one in this family was hurt when they lost their boat! You would think the parks department would be happy to have people go salvage all of those treasures!

Real cool recovery of that boat. So crazy its in that good of shape after being underwater for so Iong. It preserved it nice. It reminds me of suck my wake boat from The Great Outdoors. Hope to hear the whole back story. Can't wait to see more. The tape is The Scorpions 🦂
What an adventure, this was definitely a family adventure! Blowout tire, rodents, speedboat rescue in a dry lakebed! The drive home with no break down was a plus. What more could you ask for? Hopefully not to much work on the truck. Great editing Michelle as always. Til next time take care...
