Fellas, yesterday was hard but I think you make the right decision. Streamlining and doubling down on your strengths will grow the network way more in my opinion. I think though, a lot of fans would appreciate if we were listened to more or made to feel like we have been listened to more. I've seen many people ask for separate channels for shows, and even suggest that they would sign up for an SDPN patreon or channel membership.
It makes me weary when a lot of genuine goodwilled feedback you get from fans is taken as toxic. We all want to see SDPN thrive

Well you can even ask any other youtuber; it just makes more sense to have multiple channels for different content rather than loading it all up onto one channel. The hockey guy has a 2nd channel to talk about non hockey stuff because one time he did a video that wasn't hockey and noticed people unsubsribed from him. Even if it's a few people here or there, think about how long SDPN has been trying to get to 100k subscribers.

Steve, Adam, and Jesse took a chance. They bet on themselves and they bet on the content creators that they platformed. Sometimes it doesn’t work out, that doesn’t make the three of them bad people or even bad business people, it just didn’t work, that happens in life sometimes. It sucks right now, but hopefully everyone involved pulls experience out of this that allows them to grow and be better prepared for their next opportunity.

Sure, but also they've had countless people telling them that spamming hundreds of low effort low quality game over shows on the main channel is leading to people unsubscribing and turning people away from their content, causing damage to the entire channel and chances in the algorithm, and now here we are. Bad people, no, but bad business people, yeah kinda. We'll see if they learned anything from it, maybe they'll research the platform they're on for 5 seconds next time and have some more success

    • @eprovidentjr

@@Jubedy you ever work in this space? It’s not as easy as it looks from behind a keyboard or phone screen. Sports media, content creation, YT it’s a difficult as hell space to crack. It’s not as easy as “researching for 5 seconds” or listening to what people in the comments say. They put their money and their livelihoods on the line for their dream. I’m not gonna look down on that because an idea they had didn’t work. Tons of ideas don’t work.

    • @Jubedy
      @Jubedy Před 4 měsíci +17

@@eprovidentjr Sports media, no i haven't. Doesn't make a lick of difference, this is youtube, and i do know that spamming out garbage on the same page you put out your alright content severely hurts your outreach. Everyone who wants to run a business on here should know this by now, especially if they've been at it for years, and if they don't then I'm sorry but they're bad at their jobs.
I am not going to look down on them for trying to make game over work, I am going to say they fucked it pretty hard before it could ever get off the ground the way they tried to go about it. It is actually as easy as researching for 5 seconds that wasting your limited amount of given space on peoples feeds with subpar content is going to cause them to not click on it, or click on it and then quickly click off. That doesn't just hurt the one video, that hurts the entire channel.
CZcams is not an easy nut to crack, but its a hell of a lot easier if you don't shoot both your arms off before trying it. also, not listening to your audience doesn't make you smarter than them, it makes you quickly irrelevant. You shouldn't take every random hateful comment to heart, but you should absolutely be paying attention when people are constantly saying hey, i don't like my feed being flooded with these videos (or in many cases, announcements for a mediocre stream after a game that's a day away still), I think I'm going to have to unsubscribe.

First of all, sorry to hear about the layoffs on Thursday, and a big thank you to everyone on this channel for all the hard work they put into it, especially those who are no longer with SDPN. I hope their skills shine elsewhere and they find what they're looking for.
In terms of my favourite team, the Senators, I'm at a loss for words as to how things have fallen off so quickly. This is the second straight month where they have gone on a 5-game road trip and gotten ZERO OUT OF A POSSIBLE 10 POINTS. At one point, I at least could say they are just under 500 hockey and they can turn things around with a big winning streak. They need to win 9 in a row just to get back to 500 hockey. There are only a few teams in the East with below-500 records. Buffalo, with that win, is 12 points ahead of Ottawa. And they are 7th in the Atlantic Division or something like that.
The one thing that gives me hope is the recent progress of the Jets, Canucks, and Flyers. All of them were going through rough patches last year. All of them had some bad mojo throughout the season that seemed, at times, inescapable. This year, the Jets and Canucks are competing for the best record in the whole damn league, while the Flyers are contending for a Wild Card spot in a bananas Metro Division. If those teams can turn it around in less than a year, maybe Ottawa can be that team next season.
But the Sens aren't going to turn it around this season. The learning curve is way too steep right now. They won't get out of the hole they've dug themselves before April. And this is the time where management needs to really evaluate the talent that is there.
What the young players will learn over the next few months is going to determine their future with the Ottawa Senators. And if they don't learn it fast enough, I fear that they will be on the wrong side of some gutsy decisions by management.
I just hope that management makes the right decisions and brings in the right people. With the coaching staff being at the top of the list. Martin is probably the guy to finish this season, but I'm very hesitant on keeping him full-time as the head coach. I think the role he was originally brought in for is the formula that works best for the long-term. If they can somehow poach Brind'Amour from Carolina, that is the best thing they can do. He preaches fitness. He takes no excuses. He preaches solid two-way play. He gets results. And they way that Carolina plays (aggressive forecheck and backcheck) is the way that Ottawa needs to play, IMO, to take that next step and be a consistent playoff threat.
I love this team. I love the guys that represent this team. But I am accepting the fact that a big change will be made if this stretch of losing continues for much longer - whether it happens during the Trade Deadline or most likely the off-season. A change that goes beyond veteran NHLers on expiring contracts.
Stutzle, Tkachuk, and Sanderson aren't going anywhere. I keep Giroux for as long as I can because he produces and he has the all-around game that Ottawa lacks elsewhere. They have 4 more years of Korpisalo, so I doubt they give up on him this early.
Beyond those guys, I don't think anyone is safe. I guess it all depends on what they have, what they don't have, what they need, and what it will take to get what they need in order to perform better.

Totally appreciate your words about the layoffs and Game Over. I think it's worth noting, while I respect that it's very sad and tough to lose any aspect of work but especially these days, I don't think many of these creators were working full-time at the company. SDPN went through monumental growth very quickly, as did many similar channels and networks in a similar time period. The resources it requires to bring one show, let alone 5, 10, 15, to air every day, and pay the creators and the contract employees behind the scenes to make it all happen, takes a real toll.
Nothing but respect for this pod and this group. My thoughts really are with the people looking for new avenues to put out content they love. I hope that they continue the journey on their own.

A theme that will hopefully continue for years to come. In the short time he was an Ottawa Senator, he gave his team a chance to win in basically every game he played. I admire the aspirations for grander things and betting on yourselves, but trying to build up so quickly is a tough thing to do. And throwing everything under one umbrella instead of building up a few smaller channels and getting better metrics that way was a big swing and miss. “When we started expanding, and we started expanding rapidly, we did so under an economic structure that made sense at the time. That has since changed, and it changed very rapidly, and I’m sure everybody’s aware of the cuts not only in media but also across all industries right now.”
Listen, I respect the guys a lot, and think what they did was admirable, but to blame the layoffs on the economics of the country, just seems like a lame excuse.
More accurately, they rapidly expanded what they offered, and in doing so, had to pay the creators. They likely understood that it may not catch on right away, but the idea is the financial commitment you make short term, would eventually be made up in the long term, even if it meant an initial loss.
Without knowing their finances, my guess is Game Over wasn’t profitable last season, but they expected to turn a corner this season, and it never seemed to grow. They couldn’t risk spending more for growth that isn’t guaranteed, and thus had to cut their losses now. I don’t think anyone would fault them if they explained that this was the main reason for the layoffs (which I think is likely).
You can blame the layoffs on being too ambitious, on misguided optimism, or even a lack of foresight. But to blame it on the “economic situation” just feels like corporate jargon. It’s a little disappointing to see from 3 guys who advocate away from regular traditional corporations.
I don’t even really disagree with the decision to cut Game Over, just think it could have been handled a bit better.

They might have a had a development plan with the gambling revenue and when they lost it they lost they funds to sustain that development. AKA the economic structure.

Say it was, while unfortunate, necessary for the long-term health of the company, which it was. Gonna be brutally honest boys, you started pumping out absolute crap content with those countless low effort game over shows and it drowned out the content that was worth watching. I'm positive it's tanked your standing in the CZcams algorithm.
Frankly, you should consider culling more than just Game Over and if there are any non-hockey productions you insist on retaining, you need to shift those to other channels focused on that sport/topic. Lack of engagement on random F1 or NFL videos here on the main channel are not doing any favours for your viewership metrics and will be impacting how often your content is recommended to viewers. You arent TSN or Sportsnet, this isn't an advertising arm for your massive news network, this is it, this is how you butter your bread. You need to be able to play the CZcams game.
You need to do a better job maintaining quality across your channel, and that means vetting the quality of the hosts you feature (sorry to say a few of the folks hosting game over were too amateur and were not ready for the opportunity you gave them), as well as seriously considering the floor and ceiling of the foundation of each show before green lighting it. Game Over was an easy, low floor-low ceiling premise from the get-go and would've had to really capture lightning in a bottle to be a successful, quality production.
Maintaining quality also means managing sustainable growth. You should be developing one show at a time, cultivating it until it can stand on its own. Pooping out episode after episode of 6-7 brand new shows all at once spreads you too thin to ensure the quality of each new product, and doesn't provide the space and time for viewers to naturally grow comfortable and attached to the new content.
Love the pod, love a lot of the content here, and I wish for a successful 2024 for you guys ❤

well u forgot about their mission though.. esp. for game over.. they wanted to help people get into the media industry.. give people that chance under that game over platform.. some good some bad.. the problem with "game over" is that people have other avenues to watch people that have legitmate "media credentials" - ie guys that are paid to follow the team (from TV/radio/print media. etc..) post their own podcast of a post game rundown.. i myself listen to "rink wide" .. also the other problem is.. maybe someone literally finished watching the game.. are they really expecting someone to sit around another hour to listen to a recap?.. i mean how many hours has someone wasted on just pure entertainment.. instead of maybe going to bed.. it made sense back then when more people drove to the game and was listening to a talk show post game while heading home..
On a side note.. I don't know how familiar people are with macro economics and the current state of the north american economy.. All companies are tightening spending at this point.. 2024 and esp. 2025 (post US election).. companies could be hurting real bad.. inflation is out of control.. commercial lending is like super difficult also.. sports relevant companies like Nike already have begun layoffs.. where do companies cut first? advertisement dollars... this in affect hurts small companies that require ad dollars like SDPN..

I have read some good comments here regarding the layoffs, hopefully they can use the good comments as valuable feedback.
As someone else mentioned, it seems a little ironic that they buried this announcement in the end of a segment on a Friday, considering their own criticism of the league doing similar things.
    1. Steve's reaction during this announcement was disappointing. Him taking that moment to pump his own tires and bash his fanbase came across as self centred and childish. I am sure this wasn't his intent and he cares deeply about this. He seemed emotional and underprepared to make a professional statement. He is the CEO of SDPN and this was not a good look. I know Adam is the host, but I think Steve should have fallen on the sword to head up this announcement. Hopefully he apologies for this and does better.
    2. I know the internet is full of idiots, and creators have a lot to sort through, but it sounds like there was a lot of existing feedback regarding separating the channels that should not have been ignored. Sometimes the internet can give you some good feedback that is worth listening to. Your fans deserve to be listened to (sometimes!)
3, One other minor bit of feedback from myself is that next time you guys change the set visuals to hire someone professional to help you plan/colour coordinate the look, and listen to their advice. Even if you don't have the funds to hire someone, I am sure you have a friend who is good at interior design or even graphic design who has a good eye for what looks good. Your audio/technical production is fantastic, but the visuals don't match the podcast quality. Outsourcing this very important element should be a priority to take your show to the next level imo.
Thanks for all the hours of content you guys have produced. I listen to the SDP more than any other show.

Regarding the layoffs, the decision behind them was solid and clearly the right one if you know anything about the downtrend in media right now. However, the way that SDPN handled it was extremely disappointing. There was no official announcement ANYWHERE, and the only reason people knew was because those that were let go gave statements on other platforms. The only mention from SDPN was in this episode (90% from Adam), hidden at the very end of it. To me the lack of execution on that in particular has more more concerned for the future of this company than any downtrend in media.
The audio is great, but the video, lighting, set, etc could use a lot of work. If you're no longer paying any of the staff that were let go, I hope you start investing that money into increasing your production quality.
If you do hire new staff in the future, from a business perspective it would be wise to hire people with actual industry experience. People don't start a business to make friends. Find people in the industry and bring them in. They don't need to be a big fish, but they can't be a small fish.
