  • Episode#16 Custom Virtual Pinball Cabinet Build
    In this video I will be teaching you how to install your playfield monitor so you can swing it up and out the way so you can work on it and if you need even more room, you can pull the entire monitor out as well. This can be a tricky part of the build so hopefully this can help a bunch of people out there. Sooo much pinball cabinet goodness for any inspiring cabinet builders out there.
    I have also created timestamps so you can jump to the part/info you need.
    00:23 Figuring out the location/angle of the playfield monitor
    01:49 The playfield monitor holder design
    03:25 Checking the monitor for issues or things that need access
    04:17 Correct orientation of the monitor in the cabinet
    04:40 Checking the board/tv flatness and measuring the overall height
    05:20 Laying out the position of monitor/holder in cabinet
    07:27 Checking if buttons or plunger will hit monitor
    08:50 Making cutouts for the playfield holder to not hit buttons/plunger
    10:32 Making the stop blocks and pivot blocks
    12:30 Installing front stop blocks
    13:50 Positioning the back of the playfield monitor
    14:12 Figuring out the pivot point for the monitor
    15:34 Making the pivot bar

    22:50 Installing the rear pivot blocks
    24:28 Making/installing tapered guide blocks to remove play in board
    26:54 How to transfer the VESA hole locations to the board
    29:32 Installing the monitor
    31:33 Designing/making the stay to hold up the playfield monitor
    35:13 The final result!

      Thank you very much David, I really appreciate your kind words. I try very hard to make the best videos I can for my viewers but it is insanely hard to get noticed in a sea of CZcams videos out there. If there is a way to get my channel noticed by a ton of people that would be amazing. Until then, I'll just keep trying to make some seriously good content and hopefully it'll happen someday. Thanks for the watch and trying to motivate viewers to share out my channel on their social media! Cheers!

    I've installed several monitors in cabinets I've built over the years. Every time it is the hardest part of the build. I absolutely love the way you did yours. I use that paper trick on other things I don't know why I never thought of that for mounting the tv. Thanks for the video I got a lot from it.

    This series has come about at exactly the right time, been comtemplating and researching to make a VPin machine for over a decade after deciding against trying to design and build a real one for almost 15 years.
    I am really hanging for the lockbar episode as that is one part that has stumped me for a bit. Designing the cabinet and everything else is fine but that last finishing part if you are going to buy a real one, the cabinet has to be built to that dimension and while I have a welder i'm not all that decent on it.
    Also love the fact you are using all hand tools and "general joe" accessible parts for the build and so far, looking great. Has me excited to give this a crack with my kids

Super happy I could make a 15 year old dream of making a vpin a reality for ya Bruh! Your kids are gonna love it!

About your plans for a bigger Playfield Monitor: i tested different setups including a 49" Sony UHD TV = way to big, looks weird! My actual Setup: 28" Backbox, 20" DMD, 7" Topper ("toything" , only for testing)and a Gigabyte Aorus 43" 144hz (got this cheap as a second choice because feets were missing *lol*) and running 4k with a rtx2080, most of the time 250 fps and more, man this is the thing!!! Yeah there's a lot of different methods to hold that monitor up but tiny shocks would work too.

  • @locked01
    @locked01 Před 7 měsíci +1

    It is an interesting approach indeed. But I've done it differently.
    In my case, I opted for the monitor to be parallel to the inclination of the cab. Why?
    Because the point of view on the 3D playfield can be adjusted via software and, doing so, it does give me view on that vertical part of the playfield under the DMD.
    But this is the beauty of project like these, you can customise them to your needs, without having to follow any rules, just suggestions and guidelines by passionate people like you.

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před rokem +1

      In my case, I used a 10 year old tv that has pretty big bezels that couldn't be removed without damaging the structure of the tv. I am planning on putting my addressible led strips down the sides and an led matrix on the back. I also plan on painting the bezels black to help hide them. We'll see how that looks pretty soon. Love the detail contained in your videos. Just a question though. What’s the reason for not installing the playfield flush with the top. I would suspect that it would make you believe there was more of a slope. It almost looks flat. Curious to hear the reasoning behind it. Thanks for the vid and great work.

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před 4 měsíci +1

      So I had room for my matrix at the far end. It looks flat but it isn't flat at all. With it off it looks like a blank pinball table at the correct angle if it was real. Thanks for the watch!

    Awesome video as usual....love all the details.......only thing is i find the monitor won't have much of an angle...seems to be lying fairly flat.....maybe it will look different once your playing it...maybe it's the angle of the camera...anyways again thanks for the very informative detailed video.....

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před rokem

      Thanks! It's probably mostly the filming angle, it looks different when you're playing it. However, it would look brighter/better if the angle was higher but then you break the illusion of the dropped playfield. I may adjust the rear up a bit with the legs to help with this. Thanks for the watch!

  • @sam27753
    @sam27753 Před rokem +1

    Also nice to see that you install the playfield near the lockbar above the flipperbuttons. Seen so many builds with much useless empty space between lockbar and Playfield. As a former real pinball collector this looks ugly and not symetric to me, your decision is absolut right! ;-)

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před rokem

      Thanks Sam! Yeah the huge gap at the front on some builds looks horrible and it's the real reason why I went away from the stock widebody dimensions and looked for a bigger sized monitor that had the length to make this happen. Turns out an old 46" tv works for this! In the future I'll upgrade to a newer thinner 48" 4k monitor with 120 hz. Thanks for the watch and the praise!

    These are fantastic video tutorials. Possibly the best on YT for this. I have been obsessively researching these for about a month. Love your work however it's putting me off constructing one myself, haha.
    I'll maybe try a basic build on an existing unused hifi cabinet first, it's at about the correct height I reckon & really heavy.
    I have a question about your Playfield Table Angle... in the video where you're deciding on the PFT angle & also height/position of rear screens (using textbooks) the PlayField Table looks to be around 15 - 20 degrees from horizontal. In this video it looks more like the angle is about 5 deg. is that correct & if so, what is the reason for this?
    I would be planning on using a 32" 1080 LED or IPS screen, would this make a difference to said angle as it's not as high a resolution as your 4K?

      Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed my teaching style. If you deem me worthy, I'd really appreciate it if you could share out my channel on your social media so I can help more people.
      You should just build one but go slow and take your time...enjoy the process.
      If you look at my vpin cabinet plans ( video description), just take the angle of the angled side and figure out what my monitor angle is. I have my monitor 1" lower at the front and 4" lower at the back. There is also the angle of the legs which pitches the back upwards a bit too. I would highly suggest taking your monitor and mocking up the angle you plan on using do it's exactly how you want it to look like.... it's your preference.
      I'm actually not using 4k, I have a 10 year old 1080p tv in there. I plan on upgrading later once the budget build is completed.
      Good luck on your build. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

      Thanks Bruh! Glad you like the series! SW? Ya know that's a good question, usually pc parts don't like vibrations. I definitely would not mount your pc right next to an exciter. Mine is close so I decided to build a pull out shelf on slides and I'm going to probably mount it on some anti vibration mat. Thanks for the watch!

    Great content! Im at the stage of leveling out the playfield screen with spacers (one reason is because the casing is angled and also because the back of the screen will hit the blocks holding the dowel when i fold it up. The vesa is 100x100mm using m4 screws so in my opinon a bit weak for being a 16kg screen, you think the screws can handle the pressure of using 15mm spacers?

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks! It should be ok but you'll need to make sure you have longer m4 bolts to ensure full strength in the threads or else it will strip out. If you're worried, you could always add some support blocks around the perimeter to take some weight. Good luck!

    Very helpful video. Thank you. Forgive my ignorance but if ur playfield tv dimensions are 42.75" long x 24.75" and the inner cabinet dimension is 25" but your playfield tv mount is 30" long x 30.25" wide in accordance to your sketchup plans. It seems the plywood tv mount is wider than the cabinet also, the tv mount specs are much shorter than the tv, However, your video shows the plywood tv mount is longer than the tv itself. Please bare with me as I try to put all the pieces together you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thus, I am trying to figure out the size of the plywood tv mount for my tv that is 24.3" high and 42.20" wide, which is close to the tv you used. I appreciate what you do for the community.

    I think it is a mistake to not keep the monitor flush to the top of the cab all the way to the back of the cab. I know the current thinking is to angle it down to create a more realistic representation of the back of the cab but I think modern gpus change that. They are now strong enough to do ray tracing lighting, so a good display with HDR will be able to render the back of the playfield much better in 3d then trying to artificially create it by angling down the display. This will result in recreation tables look ultra realistic reflecting the actual back portion of their playfields.

      @wayofthewrench  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I see what you're saying, especially with the new pov for vpx 10.8. there are other reasons to drop the monitor though like leaving space for a led matrix and making it look like a real pinball table. I really hate the screen right up to the glass, to me it looks like a video game. I'm pretty happy with how mine turned out but I'll have to see what it looks like in 10.8 pov. Thanks for the watch!

    Seriously loving the series an am starting a build myself, if I missed something why not have the playfield monitor by the speaker end higher up to look like a regular pinball with the playfield closer to the player lower down or is this just preference?
    But if it wasnt for this series i would be not building this as quickly keep up the good work

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před rokem

      Thanks Robert! Glad you're liking the series and getting something out of it. The reason the monitor is down at the back is so it looks more like a real pinball cabinet. If the monitor is right up to the top, it looks like a tv screen. This is my opinion though as some people do make it the other way. It also depends on your viewing angle on your monitor. • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před rokem

      Thanks Eric! I feel pretty good about the monitor placement. I mean it could look at little bit brighter/better with the back a couple inches higher but then the illusion of the dropped playfield is gone. I can't go lower at the front unless it was 5 inches lower (to clear plunger/buttons) which would look dumb. If anything I might raise the back legs of the cabinet and drop the front legs a bit to tilt it a bit forward. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy and there is just enough room to add my led matrix to the back. I'm really happy with where the display meets the edge of the lockdown bar too ( video still to come). Thanks for the watch Eric!

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před rokem +1

      Exact angle....dunno. If you look at my plans to figure out that angle then add the playfield angle of touching the cabinet on the front on top and down 4 inches at the back....whatever that is. Keep in mind, if you dont use a led matrix, you can alter it to whatever you want.

    I'm looking to limit the overall weight and improve modularity and transportability of my cab design. So i want a lighter playfield monitor mount and easy removal. i'm thinking of somehow adapting a wall mount bracket? Also i want to make the backbox easily removable and reattach (and easy wiring). How would you do all this?

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před rokem

      Honestly, the plywood monitor mount I made was pretty light and if you drilled more holes, you could make it even lighter. As for the back box, if you didn't want the standard hinges, you could just have the stock back box bolts and latch, that's pretty easy to remove within a couple minutes. The wiring for the top is the 2 hdmi cables to monitors and their electrical plug ins and the back box speaker 3.5 mm wire. Not any real way to make those quicker or easier. These cabinets are stinking heavy even with your lightening efforts so you may wanna rethink the size if portability is your concern. Thanks for the watch!
