When I was in high school, I told this older guy on the football team who was in my journalism class to watch Sleepaway Camp, which is a fun campy 80’s movie with a wild twist ending.
When he saw me in class the next day he started talking to me about it and how terrible it was. I was deeply confused until I realized he actually rented Sleepover instead of Sleepaway Camp. He said “Yeah I hated it but I kept watching because you said there was a dope twist at the end.” Every time I see anything with this movie I just think about this jock renting it from Blockbuster on my recommendation and watching it all the way through. It brings me so much joy.

I never got to have a sleepover. My mom said it was because the house was filthy, but I was Cinderella in that home. I cooked and cleaned and looked after my brothers. Always thought it was because she didn't want to take responsibility. Yes and no. Turned out it was because she was on meth. Glad I broke the cycle. I can't wait to help my daughter have the sleepovers of her dreams. Hope you get over COVID quickly!

same, my mother was a hoarder so i could never have others over. i wouldnt hang out with others out of fear that they would want to eventually come over my place. it can be very ostracizing and definitely made my social anxiety worse.
My mom didn't let me go to sleepovers as a kid. I didn't like her for it at the time, but after getting older I am happy she didn't because I have heard of stories of people preying on kids during the sleepover. Whether it be the older cousin, another one of the kids, or the host of the sleep overs father.
@@savannahhalm I respect that so much. Honestly, the reason I WANT to be the sleepover mom is because of mine and my daughter's own struggles. I want to be a place of fun and more importantly, love, hope, and safety for my daughter and her friends.
Trigger warning, but this is our story: My brother tried to get my daughter to do stuff with him when she stayed the night with my family. Thankfully, she is super close to me and told me about it before it led to her body getting hurt on the outside. I won't say physically because I feel all trauma effects you physically. I felt like the trauma I went through should have prepared me more, but I wasn't prepared for someone I considered to be one of my closest friends and almost more like a blend of son and brother to me (raised my brothers during my mother's abuse and my dad's obsession with his abuser which was until I moved out). I will never not be bleeding out of my heart for my daughter and what she's gone through, and I will always hate myself for not knowing the monster he was, despite how well he hid it.
As for my story, I was abused by a boyfriend of an adult cousin. My parents were too busy partying to care. It's literally one of my oldest memories and went on from when I was walking to when I was going into preschool. I blocked out a lot of it, but not enough...
I try not to feel stupid for being so fooled by love and trust for my brother...I wish I could have protected my daughter better. I trust no one like that now though, and I really want to give her the social life she wants without the risks. It's my hope that I can also grant my daughter's friends enough peace that should they need help, they feel they can come to me.
I feel like I might not have said everything as properly as I could have. Maybe I made a mistake in this whole thing somewhere or explained a situation or myself wrong, but it's hard to discuss trauma without my brain scattering. I just hope it was clear that I love my daughter, and I want to be her place of peace and joy and a shield and sword for her until she forges her own.
Sleepover is one of the rare movie examples where all the teen characters are played by actual teens. With the exception of the guy who played Steve. Who was 22 for some reason.

Thank you for pointing out all the fat shaming that was rampant during this period in history. It was intense and completely accepted.
I remember when I first watched Bring It On: All or Nothing (which Jamie also did a review on) and I was SO excited to see that one cheerleader (Brianne?) who looked like I did; taller, bigger legs, strong arms that looked a little soft, because I had also started cheerleading that same year and looked nothing like the other girls' bodies. And then when the other girls started commenting about her weight, it crushed me because I had also experienced girls slipping diet ads in my locker just a few years prior (even though I was the 3rd fastest girl on the cross country team).
Don't get me wrong, I loved that I got to grow up in the 00s with the fashion and music, but I also hate that I internalized a lot of the body shaming and unrealistic expectations from magazines and movies.
Oh yeah, the way they did Yancy 😳 I loved her character though!
I agree, however "body" shaming would be a better word for the Millennials. I was a twig in high school, genetics, but I always got told "you should eat more" or "eat a Big Mac" or "stop throwing up" 🤷🏻♀️ I was normal healthy teenage girl qho felt so ashamed and embarrassed for being "too skinny". No matter what way we look like, it was never enough.

However I do remember seeing this in theaters the summer it was released- I turned 9 that summer. I doubt my mom would have taken me to a PG 13 movie at that age. She was pretty strict. I have a very specific memory of going to Branson as a teenager with my mom, dad, and little brother. They had a theater there at the time that offered a late night movie ticket for $5 with a bag of popcorn. There was nothing to see but Sleepover, so we went and had a blast. We were the only ones in the theater and genuinely enjoyed this goofy movie. Years later I caught my dad rewatching when he saw it was playing on TV, lol!

Reminds me of when I was in 6th or 7th grade. We had a movie theater that was walking distance to us, so my friends and I would go there when we had sleepovers. We ran out of movies to see that weren't rated R except for kids movies, so we went and saw The Last Mimsy at a 9 o'clock showing. We were the only ones there except a woman who was by herself. We were so obnoxious and loud the whole time because we were so bored. Poor lady

Yeah, I remember reading in GL, Girls Life magazine, an interview with Alexa Vega about how the director would have her kiss what's his face every time they were both on set to become comfortable kissing when it was time to film it. That feels extra creepy especially since she was 15 or 16.

My kid brother and his friend froze one of my bras once when I was probably 14, so it was basically 100% padding, and he got in SO MUCH TROUBLE, bc my mom had paid like $50 for it. 🤣 I have no idea what those super padded Victoria’s Secret bras cost now, but I’m guessing it’s more than that. I remember when this came out my sister called this film a bubble gum movie, as in, it wasn’t very good. I was still in elementary school at the time and told her, “Bitch, you’re bubble gum!”

As one of the few gentlemen in the audience, it is very refreshing to see some of the gender roles reversed. I will say that, while the glasses scene could have been a cool example, any benefit of this was heavily undercut for me personally by how uncomfortable it was to watch the whole scene play out. If they would have just had the woman who asked him to dance remove his glasses, it would have been more effective because I wouldn't have been thinking, "Wow, I hate watching his high school students touch his face." Especially since that wasn't the only creepy thing about the movie, it really bothers me to watch. However, the non-creepy scenes of gender role reversal are really cool.
My only other thoughts about this movie are that when I was in middle school, I wanted to be as cool as Alexa Vega in that skateboard-past-the-car scene so bad, and I wanted that fully holographic crown because it was probably one of the shiniest things I'd ever seen.
…not to be that person, but the crown is actually holographic! common mistake, but I gotta let the people know lol
