GT90: Everything To Know About Ford's Secret Supercar
Vložit

- The Ford GT90 has to be maybe our favorite concept car EVER.
...And not just because it was an unlockable in Rush 2
A quad turbocharged V12 good for a top speed of over 250 miles an hour
High intensity fiber optic headlights
The first ever infrared blind spot monitoring system
All hand crafted by the company that at the time was building… well - cars like the Aerostar and the Taurus.
It was one of the most insane moonshot machines ever developed
But It was too radical.. Too daring… not to mention insanely expensive to build!
It was SO different, they needed parts from a certain Jaguar
to make it work.
This is the car that WOULD have changed Ford's trajectory… FOREVER!
And even though it seemed basically ready for production, they killed it.
This.. is the Ford.. GT90

Who else back in the days grinded the 40 laps of Seattle Circuit to earn this beast in GT2?
Boot up that IBM and play Need For Speed!!!!😎😎
@@Wolf_ShiKari_Scoria just posted my own comment on that! Good ol 97 man!
😂lol i do
This was also available on the original Xbox "Sega GT" loved that car
I did that’s for sure😂
I remember loving this car in Need For Speed 2.
Me too! And it had the best sound of all.
Me to! Slayed

Even by today's standard, the design of this car is still futuristic
12 cylinders, 4 turbos, carbon sybframe, sounds familiar...
Looks timeles. Remember seeing this car in a book back in 2009. Still looks amazing.
All it needs is an interior made of Carbon Fiber instead of "McDonalds Playhouse Blue."
@@CaptPatrick01 no. Carbon looks like shit. Blue looks amazing and timeless
@@babyletzyyou can drive it in the game Need for Speed 2.
It was Playstation 1, the game was NFS 2 AND IT WAS AWESOME 👌
Need for speed: Hot Persuit 3 was the first game i ever played. So nostalgic 😭😭
I remember when PlayStation first came out and it came out with the game Ridge Racer and then the next game I bought was Need for Speed and I've been addicted to Need for Speed ever since I just don't have a system right now
Yes NFS2 on PC, I remember it fondly!
how far EA and NFS have fallen now they put mario kart handling on everthing oh you have to drift to make that turn you can just make it like in every other racing game
PS1 (grey square) grand Turismo 2
I remember when I was racing in Seattle in Gran Turismo 2 and I got that car after finishing the 60 lap race and I'm like what the heck is that??? I thought it was a random car designed by Polyphony themselves but then I saw the Ford badge I'm like how can I not know about this car? The overall design is crazy 😮
I did the same thing. Then I started finding out about concepts.
A lot of companies lifted elements of other people’s concepts and ran with them.
I wish people would learn how to use the word "like".
@@davidpeters6536Calm down, Boomer.
You can go see it in person at the hajek Motorsports museum. Maybe you will go on one of the handful of days a year they start it to make sure it stays actually running.
@@jarruddixonFord literally owned jag at the time they weren't stealing a damn thing
While i certainly did not expect this, it is much appreciated to see the GT90 getting some love again. Keep up the good work man.
This car even looks futuristic in 2023
Reminds me of the Bugatti
yeah this was the concept model dream car so many of us had when we were younger
This was my favorite Ford ever made even though it was just a concept I just love it
I got the opportunity to see this car in person at the Cars and CoVerica event in Dallas back in October (the picture at 7:13 was from this event) and they even started it and revved it for the audience -despite doing it on the cold V12.- It was such a unreal sight and attracted every person there, leaving present day hypercars including a Chiron and Huayra Roadster completely unattended.
As a 2000s kid I loved this car ever since I was little but thought I'd never see it in person, I felt like a kid again lol
stupid question, did it appear to be a "large" car or a smaller one?
It looked like it could do well over 250 mph. This car looked like it`s from future. And 28 years later it still does look like it is from future.
That's right. Ford GT90 is doing 253 mph.
@@darkhero9567 Actually this is Ford`s claim. This car was never tested.
@@nfs2seturkish988 actually it was tested.
@@carlo94_ Show me link bro
I remember no matter how I tuned the handling on this thing in Gt2 I couldn’t get it to go around the test track without bouncing itself into a spin-out.
It was so hard to turn in NF2. Lol
love the 90, really wish it was released in masses rather than being a one off exclusive. it really does look out of this world.
Imagine in real life yet
Reminds me my teenage years when I used to play a video game with this car.
Facts dude. This car made me stop when I first saw it. I thought it was a space ship. It was in a book called concept cars. Definitely get chills seeing it now.
GT90 is the greatest misstep a car company has ever made, this would have supplanted the car industry 10+ years, and is still timeless as a concept.
There wasn’t really an expected market for a super expensive Ford. It would have been super limited production and probably one of the most expensive cars at the time. Often if people are gonna spend that much they want a better name than Ford regardless of how high the performance is. Especially since it wasn’t also tied to a racing series. The modern GT’s made more sense and were more reasonable for the time.
In a way like the luxury car VW tried for a bit. Was a super nice car and made sense. But, not many people were willing to drop 100K on a VW.
It was mid tbh
I agree.
@@BARelement you are mid
Bugatti actually doesn't make vw group much if any profit year in year out due to manufacturing and development costs. They consider it brand advertising. That's why they recently sold 49 percent ownership of it. This cat would not have been any different.
The most beautiful CONCEPT car ever made !!!
Nazca C2 or Cadillac Cien.
I think Ford should bring this car back as a tribute to the 90s I mean they brought the GT back I think this car is just as Epic it may not have got the chances to win the races but it's beautiful I think with today's abilities of building monocoque chassis I think they should make a new one
It's scheduled for 2035. But you didn't hear it from me.
@@randaddy2000i sure hope so. I dont even care if its ev lol. Its about the bodylines for me
I had this as a model car as a kid in the 90s. I haven’t thought about that car for 25 years… until this video. Wow. What an awesome car that was and could have been.
Was my first model car 1:8 or 1:16 can’t remember was the big scale…been soooo long
This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and timeless cars of all time. I grew up in the Need For Speed 2 SE era, and I got to drive this car in the game. If this car was made by any other company it would not have the magic appeal. The fact it was a Ford with the Ford logo adds to its magic.
Had the second top speed after maclaren f1 in the game.. Loved the car, loved the game back then..
It is without doubt one of the cars of all time.
Timeless of all times? You think you're funny?
@@stephenhurd1489 anything else ignorant to say? no, i didnt think i was being funny. if you could comprehend grammar, you would know there is nothing grammatically wrong with what i said. there can be a list of so called Timeless design cars. they would be made over decades. Therefore, timeless cars can have a relevant timeline.
car is ugly as hell
The GT90 is what everbody thought 90s cars would look like.
Not only did they do well with this story they actually showed a real one
It was a blast driving this car in Ford Racing 2001!
Does anyone else remember unlocking this car in the second Need for Speed on the PS1, 3DO and PC? And the Ford Indigo? What ever happened to that one? And to this day one of my dream cars including the XJ220, the first poster car I hung on a wall

feel, look, quality most concept cars have.I think that they could make it today and make a profit with little updates .
I fondly remember driving this beast in Need for speed 2, those were good times.
Ford should try releasing this into today's world and I'm mainly a chevy fan! It would definitely sell itself!
I remember playing with it on the game ford racing 3, such good child hood memories (I still play the game some times, 100% recommended if u can get the hands on a copy of the game)

Well done video, i like it. seeing that priceless Jag drifting like that alone was enough to make this video worth watching, but you seem to do proper research. Thx for uploading and have fun!
I remember I first saw this Car on Need For Speed II back in mid 2000's. I was a fortunate kid, and then around 2017 I bought a Maisto miniature of it. It sits besides my computer ever since then. Every time I see this kind of videos with many references to car games I notice how more and more of the car guys on CZcams are grownups from the videogame kids era like myself, and how important that was for our car culture. Nice Video!
@ideal media Thanks for the video. Great seeing the love for GT90. Small correction: Jim Hope was a transportation designer, not an engineer; at Ford and most other OEMs they were separate roles that collaborated to bring design visions into reality.
Definitely a touch of Bugatti stance to it. It's thick! with haunches! Wheels a bit sucky looking even for that era, but would have loved to see it in action! That kind of body looks suited to a hybrid for sure. Active wing extending at speed or braking. Even though it has a bit of 'the jetson's' about it with that canopy. Could be insane retro! Lot of fun!
Man, kudos to you. Perfect background music for the legendary GT90. Majestic!
That Thing Is SICK!
I first saw this car in Need For Speed 2 Special Edition and it was my favorite car ever since. I have at least a dozen scale models and toys to match it. I wanted one so bad. What a machine!
That was one of my winnings in GT2.
As I recall, it was some pretty fun driving
Thanks for the video.
My recollection was that the engine was actually two of Ford’s relatively new Duratec V6’s joined together, and that the resultant V12 (sans turbos) went to live it’s life in Aston Martins.
Gorgeous car, that I never knew they made. Thanks bro you made a great video!!
89-92 Ford Probe GT 2.2l turbo if you turn up the Boost 16 lb did fuel pump, intake, and exhaust it was good 200 horsepower and would beat on the Mustang's and Camaro's of the same time. I know this for a fact because I had one. I also remember seeing something where that the Ford Probe GT turbo was supposed to replace Mustang and they underrated the power of the probe gt turbo so it didn't have more horsepower than the Mustang of that year.
My buddy had one back years ago GT V6 NON TURBO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION and that car would fly and definitely could hang a corner for a late 90s car !
Here's the down to the core backstory on the "mazstang"
Around 1986 GM was working on GM 80 Project which they were working on
Making the camaro/firebird front wheel drive.they couldn't stuff a V8 in there and costs got out of control and other things went wrong.
(Thank god!!!!)
Motorweek magazine April 13 1987: "had GM 80 reached completion, the "mazstang" would have been going head to head with a fwd camaro by 1990. The quickest way ford
Saw to match GM's move was to call mazda witch was already in the process of redesigning the 626/MX-6.
There was a huge write in campaign by mustang owners/enthusiasts protesting against a front drive restyled M-X6 mazda, and the "mazstang" was badged a probe.
8:54--no they did not use the jaguar chassis! John Phillips did a front cover story on the development of the GT90 in car and driver January 1995.
Witch I have. The suspension and brakes were used off the XJ220 and that was it. The chassis was made by prototype builder mascoTech. Quote from Fred goodnow c&d magazine January 1995: " the car that came closest to what we wanted was the XJ220. So we started there. But we were
Installing this huge V12. Whereas the jag only had to worry about that short V6. And we decided from the outset that our car have tiny overhangs, whereas the jag's are really immense. So the result was that we used the XJ220's suspension pieces--mildly modified, the uprights, the AP braking system--but discarded there tub completely"....."Anyone who thinks this is a modified XJ220 is wrong". And they sliced 2 cylinders off each engine block and welded that
Together not 4 cylinders off of 1 engine block.
The interior looks fantastic. Did not expect that!
It’s bittersweet this car. Like you said, it came from a time when normal automotive companies dared to dream big. Push the boundaries and take a chance. Even if it was for pride and pride alone.
This car stands for so much more than its looks and speed.
Thanks for the Rush 2 shoutout, that's all I can think of when I see a GT90!
I remember this car from Need for Speed II. Ford needs to make this car with modern technology. The amount of HP they could get out of an engine that size with todays tech would be insane. They could call it the GT 220 for the 2020s and as a tribute to the XJ 220.
It was one of the most incredible concept designs in automotive history and to hell with the execs who canned it
Now u see where the modern day cars like the Bugatti and Lamborghini drew inspiration from
Objectively wrong information but you're free to have such intrusive thoughts.
One on my fav for sure. Man, i was 19 when this was revealed and no concept I had seen before was more radical … and cool
I remember that car when it came out on maybe a Ps2 game. That was the raddest vehicle at the time
After all this time and a Hot Wheels ‘98 first edition, this car is aging well! At first I thought it was weird but now it blends in with today’s creations!!
I have the ford gt90 from 2000
I remember seeing this at the Auburn Indiana auction back in the early 2000's. This car is way smaller in person than you might think and just as awesome.
THAT is one wicked-looking ride!!
I had a 93 probe with the 2.0 and a five speed. My buddy had one with the 4 cylinder turbo and enother friend had a probe GT which had a 6 cylinder. I loved those cars. Mine was kind of weak but it handled so amazing.

I was playing this car in Ford Racing 3 on an old laptop back in the days
I had so much fun playing it
in 2001 i brought a model of this i still have it. i love this concept, it should've went to production.
I bought the model too and built it! So sik
Imagine being the engineer at Ford that got to develop this. Gearhead heaven 😊
Watched from Jamaica and I still have my Magazine with the Ford GT90 on the front cover.
I saw this car in person alongside the Ford Indigo at the Vancouver International Auto Show. I'll never forget that day, you could walk right up to them
This and the Furai were the two cars over which I've been the most disappointed.
Great car pick for making a video, I almost forgot this concept exists.
As others have said- the design holds up surprisingly well! I remember really liking this as a teenager. Though, I do feel like the next big design language will be kind of retro-80s cyberpunk. So, this will fit right in. :)
I remember unlocking this car in Rush 2 and it was always my favorite, I never knew it was real until now lol. Its so cool I wish it would have been a real car, it kind of looks like a crazy Japanese futuristic car
that Rush 2 stunt level was 🔥
Very interesting video,I learnt a lot , thanks
i've owned 2 gen 1 sho's and those things are great. can't change my mind.
Wish they made the Indygo
The GT90, Audi Avus Quattro, and Lamborghini Cala were some of my fave concept cars growing up in the 90s
As a child I played Need for Speed in the 90s and me and my brother's love this car on the game.. There was also a car called for el Nino It seems like a modern day bugatti with the engine in the front
Bro Ive never seen this... The interior was amazing... and the exterior is just as good. Wish this came out new
just imagine the modern iteration of this monster.
This and the McLaren F1 were my favorites in Need for Speed 2
that car was amazing and it still is
Gotta love those wheels.
It's a beauty!
This is AWESOME! Now do the Ford Indigo concept next!
* I've loved the GT90 too. I actually have a 1/18th scale model of in in my collection along with the Car+Driver write up on it. I saw it at the Auto Show at Cobo Hall that year. The engine was out of a generator ! 👊😎👍
I forgot this car even (kind of) existed. Memory unlocked racing this thing in NFS!
It is my favorite concept car and hit the top mark giving new life to the whole concept car practice every automaker in the world. After the GT90 the Ford Indigo.
I suddenly have flash backs from this creation!:)
Loved playing NFS2 and driving this car.
This was also one of my favorite hot wheels i think they ever made
Man how I wish this was a production car ❤
I thought it was fabulous when it was revealed but I never knew until today what was underneath, a Jaaag 220!
Great story.
I wish I could hear it rev in person
I remember drooling over this car when it came out. Didn't the tire tread even have GT90 in it? I am vaguely remembering that.
From Gt2 to the model car even to seeing at the Javits Center for the car shows I’ve waited to see this in the streets. This and the Mustang Mach3
My dream car when i was younger ❤
I WAS SO PISSED when they did not produce it. I feel the same way with the Cadillac Cien.
I didnt realize they only made one, i remember seeing it at the auburn car auction many years ago
i wouldnt know of this car if not for nfs 2. Cant believe there is only one car in the whole world. Would love to see it.

I have this car in a model from the 90’s too bad they never made it a real super car

This is my favorite car.
I wanted one of these soooo bad. It was like a space shuttle back in the day.
I remember seeing this car in motor trend magazine. It was cool.
Why does this concept car look timeless still!! 😳
When is the kit car version coming out, that is what I want to know??????? I love it to bits.
I drove this car in Need for Speed II :) It was one of the most unique cars I think I’ve ever seen.
Extremely curious that some of the other cars mentioned here, including the Jaguar XJ220 and McLaren F1 were also included in NFS II :)
I have magazines from HS with the GT90 in them... I still want one!
