- RYAN WIEBER VS. MICHAEL "DORKMAN" SCOTT
What began as a friendly rivalry between two effects artists explodes off TheForce.Net's FanFilms Forum and into the real world in a lightsaber battle royale.
Originally created for the forum's lightsaber choreography competition, this fight to the death will decide once and for all who is truly most skilled with a saber.
There can be only one.
(I did not make this short film, stop asking me how I made the special effects. Its a mix of rotoscoping, photoshop and After Effects.)

FAQs (from ryanvsdorkman.com)
How did you do those lightsaber effects?
We used Adobe After Effects to rotoscope the prop blades and add glows to them. Essentially the same way ILM does it. After Effects was also used for a variety of other visual effects you see (or don't see) in RvD.
How long did it take you to make this, and when did it come out?
We choreographed and filmed over the course of three weekends, and spent about 4 months on the effects in our spare time, finishing March 1st, 2003.
Did you guys have any martial arts or sword training when you made this?
Neither of us had any formal training of any kind at the time of making RvD. Just watched a lot of movies.
Where was this shot, and what is that thing in the background?
RvD was filmed at Carco Electronics, who built flight simulators for the aerospace industry. The machine in the background is a satellite tracking positioner, the specifications of which were top secret. After the machine was finished being built, it was shipped off to an "undisclosed location".
Where did you get the lightsaber props you guys are fighting with?
The saber props were actually built for this. They were made in several parts using a lathe, mill, and other metalworking tools. Aluminum tubing (like you can find at your local hardware store) were used for the blades.
What kind of camera did you film with?
Canon GL-1 camcorder. - Zábava
CZcams was so much simpler back then, just cat videos and Star Wars
Metro Booming No shit!!! These were the days man.
Metro Booming exactly
Some mario parodys and 5 stars here and there.. Good ol days
meow
Halo and Machinima
15 years later and this is still the best lightsaber duel on CZcams
16yr now. Still amazing.
We need a part 3
I'm so happy I'm not the only one searching this video
I think so too.

Look at what Corridor crew did!
Ryan is in the VFX team credits for The Force Awakens! :D
Good for him
+pattheman777
Brandon Flyte (from Ryan vs. Brandon) did work on TFA too.
Yup, I saw his name on there too!
im guessing the ending of the battle was a hint to the force unleashed 2 bad ending.
nope this was made in 2003
Man, I remember watching this in 2003 and being amazed at how well-choreographed it was, especially considering that they had no formal training. This still puts the majority of lightsaber battles from most Star Wars fan-films to shame.
Krizen Medina except it was made it 2006
RolanticZ Live Nope. I specifically remember watching it in the summer of 2003 on TheForce.net, and later on eBaumsworld; you're thinking it was made in 2006 because that's when it was featured on the front page of CZcams and became viral.
From the Wikipedia entry:
"Ryan vs. Dorkman, often abbreviated by fans as RvD, is a series of Star Wars fan films, created by Ryan Wieber and Michael "Dorkman" Scott, and first released to the internet on March 1, 2003."
Krizen Medina 0
Krizen Medina In the beginning the fight was actually like sword fighting used to be, I believe. Although from what I remember the lightsaber fighting in Episode 7 wasn't bad

Revenge of the Sith: “WRITE THAT DOWN WRITE THAT DOWN!”
For something that's fan made, and 11 years old, this is pretty good quality.
In your time it would have just been 8 years old...
Savatron wait a minute..
Now is 14 years Old like WTF where has Time Go?
Savatron because ryan vs dorkman was made in 2003
15yrs now
I love some of the subtle details in this. For example, the entire battle Dorkman is fighting with one hand, almost nonchalantly. But after Ryan punches him and knocks his glasses off, he goes all out and fights with both hands, as if he's finally taking the battle seriously.
The One-handed thing is an actual form used by many strategist Jedis and Siths. Count Dooku is the most famed one who uses that form.
He switches from form II to form V
I'm pretty sure this video started the whole 'Star Wars fan Film' idea, and when it came out, everyone was like "How did these two kids make a better fight than all the original movies...?" 11 years later and it still holds up.
Not quite. Back in the day, friend of mine gave me a whole stack of DVDs of TERRIBLE Star Wars fan films (and the Christmas Special). In return, I showed him this.
I think he got the better end of the deal.
It didn’t start it, but it probably popularized it.
Knew the TLJ ending reminded me of something....
Holy shit...
@@thejanusproject32 and they actually worked in TFA, so that's probaly inspired by this video or at least by him
*Casualy puts lightsaber in pocket*
It's 2016, and this is still one of the best fan made light saber duels on CZcams.
+TheRubbaRazza Agreed.
in my opinion this sets a new bar to duels that I have not see in any of the actual star wars films. all of the fan film duels are just so bad ass the movies can't compete. I believe if you made a fan film you should be hired on as a consultant for the duels just to make them super awesome. but that's just me
Today's Star Wars fan films are just toddlers hitting each other with plastic to royalty-free music and poorly edited sound effects.
TheRubbaRazza Agreed
2018
such fond memories watching these lightsaber duel videos as a child and now here I am 22 years old and I still come back to watch this masterpiece
Damn, I cant believe its been 9 years since this came out.
I've watched this vid for years
+Versace Bentley I like the Kendrick cover as your pic
LeagueOfGaming1000 Thanks man
+Versace Bentley it's been way longer than that, this was posted to youtube in 2006 but it's been around on the internet since I Believe either 2002 or 2003
+Ciaran Smith 2003
Still better choreography than almost all the movie lightsaber duels
Edit: ground fighting is so underrated, would love to see more of that out of hollywood
The ground fight was creative.
I FOUND IT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS! I AM HOME.
Are you serious? All I did was search "real lightsaber fight" and it was the very second video. BOOM. I found it in 2 seconds.
TheSlickkEffect I typed lightsaber duel and bam
@@TheSlickkEffect123 CZcams did a good deed for a great man
And in case you forgot, here's a reminder.
@@gangweed3244 Thank you so much! It really goes to show how much creativity the early days of CZcams birthed. People just made what they wanted and uploaded it, without the fear of being trolled or being called 'cringe'. Hell, sometimes SNS posts can destroy your job and social life. This was mind-blowing back then, but these days anybody can use free video editing software or even AI to achieve a similar effect. It's always so good walking down memory lane.
Thank you!
3:53 The last Jedi: write that down Patrick!
10 years old and its still fucking awesome

11 years later and this Video still stands the test of time.
Volting Master came out before I was born lol
This fight is already better choreographed than the duels in the sequels
The OT you mean. Yeah it hurts to admit uh?
I can see Makashi used by Dorkman and Shien/Djem So used by Ryan. It's like Anakin vs Dooku all over again.
i thought i was the only that spotted it
I feel so nerdy that I got that too :)
The Makashi style is easy to spot, but I wasn't so sure if the other was Shien.
***** I'd say that it's a mix. Ryan occasionally goes into a very aggressive and brutish two handed stance that resembles V. But he often spins and dances about like IV.
***** His striking Soresu's opening stance doesn't help figuring out his style. Also, thanks, if it hadn't been for your videos I wouldn't have gotten into the technical side of Star Wars. Nice to see you commenting on different Star Wars videos, rare to see a popular CZcamsr do that.
DimetriKhan The reverse grip is most often associated with Shien, but Dorkman uses that one too in this video. Anyway, I'd say that Ryan's is a mixture of forms IV and V.
this was 8 fucking years ago?! HOLLY SHIT I GOT OLD, time truly flies
I can relate. o-o
my thoughts exactly
whaaaat the fuuuuuuck
lol that freaked me out too when I saw the 2006!
That was just when this particular video was posted. If you read the comments they say they finished it in March 2003. 11 fucking years ago. You are old.
That moment when a 13 year old CZcams video has better fight choreography and camera work than either The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi...
K N stg
"better fight choreography and camera work than all of the fights in the Star Wars movies." Fixed it for you.
Totally agree with ya that fan fic ep7 8 and 9
This fight was way more enjoyable than those movies. Omg it’s so annoying to see these dudes from 16 years ago make better lightsaber duels than a billion dollar company
Well someone give this guy his “better than sequel trilogy comment” trophy so he can leave.
14 years later and still one of the best lightsaber duels ever.
They need to hire these guys for Episode 7 if they haven't already. Using minimal effects, these gentlemen choreographed a more dramatic and action filled sequence than the Anakin v Obiwan part 1 in Episode 3. Props bros, as a huge Star Wars fan I can't believe I just saw this, at the behest of Mark Hamill albeit!
yes
I actually like that fight the best, its not sped up, it genuinely feels like they are trying to kill each other, its two force users (super-humans) in their prime dueling to the height of their ability and using all their skills and ability to see the future to try and kill each other. The rage in Anakin and the pain in Obiwan is almost palpable, especially at the end when Obiwan lets his control and mask slip and shows his pain at the loss of his brother, whom he had to just kill (or so he thought as he left a mortally wounded Anakin to die) while reliving the moment he lost his own master. When he says 'Its over Anakin, I have the high ground' that's a callback to the fight in the Phantom Menace, because he should have died, and he knew that. Logically he should have been cut in half by Maul, and he would have relived that moment a thousand times, whenever he had time to think a part of him would see that moment and all the different ways it should have played out and all the different ways he should have died, and no one would be able to pull that move on him because he would have thought of every way he should have died, and therefore every way he should have countered it. It is the best of both worlds for a jedi fight, immensely emotional and beautifully choreographed! This is definitely better than that hot mess in The Last Jedi though.
They were hired for the force awakens
Darth Vader were they actually?
@@Loreage yep, you can find their names in the VFX section of the movie's credits
Ah yes, back in a simpler time when CZcams used to be a creative outlet for artists etc to show an audience what they were capable of.
Coming back over fourteen years later to what was very likely the first CZcams I ever watched is quite the nostalgic pilgrimage. Even today, this video holds up as incredibly entertaining and pleasant to behold. It fully epitomizes the original purpose of CZcams: a platform made *for the community* to share their creations with the world. Those were better, simpler times.
Despite how homogenized and soulless the corporation of CZcams is today, it's truly great how we can go back and watch these old gems that remain cataloged for generations both old and new to enjoy. Time capsules like these are important. They remind us that true talent and genuine production exist at all points in time, hopefully inspiring a bit of optimism that times will always improve.
Every year or so I come back to these masterpieces of old CZcams.
Same brother.
You know you did a lightsaber duel right when it's exhilarating even though you know who's gonna win.
this is a better choreographed fight than the throne scene in the last jedi
This duel beats 95% of duels seen in the Star Wars movie series. Great work!
I remember watching this with my cousin and thinking about how awesome this was...Can't believe it took me this long to decide to go looking for it
Ryan is my cousin. Lol
12 years later I still think this is quality
17yrs later and still better than the sequels
My dad showed me this when I was about 4 and I loved it. At the time I didn't know what CZcams was so I always asked him to play the lightsabour video. Memories...
I have checked this video after kind'o 15 years, and this is still the best ever lightsaber duel. Congratulation! :)
Nearly 14 years and I'm still watching this shit
I will always love these videos. Along with all the old Star Wars fan stuff. The fact that it’s been over ten years amazes me.
I always wanted to make a Star Wars fan film because of videos like this. Unfortunately I never was able to and probably never will. It’s alright though. At least there’s awesome stuff like this around for me to watch instead
I just watched a doc. called Backyard Blockbusters which featured this short.
Outstanding. Good effects, cinematography, and choreography.
Bravo.
This battle is better than every battle in sequels

@@loganmakesvideos8652as an FX artist, should have choreographed the fights.

Here from Star Wars Theory!
Me too. It’s pretty funny. I’ll give it a like.
15 years and it’s still cool, this mesmerized me as a kid
I've been watching this video for 14 years or so now. My dad showed it to me at 8 or so. Everytime I come back to it, it's just so dadgum good. Floods me with memories of watching it over and over, and it's just so impressive. Easily the best fan star wars duel on youtube
Now "Dorkman" knows how to display a badass Makashi,
My fav is Ataru or Atura not for sure, or the one today used, then there is jouy is my sec fav
My favorite would have to be juyo because of it's aggressiveness and use of martial arts
Hey Everyone, Dorkman was the victim in a terrible drunk driving accident last night. While walking back to work from a dinner break, a drunk driver ran the curb and hit Micheal. He is in critical condition and has a long road ahead of him. Our company has setup a GoFundMe page to help pay for the medical costs and offer any support for him we can. Please Donate what you can or share this story. Link will be in the post below this but if it doesn't search @DorkManScott or #SaveDorkman on twitter to find a bunch of support links

MarkHawkCam What's the word on DM?
Still one of my favorite videos period, you guys are vicious
The nostalgia is flowing through me...
The memories are coming back...
It feels good...
Saw this video back in my middle school days. So nostalgic.
Who is here after Rise of Skywalker and wants actually good Star Wars content?
Man... it's so funny coming back to this clip... I remember being a kid and watching this... Now I'm a grown ass adult and I came back to it. And it is also kind of funny that this fight choreography is better planed and executed than any fight in the 3 new movies..
Hey Ryan Wieber and Michael Scott, I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I watched it back in 2006 probably a 100 times and my friends tried to make our own video and quickly learned how hard and how utterly amazing this video really is. Anyway, I've been watching your duels with my 3 year old son, and I still marvel. Amazing work. Also, congratulations on all the success you've been getting lately. I wouldn't really freak out if I met any hollywood celebrity, but if I met the both of you, I would completely freak out.
Oh my god! I remember watching this when it first came out... :)
Why is it that Ryan and the rest seem to fight in spaces with very expensive equipment in the room? lol.
This is still one of the best lightsaber fights. Every time I look at a fan film and see this I am like "you guys need to take lessons from these guys."
This video is STILL one of the best fan made Star Wars videos ever made in my humble opinion.
It’s been 15 years and I still come back to watch it.
This was actually better and more creative than most of the duels in the movies, minus that extremely crappy twist ending.
That "crappy twist ending" that somehow ended up on the silver screen in the last jedi LOL. I'm not defending the ending I just think its really weird.
Veritable Veritablility dang that is Ironic lol
Funnily enough, Ryan Wieber actually worked as an FX artist on The Force Awakens
Wow, you can't tell at all that Michael has taken fencing lessons
I used to think this was the coolest video in existence when I was little. You should do a remake of it!
That was better-choreographed than the actual films.
This gives me so much memories.
I know it isn't that big a move but at 1:56 - 1:57 that move where he blocks behind his back then strikes upward always struck me as very smooth.
Well this is the most best lightsaber duel ever on CZcams. So much clever ideas, really well effected lightsaber, and the fight is so god damn good! RyanVSDorkman will always be the #1
NOTHING disney could come up with could ever compare to the floor sequence. So much creativity and tension!
still the best fan lightsaber battle Ive seen on youtube, I even remember the name of this from like even a few years back..
do a crossguard battle guys!
Still one of the best lightsaber plays... EVER!
One detail I love is Dorkman uses the same method of drawing his lightsaber across both videos! Great attention to character.
Wow can't believe its been 14 years since this came out! I was in high school at the time and now here I am watching again during 2020 while we wait for the COVID-19 pandemic to let up. Still an awesome set of videos after all this time!
This shall become a "CZcams Classic"
that's hella rad and I like how u guys battled on the floor that was genius
Can't believe this is 15 years ago.. one of the first vids I ever watched here
Épico hermano, vamos por viejas arroba el cruz azul y forloko carajo!!
I first watched this in 2010 and I thought it was amazing now I just found it again 14 years later!
Really creative choreography when they're both on the ground.
16 years on and I still come back occasionally.
I remember watching this video in 2006, I cannot believe I managed to find It again
Watched this when it came out. Watching it now is nostalgic, and honestly these videos are still better than some of the "dueling" videos on CZcams today.
Thank you, SuperMega
This was my introduction to the Internet thanks to my Dad. I was shown this vid when I was 3, I'm 20 now lmfao.
Lmao hell yeah your dad raised you well 💀
I remember watching this when it first dropped on CZcams. How can this be 17 years already???!!!
I remember this one from High School! That's insane it been 8 years already, wow. Great video guys.
So like what, makashi and Shien?
And Djem so.
Yeah Dorkman was using Makashi
I think that Ryan is using a combination of Shien, Soresu and Ataru, whereas Dorkman used Makashi and Shien
Omg more star wars nerds yaaaay
(No offence;-;)
I can't even transition smoothly using Windows Movie Maker...
That's because you can't do shit with Movie Maker. You'll need After Effects and Premiere or Sony Vegas.
I used to watch this video as a kid so much. It was a couple years old then. 26 currently.
The fact that you managed to creat a lightsaber fight incorporating reverse grip and still making it look good is genuinely impressive for it being almost 20 years old. The world was blessed when it received this masterpiece
Damn 15 years ago. Shit I'm old.
The new Star Wars: The Last Jedi copies Ryan Vs Dorkman in four moves.
LittleRedRhuari RRR Not sure what you mean. I liked TLJ and RVD.
LittleRedRhuari RRR No worries! I hear you.
My favorite Star Wars lightsaber duel of all time, including the actual canonical films, lol.
Simple and to the point, outstanding fight choreography and effects editing, a passion project that has aged very well IMHO (the image resolution notwithstanding).
A classic Star Wars fan film.
Thank you.
I remember watching this as a kid. such a nostalgic video.
Most of these comments are really unnecessary... But boys will be boys. Anyway I just wanted to say that I have practiced saber wars with some of my friends, we got our sabers custom made and the barrel detaches from clear tube that holds the light. That's most likely what kind I saber they have so they could make this a lot more realistic In videos. :)

3:52 spoiler rey vs kylo ren? :v
Yeah 12 years early.
I love how this is so well choreographed. Meanwhile the sequel trilogy fights are just two kids playing in their backyard with sticks.
Man has it really been over ten years? I remember watching things likevl this all the time. I miss my childhood. Things just aren't the same anymore.
3:53 Even Rian Johnson has seen it
Trying to figure out which one I like better.
Still one of the greatest uploads ever graced upon CZcams.
2020 Vision, Baby!
I miss these kinds of videos i used to watch them everyday
This was way ahead of its time
So this is how they came up with Snoke's death in TLJ.
So many years later and it still holds up. Old CZcams, I sure do miss it. Still remembering when my friends would all get together to watch all the fan duels we could at my house. Good old days.
15 years later and this is an absolute classic!
