    I recently heard a great quote on the subject of gender equality; I'll paraphrase as best as it applies here:
    Women tend to fuss over the idea of being able compete with men at a traditionally masculine role or profession, under the assumption that it will prove their equality. But their very participation in these historically male-dominated fields is already proof of their equality. People don't compete to prove their equality, they compete to prove their superiority.

    What's happening is pretty common in corporate America
    Disney made a point to shift to making money and not worrying about the story maybe 10-15 years ago. The CEO said it, so it's not speculation.
    What they did is they had decades of good will from fans built up and they banked on that while pushing out remakes of remakes and sequal after sequal with no interesting stories and now the good will has expired.
    It's like there was a tool company in my state who made high quality tools then got bought out by a Chinese company and they changed all of the metal parts to plastic and made everything cheaper while charging the same and it was a success for about a decade because the brand had a sterling reputation. Now the chickens have come home to roost and now they're known as the cheap brand and I actually don't remember the last time I saw them on the shelves now that I'm typing this. I'm sure they're alive still but they were the gold standard and are now a joke.

    • @cracmar03
      @cracmar03 Před 9 měsíci

      'wokism' didn't killed it. Lack of creativity, disrespect to their legacy - remember what they did to their classic animators after "Princess and the Frog" ? Not only did they screwed up that movie by complete lack of promotion (you can't tell me this company is 'woke' when they treated only animated movie with african cast like that) but they screwed the very people who build their brand. Then they started to disrespect medium of animation further with these cheap live actions that everyone hated. To put simply, Disney married Hollywood and it's mindset thus betraying itself and it's core audience. If you were animation fan, and loved their movies, there were couple of years where Disney was last place that cared about you. People did NOT forget. And they did NOT return. And that's what killed it.
      People loved Disney, while simulanously hating Hollywood - latter for example was so offended by animated movies being capable of winning 'best picture' that they specifically made category 'best animated movie' to evade ever recognizing animation as equal to their live crap.
      Story of Disney downfall is way longer and more complex then to simply lump it on new crappy slogan of mainstream 'wokism' which is idiotic in itself. Disney and mainstream would piss from fear if they ever could face anything that's 'woke'. Corporations are too spineless and wanting 'safety' for investment then to ever do anything woke.
      There is a reason why Matrix was made by not known people in industry.

    • @Bopperann
      @Bopperann Před 9 měsíci

      @@cracmar03 Woke openly wars against "tradition." Woke sacrifices art for the message. Woke finds organic ideas to be toxic. Woke are so radically left that they often eat their own for not being woke enough.
      "Corporations" have been forcing "diversity," "inclusion," and "equity" into EVERYTHING for over a decade. From Ben and Jerry's Icecream to movies like The Woman King, it's constantly slapping your face, unsubtle and smug.
      "The Princess and the Frog" was weak because it was greatly underbaked. Woke is all about signaling one's virtue, the end product doesn't matter- so long as the audience is (temporarily) fooled.
      Wreck it Ralph was such a delight, and than Wreck it Ralph two contradicted everything the first one established while character assassinating Ralph to ""empower"" Vanellope. Recently there was Strange Worlds, one of the most visually uninteresting movies ever to have been animated with a large budget, marketing on the "diverse" main characters.
      Companies have only started to feel the backlash from the audience because these diversity hires (aka 'woke') don't make art, they make (money hemorrhaging) propaganda. For a few years, they got away with it, but now the public is waking up to the sh!t flavored gruel they've been consuming.

    Canning a project doesn’t make them some money back through a tax write off. It’s a recognition that the ongoing costs of the project are higher than the ongoing revenues (essentially that it costs them even more money to keep it around). They’re just halting their losses.
    At the end of the year, the loss on the project can offset some of their revenues to reduce overall net income. That reduces the corporate taxes they are responsible for. If they kept the program up, the loss would be greater-as would the write off. But it’s the equivalent of spending a dollar (cost of film) to buy a quarter (tax write off).

    • @darkpuppetlordful
      @darkpuppetlordful Před 9 měsíci +2

      I'd say it's more akin to betting a dollar (as disney isn't making the content with the intent to can it for a tax reduction) and cashing out after dropping below and winning back a quarter. (As the closer to net 0 a movie gets without crossing that line, the worse it is as a tax reduction source)

    • @stoneymahoney9106
      @stoneymahoney9106 Před 9 měsíci +1

      It's not just a case of halting losses. Movie projects are set up as individual businesses by the studios. If the project is canned, that business is bankrupt. Shareholders of bankrupt businesses can't get their money back directly, but they can offset those losses against their tax bills, usually amortized over a statutory period. Think of it like crashing a car you own, writing it off rather than getting it repaired, and being allowed to deduct a quarter of the cost of the car from the overall tax you pay for the next four years. That's just one of the many mind-blowing features of Hollywood Accounting.

    • @Kyle-sr6jm
      @Kyle-sr6jm Před 9 měsíci

      Cutting the loss and tax write off arent the real problem.
      Disney can cut the loss, salvage tax dollars, but it cannot regain the time.
      Movies and media content drive not only profit from the production, but profit from all their other offerings (merchandising, parks, etc)
      If they are not producing a "hot new thing" it can take years to get the next "hot thing" out in front of audiences.
      The only media idea that caught fire Disney produced in the past decade I can think of was Baby Yoda, and they had ZERO plan or product in place for marketing him.
      Not only is Disney unable to produce sellable content, they are absolutely not capturing the audiences imagination, and when they do, it is with something they could not see coming.

    Disney stock is currently still selling at 66x its yearly earnings. That is still extremely high. For those that don't know what that means, that means if Disney makes their exact same profit from this year every year from now on, it would take investors 66 years to turn a profit. The market is still betting on Disney to grow at this price. They were at a peak of over 100x earnings for a while, which is absolutely crazy. That is exploding tech start up levels of valuations where you expect 10x increases in revenue in a few years due to the company rapidly growing.

    Re Snow White, one of the things that gets me is that, while they're thinking of it as oh so modern and progressive, the kind of movie they want to make was already made over a decade ago. Snow White and the Huntsman had her be a warrior who romanced someone that was not a prince (he was a Duke's son). Come to think of it, in both versions the Evil Queen is played by an actress who is taller and more beautiful than Snow White's, lol. And the 7 dwarves were played by actors of average height (in SWatH they were CGI'ed to look small)- a casting choice that was controversial among little people the first time, so I don't know why Disney didn't expect that now.

    • @EvilDoresh

    The big problem with doing a modern FF story is the relationship between Reed Richards and Sue Storm. Back in the 60s, nobody would bat an eye at a Professor having an affair with one of his grad students. Today that won't fly, and so they have to make Richards more "age appropriate" to be with Sue. And then there's this strange perverse idea that Richards has to be a working class kind of guy (yet with a PHD). In the comics, he was clearly wealthy. He owned the Baxter building. But, can't have an intelligent, moral rich guy in today's cinema. Would send the wrong message? Tony Stark was wealthy, but with lots of baggage and a drug addiction. Richards was as straight laced as they come.

    Disney is particularly good because if they fail, rather than recover, it's not a huge loss. Anime exists, and even if it didn't, fewer quality animation products in the world (when we have 100 years of good stuff) is hardly a huge problem.

    I’ve been saying for decades that Disney has screwed up more good stories than anybody else. Consider The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo. That is one hell of a story. The ending will bring a grown man to tears. And yet Disney saw fit to stick in cutesy talking gargoyles? Please, Disney just stop.

    Actually soooooo much bad news is cooked into DIS stock that there is a good possibility that the downside risk is limited at this point
