She’s a few months younger than me and when I started watching her I found her relatable in that she was living a life like mine. She was too lazy to constantly look conventionally "pretty" and she was addicted to coffee. I was also all of those things. I think when I subscribed she was at about 500K. I unsubscribed a few months after she moved to LA. What it came down to was I didn’t feel like I related to her anymore. I went to college, while she went to Fashion Week. None of that is bad. This sounds stupid, but it feels like I just drifted apart from a friend. I pity that she gets so much criticism for simply growing up. I recently resubscribed and have been enjoying her content again. I wish her the best.

My daughter was a sophomore in Hs and was so depressed and suicidal. I pulled her out and she got her GED 6weeks later and started college at 16. Some kids are NOT cut out for traditional school. We’ve GOT to stop pushing this fallacy that there’s only one type of education. Also kids are the WORST! The bullying and peer pressure is disgusting these days. It’s SO much worse than when I went to HS in the late 90’s!

Some content creators I think would be interesting to do a video on:
    - Bestdressed (she has a similar kind of thing to Emma where she started out more relatable and is still trying to be relatable despite living a more unattainable lifestyle, but there’s also an element of sustainability(?) with the Amazon video controversy. generally I think there’s a lot of things you can analyze in her videos because she puts a lot of her personal life in them, which differentiates her from other fashion youtubers - also her artsy editing! kind of on trend with the “main character” trope that’s going around)
    - one of the 2014 morning routine girls (Niki & Gabi, laurdiy, Alisha Marie, zoella etc. I think Niki and gabi could be interesting because of their whole concept of being different from each other and having separate channels. they’ve also had their fair share of controversies and are pitted against each other a lot. Laurdiy could be interesting to talk about because of her relationship with alex, and how their break up impacted her core audience. Alisha Marie had a burn out at one point, and she’s sort of managed to rebrand herself after that. She also has a really successful podcast.)
    - Liza Koshy (her transition to more traditional celeb-dom and how she’s kind of faded from CZcams.)
    - Lily Singh (her venture into a late night talk show, how her core audience has outgrown her, becoming “unfunny”) similarly, you could also do Lele pons
    - safiya nygaard (she’s the most successful ex buzzfeed employee, and she has a really unique style of content, also a super unique personality, and she’s found a really successful niche where she combines a more analytical approach to stereotypically fashion/diy videos. She’s also had a burnout/break recently)
    - James charles (I feel like we all know his story well by now, but a more objective analysis about his content would be really interesting to hear, especially because I feel like he really understands marketing and is always ahead of the trends, and has been able to regain that upward trajectory he had before his major scandal)
    - Jenna marbles (would be really fitting, especially since she’s quit now. Like a commemoration 😢 also itd be fun to hear about old CZcams in the early 2010s!)
    - joanna ceddia (would be an interesting comparison to Emma chamberlain, seeing as how she’s almost the anti Emma chamberlain in the sense that she’s also a “relatable” girl, but not the stereotypically popular LA girl who’s into fashion. Also her content is very well done and it’d be interesting to talk about it from the college youtuber genre perspective)

"The Success of Emma Chamberlain ended up being the downfall of Emma Chamberlain" you are spot on with this comment and the ramifications of branding yourself as "relatable" it definitely doesn't give you longevity IMO the only person who seems to maintain it well was Jenna Marbles

    • @laceye3485
      @laceye3485 Před 3 lety +209

kawaii koibito I think with Jenna it’s partly because we really have no real idea of how much money she’s made or how much she’s worth. She’s never had ads, never done sponsorships. Only makes youtube and sponsorship money from the podcast and twitch once she started that. She made her money off appearances and speaking engagements. So that’s always been a private aspect of her life. Even well into her career, she was still renting a home. It wasn’t some big fancy home either. She’s also got an edge in that she has a bachelors in psychology. Not that I don’t think her relatability is genuine, I really think it is, I just think she was able to showcase that in an effective way through the videos and stuff. Jennas are a dime a dozen. She always, from the start, had that relatability factor.
And now I need to watch some old Jenna content because I miss her so much 🥺

Hi i’m 24 and I loooove Emma. I think the most important thing to note about Emma is that she shows her acne, she records when she’s in bed and not all done up. I think that’s SO rare and great for teens. She’s a rich youtuber now yes but she’s one of the very few youtubers I see NOT buying gaudy t-shirt’s that say gucci all over them. Her expensive clothes are smartly chosen and most of her clothes are thrifted and it’s all very approachable for everyone. Louis Vuitton chose her to represent them because of that! Correct me if i’m wrong shes never done a house or apartment tour either.
Also I think she’s very smart and protects herself. All of her friendships (first Hannah Meloche/Summer/Dote girls, then Sister squad) she ended the relationships with them before they got into public drama. I think she knows now who her real friends are.
And I love the idea of the coffee company- and this latest launch I think she really took user feedback and put more of herself into it. I’m excited for her

I never cared for her so I may be biased, but I personally feel like she does that to try to be relatable because ultimately that is the image she wanted to put out. In a way I respect her for that because in our world now we tend to only show the beauty in our lives and she's letting people know that it's okay to be who you are. I just didn't like that in almost every video she put out she would advertise in some way 'hey i'm relatable just like you' because at the end of the day we're not. She's getting glammed up constantly, attending fashion shows, and meeting with designers while we all go to our 9 to 5 job. When i first heard about the cofffee i was pretty excited because I actually wanted to try it especially since she says coffee is her favorite thing, but sis is crazy if she thinks i'm gonna pay even more than the price of an apple charger for a substance that I can buy at any store for less than $5. I lost so much respect for her because it showed her in a different light for me. SO many influencers create things like these for their fans, but at the end of the day they don't care about the quality of the product because their sleeping in their million dollar houses while their bank account increases.

@@LuisMoreno-dx4pu hi!! i definitely agree with you on the whole relatability thing. i used to watch her a lot around 2018 and loved her content back then and slowly stopped watching as her content became less and less relatable. i subscribed for stuff like her car vlogs and thrift hauls and when she started drifting away from that style of content, i gradually just stopped watching. i haven’t kept up with her as a person in years, but i have been keeping up with her coffee stuff bc i am a huge coffee person (i make my own cold brew, make espresso on my stove, stuff like that). i honestly wouldn’t buy it regularly bc it’s too expensive for me, but comparing it to coffee you pay $5 for at the grocery store doesn’t really make sense. most of the time cheap coffee like folgers is roasted with lower quality beans and machines, and people who make coffee as a hobby rather than to just get some caffeine and make it through the day will pay more for higher quality beans. while chamberlain coffee is definitely overpriced (especially the accessories), there is a customer base of people out there who will pay that much for high-quality coffee, and i think that is who emma is trying to play to.

I don’t feel that emma really ever stopped being relatable I think she just grew up. She simply matured and became more private

One thing I will always remember about Emma was that she was a straight a student. Her parents mainly let her do online not because of money but because of that. Her mental health around school was because she took it very seriously. That’s why she talked about school so much. It was something she was good at so when she was also good at CZcams she probably also saw the link between her mental health and school.

I actually think they are similar in that they both have that “hey, it’s so easy to just chill and watch you talk” kind of thing. That’s where the similarities end, but it’s worth noting. The reason Tana has lasted so long is because it’s so easy to fall back into her version of relatability. Jacqueline Hill is one of those people too. Some people just have that magnetic personality.

I wish you would’ve gone more into how poorly she’s handled legitimate criticism of her. While the hate train that started up for her in 2018 was uncalled for, it feels like she swung the other way in terms of how to response to criticism and now won’t say anything at all. Like with her lack of being vocal about social issues, the fox eye thing, or going to parities during a pandemic, she’s just tried to sweep things under the rug as if not speaking out about that is the same as responding to haters. I still really enjoy watching her “hey I’m a messy and relatable teen!” content, it has definitely been disheartening to see that she keeps choosing to not be a mature content creator when it would actually be appreciated.

pam 28 (if I remember correctly) she only started posting stuff after a while of fans saying things and it was like just a little thing. I totally think there’s an argument to be made of influencers not *having* to say things, but still it was an odd look. And for the other stuff, it seems like she’s just deleted things and tried to move on without saying much if anything. I’m j not an avid follower, but I think that points to the issue-I’ll hear about/see what she does “wrong” but then whatever little apology she does, it’s way after the fact. It’s fine for her to mess up, like even the fox eye thing seemed to be overblown, but it’s how she handles things afterwards that has put a bad taste in my mouth.

I ended up graduating high school at 15 and had 4 associate degrees by the time I was 19. It's not perfect for everyone but it definitely can be good for some people who just click with the style of online learning. I wish it didn't have such a big stigma around it. I had tons of friends despite being schooled online and that is the case for most people.

I think the key to Connor and Ricky is the fact they were in collab channels. I used to LOVE O2L (even connors Collab channel he started before that called collab at sea). I think the problem came from the fact they were constantly all together, some members slacked off and that caused drama in a genuine friendship group. The members then started to worry about the collab channel and put effort into that and would neglect their main channels and would produce low quality videos that their fans weren’t used to.

It was so nice, and comforting seeing Emma make that decision when I was 17. During my junior year I struggled with depression, and ended up missing two months of my first semester. Which ultimately lead to my grades suffering, although I had always been a great student. It felt that my previous 11 years of school had gone to waste. This lead me to decided it would be best to go an alternative route, get my GED and attend college early. Meanwhile, the people I discussed this decision with discouraged me, telling me I’d never get a job, get into a good college, etc. Luckily, I went through with what I wanted and it has been one of the best decisions I could of made for myself. I think we need to teach more teens that it is not always bad to take an untraditional route when it comes to school. You will not be considered a “failure.” And you should prioritize your mental health, while pursuing education and a diploma. I’m so glad she was open about her journey, and I would encourage anyone that if high school is not for you, there are plenty of other ways to get your diploma. Sorry if this was long, I just felt like putting it out there !! 💕

I dropped out of high school my last quarter of my senior year because I was suffering with depression, anxiety, abuse, and neglect which was exacerbated by abusive teachers who would call me out and make me cry in front of other students. I graduated from an adult education program at a local community college. My partner also dropped out his senior year due to injuries and depression/anxiety related to said injuries. He graduated online school. We both went to get bachelors degrees a bit later in life, for him 24 for me 32. Both are valid and I appreciate you talking about the idea that there is no one way to get an education and that sometimes it's better for the child. This very structured idea of education is just societal gatekeeping and stigmatizes people who take different routes. High school was awful despite being popular and having an active social life because the adults around me were fXXXing awful. It's something we need to normalize a bit more imo.

41yo here. I watch a lot of dumb shit, so I feel like maybe I can talk?
Emma was a kid who was clearly privileged, but had really good parents who made her earn what she had. They weren't loaded, but they were pretty comfortable and made her work for it. Since then, she's LOADED because she was a bit of a phenom on CZcams. She was the quirky girl who wasn't annoying and super relatable, who also had an eye for editing like not many others have, and it got her a shit ton of followers.
Emma needs to be a director. She is so damned creative and I think she'd make some really interesting stuff.
That being said, I don't watch a lot of her videos because I just don't relate to her. Am old. But, I can absolutely appreciate them.

i remember when emma addressed the whole dropping out of school thing and i actually related to that a lot as i’ve had my own struggles with mainstream education. it’s not for everyone and people are so quick to judge you and your parents even if you’re just doing what’s best for you and your mental health. though i never particularly watched emma’s content that much in the past (and now it’s just not the sort of thing i watch anymore) i can see her appeal. she definitely went from a relatable personality with a relatable life to a relatable personality with an aspirational/unattainable life. so of course she’s changed a bit. also she started out at 16, to expect her not to change isn’t reasonable. i’m glad she seems to be getting back that passion for making videos again though!

But there was a point where he started making a lot of videos that were almost, out of touch? There was one where he did a video of taking a VR vacation during the start of the pandemic and I was just like??? I guess it's a cool idea and the appeal just isn't there for me but I just rubbed me the wrong way.

Ik im two months late so nobody will see this but i also wanna mention that at the same time that she and ethan broke up and the sister squad disbanded (in part bc of the breakup and in part bc of james’s scandal), emma also dropped her friends ellie and hannah, who were another little squad that she was in. ALSO in this time period, she moved, got and editor, and got new friends who she talks about in her podcasts like they are her family. She really had a period of realizing her content was getting lazy because of the pressure she felt to make her editing supremely good, and decided to put herself first. I think thats when a lot of positive changes started coming. It still took a little while for her videos to get good again, but you could tell as a viewer that she was trying to (over the period of like 6 months) finally put herself and her mental health first. I think the emma we have now is almost as happy as the emma we started with- and as a long time viewer, it makes me really happy and proud.

Like, shes a human being, of course shes going to evolve and change. And at least she doesnt rub her success in peoples faces like some influencers that rise to fame very quickly usually do... also that being said, I dont agree with some of the stuff shes been doing lately, mainly going out and partying during the pandemic. Its disappointing to see someone you support doing stuff like that, and potentially influencing thousands of other people to do it also.

I've admittedly been like binge watching your videos (old and new) and when you were discussing Emma as a more relatable content creator at the beginning I realized that I'm probably so so so into your content right now because of how down to earth and relatable and realistic you are. Back before covid I was so head-over-heels for the big creators and the glamour of their luxury lifestyles but I've fallen so out of "love" with them as quarantine has gone on. Similarly - I also watched people like Amy Landino who pushed productivity and a workaholic lifestyle but after a while (and after losing my job to covid and graduating from school) consuming that kind of content started to really take a toll on my mental health. I felt like I had to keep up and make myself "work" for nothing, which kind of speaks to the illusioned drive a lot of people experience to live up to a luxurious lifestyle that they can't afford, simply because they see their favorite creators decked out in louis vuitton.

You did a great job with this video. I’m 23, so I never watched Emma really, but I think she fundamentally impacted that entire generation even if they weren’t subscribed or knew who she really was. Honestly she walked so that Charlie could run. I’m blown away she’s only been on here since 2017 And I can completely get her fatigue. That something she loved and used as an escape would go onto crushing her. That happened with me and swimming, and the swimming meme account I created. I created that account as a copping mechanism when I had an injury and couldn’t swim as a 15 year old going into hs. By the time I hit senior year of hs and all of college, I could no longer relate to those memes and bc of other injuries, college recruiting and other pressure, swimming was no longer an escape and I completely stopped posting on that account despite having over 100k. However, that account was never me. People didn’t subscribe bc they liked my personality, they just liked the ideas I came up with but they didn’t know who I was really. I wasn’t making a full time income from it and wasn’t killing myself with editing. I could easily walk away while for her it was so much harder and her fan base is thousands of times the size of mine. And, I was able to have that account open new doors for me to further my career. I guess my point is, I don’t know how she spent so much time editing for so many years and trying to come up with content AND have her other business. She is an amazing women and deserves every ounce of fame she has. I really wish her the best and that she continues to find happiness. Honestly she could start her own bad ass clothing line and completely flip the world of teen fashion, but that will probably change bc she is no longer a teen. Any hoo, great job with this video
