    I sharpened this for my buddy at work. His Instagram is linked above. This D2 took to the stones readily. It was such a breeze to sharpen. If only they all behaved this way

    Wow those sil carbide stones seem to cut fairly quickly, im actually impressed and considering I primarily used regular cbn or diamond plates and the Venev stones which I get sick of the venevs loading up so fast and constantly needing nagura stoned to bring out fresh abrasive I may just have to order some of these!

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před rokem

      Yea venev are decent but they have their quirks. I’ll take gritomatic sic stones over them any day of the week!

    Great job on the d2 with sic stones. I have a couple siberian yakut blades in a russian x12 mf equivalent of d2 and its tool steel .. definately some hard shit to sharpen on my Shaptons pros.
    i can get keeness but not shaving sharp so i break out my dmt hones and on a 600 and 1200 i can get my d2 shaving sharp both have a toothy but razor edge u can shave receipt paper or hair no problem. Stay sharp and keep up the great work my friend :)

      D2 can be a booger to get right. Having diamonds or sic helps 👍

    You can still preorder the rotating clamp. You scared me so I just went to the site and ordered it! I like the magnet but for heavy reprofiling or longer knives I think the clamp will work well.

      I'd still prefer Gritomatic Sic but they do require a light soaking. Venev are at least, splash n go.

      @@Jef I might get 1k and 2.5k as for lower grit. I still try to use this Norton Compas SiC that's made from India
      venev is great but will load with swarfs while that gritomaric is still cutting like a champ with no issues.

      @Jef  Před 3 lety

      @@RubricoA. If you want an even higher grit, Suehiro G-8 has a sic stone that is 8k. It can usually be found on ebay with or without a base, for around $100.

    Do you usually strop again after cutting the wire on the Bess i just have to assume that it dulls the apex slightly but i have not had one myself to verify that assumption personally

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před rokem

      I do the cut tests first. After the camera stop recording I usually do a few more passes on the strop just to make sure its clean. I’ve heard cutting the media does indeed damage the apex, but personally, I’ve never detected it. Anecdotal sure, but it’s all i got 😁

      Yea so glad I got these Gritomatic stones. They make just about any steel, a breeze

    • @JDStone20
      @JDStone20 Před 6 lety

      How is the polish with those stones before and after stropping? Also, do they dish a lot?

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 6 lety +1

      They will dish if you let em go for many sessions, but I stay on top of that. I flatten and condition my stones often. I've never seen excessive wear on these stones. The longest run I had with the 240, was with the Manix s110v. It only lasted about 6 minutes. They cut so quickly, there just isn't much visible wear in those sort of runs.

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 6 lety +1

      I've shown the polish with these stones in other videos. The 240, is as you would expect. Rough and deep. The 1k, is very classic. Imagine a 1k King, and you wouldn't be far off. The 2500 polish is the precursor to getting some luster. After stropping a bit, it will become reflective. Obviously not a mirror edge, as it has plenty of undercast in it.

    I’ve been looking at buying in an Ontario rat in D2 steel. The only things I have the sharpen a knife with our hard Arkansas stones and the oldtimey course whetrock. Exactly what does it take to sharpened D2 steel I typically won’t buy a knife I cannot sharpen with a small hard Arkansas stone I keep in my pocket.

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 2 lety

      I always called d2 my nemesis steel. I found it very difficult to sharpen bc i was using the wrong abrasives. D2 can be heat treated to fairly hard hrc scores. In doing so, it seemed for me, if i didn’t use silicone carbide (or diamond), i just couldn’t get a good edge. An Arkansas stone in my experience, can have difficulty cutting many modern steels, unless you are just microbeveling. As with all things in sharpening, your mileage may vary.

  • @JDStone20
    @JDStone20 Před 6 lety

    Jef, have you tried cigarette paper for a testing media? I have found that there are different thicknesses of cigarette papers, but they are thicker than magazine/newsprint/phonebook paper and it gives you a different test to test sharpness. Given the sharpness tester results you have shown and the testing on the paper you currently use, it might give you a different metric to judge by.

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes. Davetogo123 got me using those for a spell. I liked his technique for using them, but never really found it useful for my own sharpening. As long as my knives could cut clean and smooth through harbor freight paper, that was plenty enough for me.

    • @JDStone20
      @JDStone20 Před 6 lety

      Yeah, I am in a HHT phase right now for sharpness, I wish I could just be happy with push cutting phone book paper

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 6 lety

      I can't do hair tests. I shave my head, and my girl's hair is baby fine. I can't even get my razors to cut em. Honestly though, and you've heard me say this before :) , as long as it cuts smoothly through Harbor Freight paper, I am satisfied. I do understand the struggle, but getting that sort of high sharpness has never been a goal for me.

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 6 lety

      On another note, most of my edge testing in the descriptions, weren't after high sharpness. I was mainly testing EoU's consistency. As you can see in my recent tests, I started getting serious about the edges again. It seems the closer to 0 the scale reads, the more consistent the tests become. Is that just because when I was half assing it, the sharpness truly was all over the place, or is the tester really performing the way I have been observing? I don't know. I still got a full roll and a half to make that determination, before I chuck this thing over the balcony. :P
