    The Benchmade Griptilian and the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 have been titans of the EDC folding knife game for years. A big reason for their success is the use of their respective locking mechanisms - Spyderco's Compression Lock and Benchmade's AXIS Lock. We put these two knives head to head, but to make it extra interesting we included a third challenger: the Hogue EX03, whose Button Lock compares well with the other two knives.
    To win one of these knives:
    1.) Subscribe to the KnifeCenter CZcams Channel
    2.) Comment with which knife you would buy and why.
    Congratulations to David Everson, who we've reached out to as our big winner. If we haven't heard from David Everson by Monday at noon, we'll be randomly selecting a new winner. Stay tuned for more giveaways, everybody!

      @@ksimpson2804 I think I like it better than the Benchmades. The thumb hole on the Spyderco isn’t the prettiest thing but it is once you start using it, I also love the compression lock. Another thing I like better is the thin tip. My particular Benchmade that I have has kind of a blunt tip and it’s not the best for piercing tasks. The PM2 with its thin taper and full-flat grind give it a tip that’s great for piercing.

    Dear friends of KnifeCenter, Congratulations on your challenge!
    So, in my opinion, both are excellent, undoubtedly are the dream of consumption of all. The Griptilian axis lock is special for ambidextrous, but even so, the paramilitary 2 is unbeatable... my favorite!
    Unfortunately, here in Brazil, they arrive with prohibitive prices.

    I have owned both and prefer the PM2. Better quality control, nice broad full flat grind, great ergonomics, no springs in the locking mechanism that can fail, nice grippy g10, recessed full length steel liners on all models and a press fit lanyard tube that indexes the liners perfectly for a consistently smooth pivot and centered blade.

  • @AlfredoRGuillen
    @AlfredoRGuillen Před 5 lety +14

    I will go for the Paramilitary 2 every day of the week. Compression locks are safer, are ambidextrous, can be unlocked with gloves on and they don't accumulate gunk as the Benchmade axis lock does (they are way much easier to disassemble for cleanup purposes). Spyderco tolerances and quality control are superior to those in Benchmade models and prices are considerably lower. Blade in the Griptillian wobbles (horizontal blade play), grind is not particularly well achieved (inconsistent in both sides) and scales feel cheap. Hogue is out of this league as they produce beautiful kinves (heavy though) but still with quality control issues (blade centering, blade play, etc.). Paramilitary 2 or Para 3 are way much better option than Griptillian and Mini Griptillian.

    • @patricksmatrick6193
      @patricksmatrick6193 Před 5 lety +1

      Funny, my Spydercos have just as much dirt built up as my Benchmades, so that's not relavent. I don't have a single Benchmade with an issue, grind, centering, lock up, and, I have sent far more broken Spydercos back for repair then Becnhmades. So after your done with your fanboy rant, put both brand's blade steels head to head and you'll notice that Benchmade comes out leagues ahead of Spyderco in terms of sharpenabiilty and edge retention. It's all in the heattreat and sadly Spyderco isn't there, even Buck has them beat.

    These are two of the best knives at their price-point on the market. I own both of them (and many others) but consider the utility from several angles. For overall utility, the Paramiltary 2 can't be beat. it is a very tough knife. I consider it a workhorse for the blade strenth and edge retention. However, it is a little too bulky for my comfort as a pocket too. The Benchmade Griptillian, on the other hand, is a much better EDC, in my opinion. It feels more comfortable in the hand, opens quickly with a flick, and can handle reasonably descent levels of every day chores. Both locks work very well. I like the Spyderco spine lock and feel that it is a bit superior to the Griptillian for really tough tasks that put a lot of stress on the lock mechanism. The Griptillian affords very quick deployment and it hasn't failed me yet. However, I'm not sure I would rely on it for high stress pressures in work situations. I love both knives, but my choicein which knife I would choose on a given day is more based on what I will be doing with it at the time.

    After collecting for about 6 years I finally added a PM2 to my collection. I own 7 or 8 each of Spyderco and Benchmade, and appreciate the advantages of both locking styles. To tell the truth, I hesitated buying a PM2 because it seemed like it might might be a little big to EDC. Moreover, it didn’t seem as compelling as something like Spyderco’s Vallotton (also a bit chunky for EDC) or as collectible as a Damascus Delica with jigged bone scales, for example. I have to say, however, that I couldn’t put it down. It felt so perfectly sized and mechanically solid, I carried it every day for a couple weeks, and I usually carry a different EDC every day. The Griptilian is certainly fast deploying and arguably more comfortable to hold with it’s more rounded cross-section, but the PM2 feels more like a piece of engineering. That said, I own a Hogue EX01 and it gives the big guys serious competition!

    @WC-JKD-BJJ Před 5 lety +2

    I own both of these knives and they are two of my favorites for EDC. I like the Paramilitary 2 better for outdoor use because I find the blade shape to be more versatile in a variety of different grips and the compression lock to be less prone to breakage than the Griptilian's axis lock (because of the the omega springs). However, I think the Griptilian is better for carry around the office because of its deep-pocket clip (on the G-10/20CV model) and more subdued appearance (i.e., it looks a bit less "tactical" than the Paramilitary). If I could only have just one, I'd probably go with the Paramilitary because it is a better slicer, but it's a very close call. Both are excellent knives.

    I've been wanting a mini grip for a while now, I like all the options it has so you really get a chance to customize it to your liking. That being said, that houge micro flipper looks to be a pretty sweet little flipper and I really like aluminum handle scales. Also, the paramilitaries and griptilIans are pretty common and lots of people have them, so I think I'd buy the houge for the materials, fit and finish and just to have something really cool that you don't see very often. I would have to pick the griptilian (my personal choice would be the upgraded model) because of the deep carry pocket clip and a very very slight edge of the axis lock operating system. I would defiantly go with the Para 2. The flat grind is just unbeatable and far as a slicer and cutter. It sharpens easier and the ergonomics are better. My work EDC is the low end Spyderco Manix 2 with CTS-BD1. And even though this is not a super steel.
    It performs great. A runner up would be the Hogue because of the design. I like the Benchmade's universal usage but it falls short before the mighty Spyderco masterpiece.

    Thanks David. Great job!
    In this match-up, I have to pick the G10 Griptilian, in 20CV steel. Why? The Axis-lock, gives me a better purchase on the knife, while accessing the lock. It is also the only ambidextrous lock choice, between these two knives. I personally, also have to demerit the Paramilitary 2, for having 12 pocket-clip holes drilled into it. 9 of which, will never be used, and do nothing but look ugly, and collect dirt and dust.
    I need to ask you too, if I could please? Just who was it, that decided on this match-up? And why was the Manix 2 not picked, to go up against the Griptilian? I will argue, that it would be a much better comparison. Which would then swing my earlier Benchmade Griptilian choice, over to the Spyderco Manix 2.

    Even though I own both, if i had to go back and do it over I'd pick the pm2 all day, in S35vn if I'm choosing. The action, flat grind, and blade shape on the pm2 make it a thing of magic

    I own a Spyderco because of the thumb opening design. This is a well built knife.

    EX-03. I had the EX-01 before and it was stellar. It was probably the most comfortable to use knife that I've ever owned.

    I'd probably buy the para 3....but dang that micro flip really entreuges me!!! Griptillian just doesn't speak to me. Thanx for this opportunity!!

    Given the choice of the three, the EX03 seems to be the most interesting to me. Primarily because I've yet to handle a button lock from Hogue. Their Q&C seems to be top notch from what I have heard as well.

    Pm2 I have one already and is a work horse. Can never have too many Spyderco’s

    I like that Hogue EXO3 but wouldn’t mind the SpyderCo ParaMilitary 2 either. I like blades with some size, neat 3.5 in. Good reviews. Thank you!

    I would buy the Griptilian. I love the Axis lock and the ergonomics fit my hand perfectly. Made in Oregon, too!

    I have both PM2 and the Griptillian in 20CV sheepsfoot and standard. I carry the Griptillians most often.

    Having owned both of these knives in one of their iterations, I would personally buy a Griptillian as mine died while cutting up waterlogged carpet last year. However... If I owned neither knife, I would recommend the PM2 as my go to purchase choice. Excellent QC and an incredible performer for nigh any task you can throw at it. The ergos on the PM2 also allow for a much more solid grip for heavy cutting. Either way, you get a great EDC knife.

    I have handled both knives and I'd definitely buy the paramilitary 2 hands down. The feel and fit and finish is superb! It also weighs less than it looks. I love both blade shapes but the full flat grind of the PM 2 would be more useful to me for slicing task. The handle feels more comfortable in my hand. I currently have my eye on the s35vn version. Drool!

    Spyderco pm 2 all the way for me! Love the design. I recon it to be a great edc and will use it whenever possible on all my light duty cutting task.

    I believe I would go with the Benchmade Axis Lock. I inherited an automatic Benchmade and love the feel and sharpness of the blade!!

    Really tough to choose, but I'd go with the Para2 because of the full serration and the 4 position clip. The Benchmade upgraded model with Tanto point looks really nice though!

    I carried a Para 2 for over a year, but my Griptilian with G-10 handles and CPM-20CV blade has been my EDC now since 2016. The fit and finish is impeccable, with a perfectly centered blade and zero play. It holds a shaving-sharp edge and requires little maintenance. The Spyderco is great knife, but my Benchmade is just perfect for me!

    It is hard to choice as at one time I own both and love them. If it come to my final decision, I will pick the pm 2 over the benchmade. It would make a great back up knife for camping trip.

  • @TheOGTonyG
    @TheOGTonyG Před 5 lety

    I've got a PM2 and Grip (sheepsfoot) both in S30V. They are regular parts of my EDC rotation and both are among the best production modern folders I own.
    If I were to buy a new one, it would likely be a PM2 in S110V. The PM2 is pretty close to a perfect folding knife. It's a difficult choice, however, because I could easily go for a Benchmade in a similar steel.

    I'd go for the Para 2....love the ergos/feel in hand and shape of the Spyderco blades.....I do love a nice Hogue though.
