    I like the Paramilitary 2, and I have a couple (one in Maxamet and one in S110V), but I agree that there are better knives for nearly any kind of specific uses. For heavy use, I’d say Manix 2 by a lot. For normal everyday use, I believe they made a way better knife when they rethought it in the Para 3 (my all-time favorite pocketknife of them all). For a smaller, easier to hide, kinda gentlemanly pocketknife I think the Lil’ Native with the compression lock is perfect. It’s hard to argue with the versatility of the PM2, which is probably why it’s pretty universally loved. It’s pretty good at everything, but there are knives in their lineup that are WAY better for specific needs which takes precedence over general versatility for a lot of and maybe even most people.

    • @ssunfish
      @ssunfish Před rokem +1

      Very well said!! I can see that being the case, other models than PM 2 if dialing in for specific tasks.

    • @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
      @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney Před rokem

      @@ssunfish If your knife is just a daily tool (not for firewood processing or a weapon or other such unrealistic expectations), I think the Para 3 is a much better, while similar, product. I think men with larger than average hands might get pinched by it, though, according to some reviews. I wear a size large work glove and find it perfect, even MORE comfortable to use than the PM2, but I'm just one guy and everyone's different. I find the PM2 blade to be a bit long and unwieldy, comparatively, for most of my daily knife tasks (package opening, nail cleaning, pencil sharpening, wire stripping, thread trimming, etc.).
      All that said, I've taken to carrying a Leatherman Free P4 in my pocket every work day and most days off, which means I need a knife that will fit in my watchpocket. For that purpose, I have two dailies now; a Pro-Tech Sprint (if they ever release a smaller iteration of their Malibu reverse tanto flipper, that'll undoubtedly be my forever EDC, but I'm not holding my breath. It is an absolutely stunning knife in every way, though, and if it were 1" shorter closed it would be beyond perfect for me) on work days, since the watchpocket of my preferred work jeans (All American Clothing Company AA1776) is pretty undersized, and a Benchmade Mini Bugout with Flytanium classic brass scales and Flytanium black hardware (classiest knife I've ever owned) on non-work days since my preferred non-work jeans (Brave Star True Straight) have a generous watchpocket and in the summer when I don't have to look nice I wear cargo shorts that I can hide anything in.
      My S110V Lil Native compression lock will fit in my non-work jeans, but it makes it mighty tough to fish my Zippo out of my main pocket, so it's relegated to 'dress/gentleman's knife' usage, which means it actually bums me out since I normally don't need it aside from weddings, court dates, and funerals, the three obligations I hate most in that order, haha!

    • @ssunfish
      @ssunfish Před rokem

      Your comment struck me. I remember the backlash in the early'90's on hollow grind. I think some people are jaded with knives, not you, but some people trying to amp their knife excitement by going radical or rogue by going counter to mainstream thinking. There are actually large chopper fixed blades that are hollow ground. It's more complex of a question than the basic method of applying bevels. Mostly people search for ever better slicing and cutting over everything else.

    I've had the P2 for about a week now. Its my first spyderco knife. I've always carried, but its usually a low end buck , or Kershaw.
    I've recently started moving to the $100. 00 - 200.00 range. Benchmade, Kershaw, and now Spyderco kinives.
    I really like the P2 ergonomics. I like the blade and handle size , and the options for thumb placement, is excellent.
    The only complaint i have , is it's hard to get out of my pocket, which could be a deal breaker. But , it arrived blade down , which makes for faster opening once its out of my pocket. I dont know if they goofed , when they assembled mine , or that's standard assembly.
    If its standard, spyderco should rethink the clip placement, if most people are having to change it when they get their P2.
    Ive noticed that in almost ever single video , the clips are blade up , where that would probably make it easier to get out of my pocket.
    I hope that will be the case , because i really like the knife.

    Thanks for talking about the Native Chief, I bought one recently and it's an underrated knife. Go look up the Benchmade AFCK, that is what the Native Chief is, to me, in 2023 - a modern AFCK that's even stronger, better designed and more readily available.
    Why do I think it is underrated? The lockback isn't flicky or drop shut smooth. The general trend is to have flicky, fidgety knives, but that is actually counter to the purpose of a knife. They're not fidget spinners, they're tools, thus it is a ridiculous criteria to judge a knife based on how flicky and fidgety it is.
    The Native Chief is none of that. It is a real knife, and it'll cut, slice, stab, scrape and carve like a real knife.

    It's a video discussing the flagship model that every other model addresses issues from. Like saying PM 2 is a basic knife with improvement variants, but PM 2 is a stand alone design to address the guys wanting something over the Military. Kind of getting into minutiae for no real question. You might know what you're doing and choose based on your needs, otherwise you're just going by looks and feel when you check it out in hand at a brick and mortar.
    I have been hearing about Manix and Manix XL. . It's a shame Manix lock back can't be had. Most thing that people don't choose PM 2 first is because the handle is blocky while bring complex instead of open concept. (There's too little open concept handles).
    Because of the straight part of the cutting edge and the handle feel I like the straight spine stretch II over PM 2, the lock back is just pure icing on the cake. Although it's wee heavier than Stretch 2 XL, it is a better knife and I'll be interested to see how the Stretch 2 XL feels in G-10 when the Cruwear version drops.

    All good knives, but for me, there’s just no substitute for the real-deal PM2.
    There’s just something perfected about the way the look, feel and function of it work together that keeps me coming back.

    Spyderco made the para3 because the PM2 is their flagship model(or one of them depending on who you talk to). They wanted to have something that looks and functions like a PM2. They did that because they realized that some people want a knife to have a sub-3" blade. Also, there are some cities/states that you find that size is the legal limit. I know I'm going to have to carry my para3 when I go to Virginia and drive through Maryland this summer because, from my understanding, my full size Grip and Manix 2 aren't legal.

    I totally agree with the Manix 2. I've got the basic G10 with S30V and the ball bearing lock. I think I actually prefer that to any of my PM2s. I also have a standard Native Chief. Great knife. I tested it on some thick cardboard and it breezed through them like they were just sheets of paper. I also have an Amalgam. Great knife. In fact, I've got it right here on the table as I'm typing this. For regular EDC, I think a Native 5 or a Para 3 would do just fine. I also love my Mantra 3. I'm not so fond of my Sliverax though. the curve of whole knife bothers me. Having said all that, the first Spyderco in my collection that I would pick over the Paramilitary 2 would be my Shaman. I just absolutely love that knife. It's my favorite folding knife in fact. Something about the size, ergonomics and even aesthetics just makes it stand head and shoulders above any other Spyderco in my collection.

    I'm a bit of a Spyderco fanboy, yet I don't like the PM2... I'm surprised you didn't mention the Stretch 2 which is basically a cheaper, slicier version with a lockback. I think the Native line is definitely the superior line and the action on the Native Chief is just insanely smooth, the lock is really light

      TOTALLY! I was like" didn't he ever hear of straight spine stretch II? Not only lockback but the last part of the edge to the heel of the blade offers straight line to go with the belly instead of bring all belly, plus Straight Spine Stretch 2 feels really good in hand!

    Alternatives to the PM2-----great choices...IF you're not planning to carry the knife in public. Since these knoves all have blades longer than 3". making them illegal to be carried in public....'
    The people making these laws don't really think things through. The same people who limit rounds in pistol magazines in a few states. ...if a derranged person is intent on doing nother people harm ...limiting folding knive blade length to 3" or less won't stop them.. nor would limiting gun magazine round count to 10...the job will still get done.
    I digress...heh...they should bring back the GB2....don't know why companies take popular kives off hte market that were selling well eg. Zt801 Ti...

    Good video that makes a lot of sense. I’ve had a PM2 since they first came out, still have a regular blk/silver and Jade/DLC/M4. The Native Chief is really underrated, great knife. I don’t play with my knives so could careless about drop shut action. A back lock is the best overall option for a user. I have a Sage 1 (best one) and a Native. My big hand does not fit well behind choil especially on Native. I hate knives that force me to use the choil. They are still useable behind choil but barely: Having the choil cutout in blade like FF designs etc leaves more handle room.
    I still have at least 20 Spydercos but I’m hesitant to buy a ‘regular’ version of a Spyderco due to all their stupid sprint/exclusives on the same 15-20 knives. People chase around high end steel to open boxes with and I’m concerned about resale value. I don’t think the constant sprints is good for the knife community. I look at other brands more now. About half the money in Chinese products goes back to US in designs, distribution, marketing etc
