Many people have asked me over the years about how to improve eyesight without glasses, but I have refrained from commenting as this is a pretty loaded topic. To prepare for this video, I have read multiple books on eye training and active focus theories such as endmyopia, all in an effort to give a more detailed explanation of what these "myopia cure" theories suggest and teach. Unfortunately, many of the theories such as the Bates Method are outdated and carry little scientific support.
Eyesight is extremely complex and involves much more coordination between the eyes and the brain than many sources lead people to believe. I urge anyone to read and investigate these theories with some level of skepticism and to always consult your local eye care provider regarding all matters pertaining to your eye health.

No eye exercise but I saw my ophthalmologist yesterday and after 3 months of working from home due to Covid & not wearing my contacts at all, my vision improved enough to need new contacts & new glasses! • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  Před 4 lety +858

There are some studies that do indicate glasses/contacts may contribute to needing stronger glasses and that is why there is so much study in myopia control right now. However, we also see many people who develop worsening nearsightedness even without EVER wearing glasses. So while it may play a role - it is likely a smaller role and certainly not the only cause. I personal feel lifestyle factors and genetics play a much larger role. I hope to have some more videos on this topic soon. Thanks for watching!

I fully respect eye doctors and the work they do. I am a middle aged woman. On a number of occasions over the years, I was certain that I needed reading glasses as I was holding books further and further away. On each occasion I have used simple eye exercises, taking about 5 minutes a day for a week or so and my reading vision returns. I do them periodically for maintenance. I have had numerous visits with the opticians. They don't know that I do these exercises, but they tell me that whatever I am doing to keep doing it. I don't wear any glasses at all and never had a prescription for one.
My brother is over 60 years old and has been wearing reading glasses for a few years. He told me last week that he hasn't needed his glasses for the last two years, as, to my surprise, he had been doing simple eye exercises in the morning while lying in bed.

Does anyone else feel ashamed to wear glasses or eye contacts at such a young age? I definitely do since my family always I’m “blind” or at least every time we go to the eye doctor. I do admit that I spent majority of my life on screens at least when I was 7-14 (still 14 but trying to take better care of my eyes). But I can’t help having this thought in my head how my family never really payed attention to me or got me into extra curricular activities to avoid these type of things...so I really don’t see why I should be completely blamed. Especially when I was ignored and abused as a young child so I would mainly spend time on my phone. Sorry for the rant I’m just really worried right now because I don’t want to go actually blind at a young age like my 20’s or 40’s, I get really close to mental breakdowns just thinking about it. @@natlie7994 My left eye is not very good at all, in fact I am not able to do what I always wanted to do which was to be a commercial pilot and up to maybe the last year or so I felt ashamed and a waste of space but you have to look at life with more than one perspective and look at what you CAN do to make your life better. Much like yourself I spend a lot of time staring at a screen - there is no scientific proof that screens make your eyesight worse, however if you stare too long you can get dry eyes and feel perhaps dizzy and get eye strain. The best way to deal with this is to take regular breaks from the screen and make sure that during the day you utilize your ability to look at things close and far away from you to ensure you keep your eyes strong and healthy. screens make your eyes lazy and you don't really have to look far or focus much. it's basically like staring at a fancy wall.
But to answer your initial question, No, I don't feel ashamed, I have learnt to accept it and look at the things I CAN do and to be proud of what I do. So keep your head up.

@@hardyharent1047 I have lens induced Myopia and lens induced astigmatism.
If they're not lens induced and due to some diseases or your genetics, then it's not fixable.
I've been working on improving Myopia first.
Here were my numbers before I started.
      Left -3.25 SPH 1.00 CYL
      Right - 4.25SPH 0.75 CYL
      Right now they are
2.5SPH left and 3.25 SPH right. Same CYL (although I haven't measured to be fair, I won't be surprised if they've also dropped by 0.25 or so). I started roughly 4-5 months ago. Although the bulk of the improvement has happened after switching my glasses which has been around 2 month ago. I've had two changes firstly of a 0.5 diopter reduction in both spheres and then of a 0.25 and 0.5 reduction on left and right respectively.
And, I will say that I'm very young right now and my eyes have been extremely good before I got glasses so this rate of improvement isn't possible for most I'd assume. Moreover I've only had glasses for around 7 years. And, all that while I've had the instinct to avoid wearing glasses whenever possible because I assumed they were bad for the eyes (that was a good bet :))
Go with what Mr Steiner says of around 0.25 reduction every 2-3 months or so. Although you can start with a 0.5 reduction for the first time because you have over prescribed glasses so the actual reduction there is only 0.25 or so.
And of course, active focus is key. That's all I did, Reduce the power of glasses, be outside more and do active focus outside.
At my current rate I'm aiming to be free of glasses by the time I'm 19 in roughly 1.5 years. The last diopter does take a serious amount of effort to go away or so I've heard.
Also, NEVER go monkey mode and reduce things by one diopter or so. And never touch two different planes at the same time, like Cylinder values (astigmatism) and Spherical values (Myopia).
Your eyes are very amazing but they're not that amazing that they can change that rapidly in multiple aspects. Don't risk destroying them more. Specially if you're older.
Also another tip, buy glasses in bulk from Zenni, if you don't mind looking dumb, you can get ones for 10 bucks a piece. Although the decent looking ones will cost you about £15-20. That's still years cheaper than whatever scam goes on in optical stores. Also, always go for Anti reflective/glare coating. You don't want to put more strain on your eyes whilst you're messing them up by continuously changing your glasses.
And obviously I probably don't need to say this, but stop using devices a lot. 4-5 hours is more than enough. And take breaks every hour or so for 5-10 mins and look at something outside your house to restore the distance vision and relax the ciliary muscle.
And please don't ask me 'how to fix my eyes' as I've seen many... Idiots asking in these comments even though Jake has said everything that needs to be said, that's it. There's no magic. You just have to:
      -get new glasses
-stop destroying your eyes using devices or books.
-active focus (on something in the distance)

The body adapts to what you give it. If you give it close up books a lot, it will adapt to reading close up. You give it glasses and it adapts to the glasses. Active focus isn't only about loosening the ciliary muscles of the eyes as you've said. The reason the eyedrops don't give a myopic person clear vision instantly is because the eye is still in the elongated shape it has changed to. It takes time, but eventually you can get the eyes back to 20/20 with the proper stimulus. simple.

I've been using Active Focusing for a year and shokingly, within that year, my vision somehow became better. Active focusing became a habit for me and at December 2019, I got my eye doctor to check on me and he himself became shock also because my 20/400 became 20/50. And take note, I got my glasses since I was 12 and now, I'm 17.
So for me, this method suits me and works 100%, though it's a slow process but as long as it's making my myopia disappear then so be it...

Hi, I really hope that you will read this. Yes, I am experiencing improved vision exactly from Endmyopia practices. I managed to reduce my diopters by 1.5 - from -4.25 to -2.5-2.75 at the moment. I think I have a little different understanding of the goal of active focus. It's idea is not to strengthen any muscles. It's idea is to provide a stimulus for the eyes to shorten. The same way as focusing for long time up close is providing stimulus for the eyes to get "longer", actively focusing far away should be providing reverse stimulus for the eyes to shorten. So the theory behind the practice is that you improve your vision by shortening the Axial length and therefore bringing the natural focal point of the internal lens closer to the retina when looking at larger distances.
Disclaimer: I am by no means a professional. I just wanted to share my understanding of the principle and my experience.

You might want to check out some of my videos - but as I have an awful lot I might hunt some out and post the most relevent links here. Also I didn't realise the different cycloplegic agents worked a little differently as I have had to cycloplegic tests where I actually became shortsighted in the second one! Can't remember what it was called - I think something with a "Z" but it was like being hit with a sack of flour - very strange. Every morning I moved my eyes 50x up-down, 50x left right, 25 diagonal to every diagonal, 10 rolling to both sides. And mostly helped me trying to go out and use my eyes. I think my eyes were just fatigued or weak from watching pc screen too much. After reading so many comments I also felt like I should share what I observed being a myopic person. I got specs of -1 D power at the age of 15 and like anybody else I hated wearing glasses and it's been 4 years since then, my right eye number is still -1 D and my left eye number increased to -1.5D( and that because of increased screen time in covid) and I only used my glasses while studying or focusing on board and rest of the time I use to see things without glasses. And my friend who got glasses previous year with -1D power his number gradually increased from -1D to -3.5D in both his eyes within one year even though he workout and is very health conscious.
So I think wearing glasses all the time just worsens your eyesight. Just take a break and relax your eyes by removing your glasses for sometime, go out for a walk and eat good.
I know my comment doesn't help in anyway in improving the vision but it'll surely help you by not further worsening your vision.

I was born with perfect vision without glasses until age of 18 years old, this is the age when I started to become a nerd, reading everyday for more than 10 hours a day without rest, this has caused my vision to become weak slowly and gradually. I didn't believe I needed glasses until I started to have difficulty seeing faces of people sitting few feet away across from me. My first glasses prescription was very strong about 2 diopter. The first time I started wearing them I felt dizzy because they distorted the true image I used to normally see with my two eyes, all I could see is a distorted image , as I move my head the image size and shape kept changing, it didn't feel normal and I kept feeling too much eye strain as if the glasses were doing something to my eye muscles. My optometrist recommended that I wear the glasses all the time to reduce eye strain and improve my vision. After wearing glasses for only 3 months, the distortion started to disappear however my vision started to get worst, it changed from 2 diopter to 4.75 diopter in just under 3 month. My near vision got worst and I couldn't understand how I could have myopia and suffer from seeing things very close, I couldn't read a book without wearing my glasses and I can't see my face in the mirror without wearing glasses. This was not an issue for me prior to wearing glasses as my near vision was perfect, and only had problems seeing things far away. I truly believe the glasses has caused my vision to get worst. I experimented a little, took my glasses off for six month however I didn't do any eye exercises then I went to optimist to see if there was any improvement. My prescription was reduced from 4.75 to 4. Not much of an improvement but definitely some improvement to prove to me that glasses can damage vision because only by removing them has caused my vision to improve a little. Going back to university has forced me to wear glasses again, and now my eyes are back again to 4.75 and getting more worst. Can someone suggest to me some eye exercises that they personally tried and has helped them because the internet is full of garbage exercises and I don't know which one to trust. Thanks in advance

Active focus works ( and vision therapy in general), as you mentioned, for people who had a bad habit of tensing their eyes and muscles too much. Less than two weeks ago, I got my newly prescribed glasses on -3.25 with astigmatism -.5 in one eye. But I am driving a Tesla and my overcorrected glasses make it impossible to read the Tesla touchscreen panel. I am over 45 years old, by the way, and more sensitive to over-corrected glasses than younger folks. Yes, I got 20/20 or even 20/15 vision from the new glasses during bright daylight, but I don't need it. I can read number plates just fine on 20/40 vision with my older -2.25 glasses.
With active focus (relaxing eye muscle and visual cortex), indeed, I can read number plates further away on 20/30 or even 20/20 vision with my older glasses in bright daylight.
That right there is at least 1 diopter improvement in less than 2 weeks. But, I heard that this is a typical result caused by a combination of over-corrected prescription (I believe my true diopter now is much lower than -2.75), improved lighting situations, and active focus (a.k.a bad eye strain habit reduction.)
Now, I can read the Tesla touch screen panel just fine and can drive legally with my older -2.25 glasses.
Can I reduce it 1 diopter further in the next two weeks?
Certainly not. I agree as you explained in the video, that it works only in certain cases and situations. Now my situation has changed and no big improvement is possible anymore.
Beware of some claims out there that clear flashes are the same as active focus. Clear flashes, as the name suggests, maintain clarity at random time for a very short period (a.k.a flashes.) Active focus maintains clarity on command (not random) and for as long as you want.

The amount you under-correct by is also important. too much blur is counter productive. Question: Can exercising your eye with focus adjustment help improve eyesight? If eye muscles become weaker the more you adjust to seeing things up close, then couldn't doing the opposite help "reverse" near sightedness a way? The common focus exercise is shifting focus from things that are up close to far away multiple times. Any thoughts on the effectiveness of this?

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  Před 3 lety +48

It is possible to train the coordination between the focusing muscles(ciliary body and extra-ocular muscles) and you can even train your eyes to improve your accommodative (focus) function. But this is dependent on the flexibility of the crystalline lens inside the eye, if a person is young, then it is more likely to improve your accommodative function, after the age of 40- this tends to become more difficult due to age related lens changes. However, people cant really learn to reverse your accommodative function, you can relax your ciliary body to a point, but even at it's maximum relaxation point- this may not reverse myopia.

    You are completely correct.
Simply being in our "nose on book", society, our normal eyes (all of them) change their refractive state downward at a rate of -0.5 diopters per year.
If you want to prevent this, you can (when still confirming 20/50, on your Snellen) wear a +2.5 Diopter plus lens, for all close work.
    This is effective.
That is how I got my refraction to change by 1 diopters, getting to +0.5 Diopters, and confirmed 20/20. This is obviously science, and out of scope for Optometry, sad to say.
This is of course how you got down to -4 Diopters.

Glasses do make your myopia worse. It conditions your eyeballs to elongate and stay that way according to the requirements of your glasses. Tell me, would you wear glasses meant for you to see far distances clearly while reading a book that's about a foot from your eyes? It doesn't make sense biologically.
You wouldn't understand yet cuz you got them recently, so that's okay. I'm 16 and have been wearing glasses since I was 8. My first prescription was -0.5. I was told to always wear glasses at every moment except sleeping. I rebelled and avoided them whenever I could, but still had to wear them cuz my parents believed my optician and were strict. This caused my prescription to increase to -1.5 d over a span of 4 years. That was in 2017. Now ever since I stopped wearing glasses except when I really need them, my prescription has remained the same for 3 years. In fact, I'd say it is better since I figured out active focus. This isn't a a conspiracy theory. It is fact which people refuse to accept since they want an easy solution that helps them instantly, but destroys them in the long run.

I can see 20/20 in this pair now. In two weeks I'm lowering again to a -5.00 and -4.50. If I'm doing nearwork I'm keeping my glasses off and if I'm using the computer for work I'm wearing differentials.
I understand that they're the "specialists" but all that seemed to be happening to me was that I was becoming more and more myopic with an increased risk for eye issues like retinal detachment.
If they're going to argue it's totally safe and reasonable for me to take a laser to my eye (Lasik) that doesn't even resolve the root of my myopia I fail to see the harm in at least trying the reduced lens method and some eye relaxation and focusing techniques and exercises.
I reached out to my optometrist during the pandemic about this before I started and he actually told me that if what I have is lens induced myopia from wearing my distance correction while doing close up work for years it is completely theoretically possible for me to reverse the damage.
He even offered to prescribe me a pair of differentials for the computer.
So, I wouldn't call it anything to write home about yet but if I make it into the -3.00s with a test from optometrist I will post my old script with my new script for people to see.
So far, something positive does seem to be occurring and honestly, I'm the type of person who would rather explore the option for themselves than write it off at someone else's urging.

hi what are differentials? I cant see even at arms length at my pc screen, right -5.5 and left -4.5, so can i just buy a pair of reduced diopter say -4.5 for both eyes?

I was diagnosed with amblyopia in 1966, when I was 4 years old. I had glasses and my mom had to tape a telfa pad over my good (left) eye for a year. I remember fighting her with the patch and drops…so thankful she stuck with the plan. My right eye is still much weaker than my left eye, but I manage with contacts and glasses.

Yes, vision therapy worked wonders for me in reversing a death spiral of shortsightedness from intense near focus work. I made detail graphs of spherical decline and rebound over time to quantify this. My eye doc offered a program paid for by my company. I used the principles of it to maintain progress after the program. Rather than speculate, give it a try on your own.

You can't expect someone that makes their living off of tests/devices/surgeries to "correct" vision to tell you that something you can do for free on your own is going to work, now, can you? Of course not. I'm surprised your eye doc offered a program, but I guess he probably did profit in some way from it. Still, better to correct it naturally, if you're motivated to keep up with it, than to need various devices for the rest of your life. Good job!

Excellent video, Dr. Allen! Very interesting to hear your professional opinion on the topic and you clearly did your homework and covered most of it. The only thing I missed is potential explanations why some people seem to have had some (limited) success with these methods. I have some theories why that might be, namely blur adaptation and that "active focus" like exercises might (temporarily) extend your depth of focus through pupil constriction caused by accommodation. Obviously, there wouldn't be any actual myopia reduction but I find it plausible that you can train your brain to sort of make the most out of your vision and see better with a weaker lens. Would love to hear your opinion on this question!

trust me he didnt do as much reseach as he should . his defintion of active focus is totally wrong . active focus is about introducing a very small amount of blur aka myopic defocus using two reduced lenses one for close up and one for distance to challenge your eyes in a smooth way as a habit to reverse myopia . this is a very big topic you should check endmyopia.org

I'm aware of that site and a couple of others. But there's zero proof that anyone has actually (partially or fully) reversed their myopia in terms of axial length. If these methods actually worked, someone would have proof by now, don't you think?
I'm not going to be convinced or even impressed by reports of some (alleged) diopter reduction. If you can't reduce the axial length of your eyeballs (which is what would have to happen to reverse myopia) the whole thing is worthless. Except maybe if it helps with presbyopia, but I don't know if it can.

My mom went from near sightedness to far sightedness. She can't see up close but far away. When she was young it was the opposite. And she can't wear her old glasses. She has a theory about using zertec for 2 yrs. But thats a goofy theory. In those 2 yrs she also refused to wear her glasses. Changing her prescription drastically

As for me, when I was young, everytime I got new glasses, they would be so strong that I couldn't walk correctly. I do believe it permanently damaged me. We always went to a store to get my eyes checked. It was recommended by my school when I was in 1st grade to get glasses. In all honesty. I dont think my prescription would be so damn strong as an adult if it weren't for the eye doctor I went to. I can only focus on the smallest letters about 7 inches from my nose.

I have an adult friend who had needed glasses her whole life and had a strong prescription. She did one of these programs (see clearly method, if memory serves) very diligently for two years. Her prescription got lighter and lighter every few months. She had to change glasses like 6 times. Finally she got her eyes down to like 20/30 or better and didn't need glasses any more. She still doesn't need glasses. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it, personally, because I saw the exercises and they seemed like nonsense. All doctors (and wikipedia) agree that it's nonsense, but I watched it happen. It's not quackery. After seeing that I can't believe doctors still don't believe it. They must have seen cases like this. I guess there just aren't that many people with enough diligence to really do those programs.

I appreciate your honesty in being more realistic about these topics that people want to believe. Ive been postponing my vision check up with a eye doctor but realize the importance of it as I am getting severe eye fatigue after minor tasks. I would hate to have to wear glasses but I guess that's better than having to see blurry after a little work on my computer.

I think you need to do some more thinking…if you were going to build a camera, would you arrange to bend the crystal lens or would you simply change the focal distance by moving the receiving plate backwards and forwards. Also, in bates’ book, he did experiments with rabbits where he did cut the muscles and applied electricity and then resewed the muscle back and he was able to stop accomodation and then bring it back. So, please open your eyes and go back to the drawing board.

I'll never forget the last time I went to the doctor for a routine check-up. When I left I felt really bad and depressed because of a single comment made by the old woman who was the optometrist there. Usually that optometrist makes a series of exams and measurements and gives that report to the doctor for the actual appointment. And actually I didn't feel anything was particularly wrong with my eyes but she must have been a sadist because she said in a very theatrical tone "ohh dear this looks bad!". She didn't even say why, she just threw that at me and left me pale with dread. I felt so tormented. And the funny thing is the doctor didn't even seem worried about anything during the appointment but in truth that sadistic optometrist had actually looked into my eyes with some equipment so I don't know what the hell she saw there that was "so bad" or if the doctor was made aware of it. But that single remark took hold of me and I became so depressed and I never got any appointment since (and that was years ago!) for fear of hearing something terrible.
I got so depressed and I still live in fear, I mean what did she even mean?? I have come across some pretty callous sadistic health professionals but that old bat took the cake and really put this dark cloud over me that never went away, and I got a sort of phobia of doctor's appointments in general and check-ups. I haven't been to any doctor in years even though I know I should, but the fear of hearing bad news is so paralysing I just don't. It's extraordinary how a single remark made by an evil btch can have such a huge lasting negative impact.
I mean the fact she observed my eyes through equipment made it impossible for me to just shrug it off and move on. Later I kicked myself that I made no further questions but the moment she said that I felt this terror that I couldn't focus on anything else and was kind of in shock. I don't even know if my eyesight got worse over the years because that remark she made sank in and created this subconscious beliefe that there is something terribly wrong with my eyes.
