not sure if folks saw this, but at 12:30 or so curtis switches from right hand to left hand planing. this dude don't need to flip the job over in the vice, he just switches hands and serves it forth! -adam of oakland, ca, USA
If you work by hand only long enough (or mostly by hand), you'll eventually be planing pushing or pulling with both hands (it's just easier and faster) and you'll be sawing with both hands. It's easier to just use both. Once you've mastered one, using your weak hand is a lot less difficult to learn than you'd think, and it makes it so that you can pretty much work indefinitely vs. running out of steam doing all of the work with one dominant hand or arm. .
curtis, if you are going to carve this hunk of wood, every square inch of both sides, by the time you are done wth it, what is the big deal with getting it nice and flat and straight? btw, i can hear the plane singing---sign of sharp!
Hello 👋 where do you get your seat blanks from , I drove over 200 miles trying to find a place that sells 6/4 boards and the wide width needed and I'm not having any luck , as for northeastern pine it's a big no one has here in Iowa, Illinois , Wisconsin. I was thinking of maybe Basswood I heard it's easy to carve and it light weight. All the places I've talked to looked completely shocked when I bring up the width of the boards I need , is the place you get your blanks from ship? and if so could you please pass on the info to me please 🙏
Found your channel recently and subed . I can hardly find my house , here in Ontario Canada due to so much snow , and have been watching your vids and want to say Thanks for sharing your knowledge ! I have started collecting old hand tools to restore and use . A question I have , when a small kiln , such as your main one is built , is it completely sealed during drying when light is on , or where does the moisture escape to . If the moisture stays in the box how does this dry the wood . Sorry if its a stupid question , I'm just a little confused how it works as I'd like to build one . Great shop , awesome work , thanks for your time , Cyril
Cyril, I'm sure that the moisture needs to escape. I don't know any scientific information on this so I just have a few holes on top of the box for moisture and the doors are leaky for air to enter.
Curtis where do you find the Eastern White Pine you use for the chair seats? I live around Houston Texas and there's much if any log yards around here.
Curtis, I purchased plans for the chair. For the seat, is the seat blank dry or green wood? Thanks. I just got done with my shaving horse and have been practicing with draw knife.

Speaking as a fellow southpaw, it's the bi-product of years of adaptation to a right hander's world. And nice observation.

Thanks Curtis , if it works for you , that's good enough for me !
does the pine have to be green? or air dried? is kiln dried okay if it is pine? thanks so much for these great videos

Gene, it's always hard to find. Go to Elia Bizzarri's web site and he should have a list of resources,
Thanks, Curtis. This web site has a treasure chest of ideas!

The seat is air dried.
Would basswood work for the seat?
Yes, basswood will work fine for the seat.
