  • Curtis demonstrates how to split out the crest rail for the Democratic Chair, how to shape it into the octagonal form, and how to bend it without a steam box. He also shows how to make a simple drying kiln out of inexpensive materials.

For a small drying box like you show, what wattage bulb is enough? I see them available from 25wt to 250wt. You’re a master with that draw knife, thank you for the instruction.

"Line up the center and pull it around"
If you are bending a piece that was cut oversize for leverage, you wouldn't have to mark the center of the stick. just tuck one end under the wedge to a mark on the bending form, bend the stick, and transfer center mark (center mark) on the bending form to the stick.

Very true. I was going to do that when I realized that my peg holes were too far apart for that to work. I guess I could have made another form but figured it wasn't worth it.

Is grain orientation considered when you put it in the bending form?

Good point. I forgot to mention anything about that. You can bend it either way (radially or tangentially) and it will work. For the best joint at the post it should be bent with the radial face on the front and back of the bend.

why couldn't you use a section of gutter to pour boiling water into for bending the crest rail?

doing this in doors in air conditioned setting, how long do you think you have to complete the project rom the first riving as far as drying is concerned? what i mean is, im worried that if i rive out the parts then take my time building the chair, the parts will dry too much and wont work as well, would you say that once the wood is rived you need to really get it done in a certain time period? this is an amazing project thank you for sharing it with the world

also how long do the parts need to be in the kiln for roughly?
