@@montanus777 Let me get this straight. Trump wants part of the troops in Poland. To you that means Germany can pull troops from Poland, bring them home, and then leave troops that Trump stationed in Poland. Umm... you ARE aware of what Trump did in Syria? At the beginning of the wars when Germany stood up and said no to their public. The German government quietly reshuffled NATO deployments adding additional troops to cover US forces that would pull out of NATO deployments to go to Iraq. The German government even renewed contracts with the American forces for bases that had been part of the Gramm Rudmann cuts from the 1990s. So publicly the German government can deny they were involved but behind the scenes they have facilitated the ongoing conflicts.
Germans won’t fight. They pay the Taliban to leave them alone and won’t attack them in their AO’s, then say they have no insurgent activity. Not exactly holding up their obligations as an ally.

They want us to continue to provide their national defense, and enjoy the financial surplus of not having to defend themselves, all while they get in bed with the enemy. As to deserting NATO, or Germany, the US is just moving troops for the defense of Europe further East to Poland. A country that is not afraid to fight and is well aware of the threats to Europe.
Hugo Stiglitz - With respect... that is exactly what Hitler wanted so he would have less opposition to his policies of aggression. I know many would say the USA is the bully, especially given our current president, I politely disagree. The goal of the troops in Europe is for stability. If a bully decides to pick a fight with a little country, like Russia recently did with Finland buying up islands and putting Russian military bases on them, you kind of want a friendly big brother to walk up to you on that “playground” and say “Hi Finland, everything ok here?”

It is the punishment for the misbehavior of a state not as seen as a friend, partner and one of the most loyal decade long allies but as a vassal state. And it is revenge on the actual head of our government for not having kowtowed. It is what it is meant to be - an insult.

Is the move to have NATO members increase their contribution also come with a catalog of defense products they can buy from American Defense companies?
That's the implied idea. Trump mostly wants NATO buying more US hardware. He doesn't actually care about our overall military spending but rather about orders from US defense contractors. That military client state thing is why as a Canadian, I favour the building the Swedish designed Gripen locally over the F-35. It does everything we need, is better suited to our northern wilderness, costs less and the Swedes are happy to transfer the tech and let us control our own manufacturing. We don't force project except as part of international coalitions so stealth is less useful than supercruising for us (we've got big areas to patrol). Reaching a Russian bomber quickly trumps sneaking up on it while needing in flight refueling. If the US had been willing to sell the F-22 a few decades ago, a few of those would have been great for the Arctic patrols (same way they get used in Alaska) but we mostly need a multi-role workhorse for NATO and UN missions.
@@paranoidrodent You'd also assume given we fly joint west coast defense operations in any conflict.. that'd they wouldn't have screwed us over trying to sell us a plane we can't use to protect their coastlines. American corporations are awful, shame they're taking over our economy.
@@azarinevil Well, the shortlist of bids was released in the past few days. F-35, Super Hornet and Gripen. Boeing would have to offer a hell of a deal on the Super Hornet to avoid the bad blood over forcing Bombardier into Airbus' arms a few years ago. No aerospace company has done as much to destroy our local aerospace industry in ages. Lockheed Martin has good relationships but the F-35 program has been a financial boondoggle. Saab is offering local manufacturing and tech transfer (which would boost up the aerospace industry).
All this time we were afraid of a Manchurian Candidate, but now we've got a Muscovite Incumbent and his little helpers in the senate, the DOJ, and the Supreme Corp.
There is another element I find hugely distasteful about this whole thing. The people of Landstuhl have treated the US military will nothing but respect, welcomed every single american family flying in on a red eye from the US to come and visit their injured son or daughter from the US military. Without Landstuhl, the US military casualty figures from Iraq and the Stan would be far far higher. And this, it is a slap in their faces. It disrespects all of them from Landstuhl, to Rammstein, to Rota in Spain, Dover in the UK, etc... It also disrespects all the other NATO countries who are seeing that the US (their "ally") will try hold them hostage. This move will not create more more troops in Germany, not in any short term. But it will make the US's next adventure far far lonelier as the rest of NATO chooses not to aid the US unless Article 5 compels them to. November had better see an new person in charge, or the US is going to carry on losing allies in a time it really can't afford to.
No Nato nation is under any threat of invasion nor have they ever been since the end of the cold war 30 years ago... the Nato in 2020 in completely obsolete since the only countries who act as aggressors on a global stage are Nato Members and Russia... none of which have the means nor interesst in invading each other
I was hoping this would be the reaction to Trump’s tweet about delaying the election this morning. Also, on a personal note, the take that “he doesn’t have the power to do this” feels naive. Maybe that’s just me though.
You're completely correct - this isn't the time to be singing "Go home, Ami Ami go home!" or "If you love your Uncle Sam, bring'em home...". America is not demilitarizing, we're just re-organizing troop deployment as an effort to punish foreign diplomats. What may bite America in the ass in the future is whether or not this act provides serious evidence to those in Europe who want a federated military force, the creation of which would likely mean the end of US Forces in Europe. Foreign trust in the U.S as a mediating and protective force by European Powers is rapidly deteriorating, and you're seeing the beginnings of that public deterioration (the private having already begun years ago) with the announcement of the Lublin Triangle the beginning of this week.

But i guess if you just move them across the belgian border it doesnt make a difference anyway.
Also how do they imagine german adventurism, we can not go to war. We are literally not allowed to. German troops are only deployed to "war like scenarios" and mostly build field hospitals and other infrastructure.

german here: the best thing is, that the majority of the germans (not the politicians though) *want* your troops to go. our slogan is "ami go home". :)
@G S trump wants a part of the troops to go to poland, which means that we can withdraw our troops from poland. so, in the end we'll be fine. :)
G S when in reality, it is NATO who’s expanding East
@G S additionally we _will_ increase our military spendings anyways. but we'll do that until 2024 (as is agreed upon in the treaties), not during trump's first term - *that's* what pisses him off (and the fact, that we're sceptical about buying your planes).
@@montanus777 Let me get this straight. Trump wants part of the troops in Poland. To you that means Germany can pull troops from Poland, bring them home, and then leave troops that Trump stationed in Poland. Umm... you ARE aware of what Trump did in Syria? You are aware of what Trump did to the Kurds, right? You are aware he pulled out our troops and allowed Turkey and Russia to literally take over our bases in that region, right? About Germany participating in any further "Adventures", I doubt that.We said no to Iraq and can plainly see the Afghan debacle.Openly supporting german participation in Ami Wars would be political suicide.
I can think of a few people here in Germany whom I could totally see choosing that as their hill to die on, but still... yeah.

A bunch of milquetoast Western Europeans? The US has kept Germany from speaking Russian for 70 years. Now they want to bite the hand that feeds. They want us to continue to provide their national defense, and enjoy the financial surplus of not having to defend themselves, all while they get in bed with the enemy. As to deserting NATO, or Germany, the US is just moving troops for the defense of Europe further East to Poland. A country that is not afraid to fight and is well aware of the threats to Europe.

defund military world wide
@G S Are you simply posting your nonsense under every comment now?
Hugo Stiglitz - With respect... that is exactly what Hitler wanted so he would have less opposition to his policies of aggression. I agree with your sentiment, our (all) militaries are WAY too well funded, too strong, too present... reduction is logical. Not defunding. Bluntly stated there are bullies in the world. The world is their playground. Bully’s don’t pick on the big kids, they pick on the little ones on the playground. Those soldiers in Germany help keep the bullies away.

I think ive tweeted this, but as far as im concerned it seemed to me as if the bases in germany are something that gave the americans more benefits than the germans. The entire point of these bases is that you increase your projection radius around the world. Believe me the fact that we dont check rammstein activitys with our constitution annoys quite a few germans. But i guess if you just move them across the belgian border it doesnt make a difference anyway.
Also how do they imagine german adventurism, we can not go to war. We are literally not allowed to. German troops are only deployed to "war like scenarios" and mostly build field hospitals and other infrastructure.
On a side note, it was just announced that Herman Cain passed away from COVID-19.
