Thanks for the video, Chris!
I've done steering head bearings on Japanese bikes, but never a BMW. I don't have a pilot style bearing puller and was a little worried about accidentally welding the bearing race to the steering tube, but your video gave me the confidence I needed. Easy as pie!
P.S. I left the grease on the lower bearing cage when I cut it open. That helped keep the rollers from flying everywhere when it split.
iron maiden is very important when doing BMW repair the right way :)
I have done the mig welder to the race as well. Love these videos
Over 3 years later I still burst out laughing while watching your videos.......they are sooo good.......soo informative.........and unforgettable......roy
+ROY Dean Hi Roy.
+Chris Harris .....having fun with these old motorbikes is often in short supply........so your videos are a breath of fresh air.......
That is nice to hear, thank you.
Congratulacion, i have a r45 of 1979. Tomorrow i wil make the same process. I hope that with this movie will be more easy.
Hi Mr Harris. Thanks for the steering head bearing video. Solved a couple of problems for me. You are so much more detailed and practical than my friggin Clymer Manual. Will be scribbling shit all over that book, including a reference to thy self. I will flick ya some cash when I figure out that patreon shit. In hurry. Wife seems to think she can use porch again and wants the bike gone. Still have fork seal to do. Cheers. Scott J , Brisbane, Australia. 1992 K1100LT

You're welcome! Thanks for your post :)
Tip I just found. Haven't had a chance to see if this is common knowledge or not, forgive if it is. Also, easy to verify in any bearing shop, or better auto/ag parts shops. The BMW boxed steering bearing is $75 - $90 (each). It is exactly the same as a BR37 which should run about $35. Same specs, same qual, same maker (SKS Japan). Just saves the detour through Germany and BMW branded package. Mine is an 83 R100RT calling for BMW Bearings(2) 31 42 7 663 941. A good bearing tech can be a valuable resource.
Yes, good information. Thank you for sharing.
I hope your steering head bearing replacement on your R45 went smoothly.
Step 3 sounds very technical hahah
