I built WEATHERTOP Amon Sûl FROM SCRATCH

In this video I build Weathertop / Amon Sûl built from scratch using XPS foam, for the table top skirmish game Middle Earth Strategy Battle game. The location of the classic excerpt from The Lord of the rings where Frodo is stabbed by the head Nazgul, the Witch King of Angmar with a Morgul blade. But more than that Weathertop has a deeper significance in MiddleEarth ...
This project was a collaboration with the CZcams channel History Of The Ages, who have released a lore video all about the lore surrounding Weathertop to coincide with this video. After watching this video please head over to their channel and watch that video and also subscribe to their awesome channel! Links below:

Excerpt from The Lord of the rings Chapter 11 " A knife in the dark"
" he slowly drew out the chain, and
slipped the Ring on the forefinger of his left hand.
Immediately, though everything else remained as before, dim and dark, the
shapes became terribly clear. He was able to see beneath their black
wrappings. There were five tall figures: two standing on the lip of the dell,
three advancing. In their white faces burned keen and merciless eyes; under
their mantles were long grey robes; upon their grey hairs were helms of
silver; in their haggard hands were swords of steel. Their eyes fell on him
and pierced him, as they rushed towards him. Desperate, he drew his own sword,
and it seemed to him that it flickered red, as if it was a firebrand. Two of
the figures halted. The third was taller than the others: his hair was long
and gleaming and on his helm was a crown. In one hand he held a long sword,
and in the other a knife; both the knife and the hand that held it glowed with
a pale light. He sprang forward and bore down on Frodo.
At that moment Frodo threw himself forward on the ground, and he heard
himself crying aloud: O Elbereth! Gilthoniel! At the same time he struck at
the feet of his enemy. A shrill cry rang out in the night; and he felt a pain
like a dart of poisoned ice pierce his left shoulder. Even as he swooned he
caught, as through a swirling mist, a glimpse of Strider leaping out of the
darkness with a flaming brand of wood in either hand. With a last effort
Frodo, dropping his sword, slipped the Ring from his finger and closed his
right hand tight upon it."

@@AzraelThanatos Great idea :)
Thank God, I have found this Video. If it were 3 hours long, I would have watched it too. It felt good and wanna appreciate your work and indeed you have a wonderful Hobby.
Thank you so much Jahidul !! I'm so glad you enjoyed it :D
This is my favourite of all your builds, and I love them all (almost) equally. Outstanding work, especially on those statues!
Dude... coming from you that is high praise indeed! I love everything you do!!
@@Nat1videos Aw shucks, thanks, man! Well we'll just keep putting stuff out and admiring eachother's work.
@@NorthoftheBorder And or figure out how to do a collaboration some day .....
@@Nat1videos Shyeah! I'm sure we can figure something out, there's a lot of similarities in what we do anyways!
@@NorthoftheBorder A collaboration of you guys would be great. Please consider it. I appreciate you both!!
I remember seeing plans for Weather top on the Last Alliance forum many moons ago. This has brought back many fond memories of my attempt at it.
It's such a fun build to do! Did you ever complete your build?
@@Nat1videos sadly not. Got as far as the basic build. Sealed in PVA. Then left alone to paint another day that never happened. Shame. You can’t get the blueprints anymore as the Last Alliance site was shut years ago I believe.
@@jamesfirth-haydon7381 Sad times :( Maybe you will have to make one from scratch ;)
Yeah man, we’ll done! Killer carving skills.
Thanks so much John! High praise coming from you :) I really appreciate you checking out the build ! Did you see I took a leaf out of your book and went for the split screen ..? Leading the charge as always dude ;)
Glad I found your Channel you combine my 3 favourite things LOTR DND and building
Thank you so much Peter! I really appreciate you checking out my channel :D Do you like Sci Fi? I will be dipping my toe in to Sci fi next week, doing a build for my brother ...
Absolutely Brilliant interpretation of Amon Sùl. I would hope for a companion piece of Amon Hem. You are a Master Builder.
Thank you so much Dan... all I will say is stay tuned 😉🤫
Okay now that is stunning. You skill is amazing
Thank you so much ! And thanks for watching and commenting 😃
Wow!

@@Divine_Chareka That is so cool! Thanks so much, and yes there will be more Lord of the rings builds. I have a few lord of the rings related videos on my channel... a few drawings, a sword handle. Next week is a bit different, i'm doing a sci fi build for my brother
Gorgeous! Makes me want to cook breakfast and get ambushed.
hahaha "Nice crispy bacon!"
Epic, as always :)
Thank you so much Mai!!!
Just came from Reddit, amazing work :D
Thank you so much for coming over to check it out! I really appreciate it :)
You have a very distinct style on your crafting and a soft, noble personality which makes your videos calming. I hope to see your full board when you have enough pieces of terrain. Greetings from mexico
Thank you so much! I have always wanted to visit Mexico, hopefully some day. I hope you and yours have a wonderful new year :)

This is an awesome video mate! Absolutely loved it.
Thanks so much Benji ! We have a youtube collaboration to think about for the future ;)
@@Nat1videos I’m definitely up for that!
@@BenjisHobbies Let's chat soon ;)
Beautiful work, and dang that's big! The expanding foam for the hill was genius, and the statues are dead ringers for the greybeard statues in Sovngarde - maybe Shor's hall for a future project? ;) I also like the way you aged the place with vegetation.
Couple of ideas which might come in handy. Polyfiller isn't exactly an adhesive but it grabs things fairly well when it's wet, so if you drop sand, sawdust or chunks of bark on it it will stick them in place; that saves you some time as you can usually avoid having to go over everything with glue once the filler dries. Sand and sawdust also help it dry faster, and of course if you have time you can always go over that and give yourself more texture.
Second idea I got watching you carve the steps was that it would probably have been much faster - definitely not prettier - to cut the tiers out of foamboard and lay them on top of each other, as well as cutting slots for the walls in them rather than cutting space for the steps into the walls. You don't get the nice uneven stones for free, but it would be easy to shape them this way - actually I'm sure your guest on this weekend's livestream will show you :)
Thanks Karl! And thanks for the tips !! I will have to give some of those a try. I rarely think about the process I just get going and what works works... but I want to have as many techniques at my disposal as possible :D
@@Nat1videos I get you :) Mind you, it is a lot easier to get ideas about a process when you're watching someone else do the hard work XD Great work again sir.
@@Karlmakesstuff I always value your input Karl ! :)
Wow! What a stunning job. You may have become obsessed with completing it, but it was worth every minute of those sleepless nights. Truly a magnificent diorama; comparable to the work of such modelling greats as Mike Wallace
wow thank you so much !
THIS IS STUNNING!!!
Thank you so much Damian :D
And no one else will have one like it. Excellent work.
Thanks so much :D
As a recently renewed MESB fan, having grown up with the Battle Games in Middle Earth magazine, and also an Irish miniature enthusiast. This channel is a revelation to me, I am so happy to see someone with a passion for both Tolkien's work, and the miniature hobby, put out such excellent work.
This channel has given me so much inspiration. I will strive to recreate this to my best abilities, but the groove in which you have placed Amon Sûl, is also prime for other modular pieces that can be placed on it. I can already see the campsite from Fellowship where the Crebain flew overhead, fit in nicely into the little niche. Which could be used for the Warg attack from the Books and the new Quest of the Ringbearer manual.
Thank you again for your tremendous work.
Kind Regards
Tommy
Thanks so much Tommy. Very glad to meet another LOTR and crafting enthusiast ! I literally just got a new set of the Fellowship minis this morning. Cant wait to paint them up ! I hope to keep making content that you enjoy :)
I can relate I often get lost in my crafts especially when carving terrain and hours will pass. It’s one of the greatest ways of taking a break from the real world and just building what you love.
Such a great escape :D
Rewatching this for the 3th time ... still love it !!!
Thank you Tine! More projects coming very soon, I promise :)
With no cons to go to, I needed another creative outlet and recently turned to terrain and dioramas. Even though I'm not a gamer, I love the artistry. You are becoming my favorite because I love all things LOTR! I also appreciate the care with you channel by posting so much information!
Thank you so much Kim! I love making things and I love making videos, so I am so glad that you find the value in the content. It is encouraging to get your feedback! I hope to make more things you like, and don't worry there will be lots more Lord of the rings stuff :)
This is amazing!!!! Just make more LOTR stuff. Legit anything and ill be in here watching. I insta subscribed
Thanks so much mate :D There are more LOTR builds on their way... I do have some other stuff coming up first though. Dipping my toe in to Sci Fi for next weeks build, but will find myself back in middle earth very soon :)
this place has great history and spirituality, superb job sir hope you can do more of these places in Middle Earth, can you please consider making the fallen statue in Ithilien it would be amazing, thank you for the video.
Thank you so much! I would definitely consider making that but I’m finding it hard to find a visual reference ... do you know where I could see some images ?
@@Nat1videos www.councilofelrond.com/imagegallery/crossroads-3/ here from the movie, i loved this scene very much when the find the old statue at the crossroads desecrated with the head falled off and replaced with a mockery and on the ground the head had a crown of flowers.
@@alexanderdegothia I love it! I have added it to my build schedule!!
@@Nat1videos you are a great artist thank you for considering it. czcams.com/video/GRMqVUPX4g8/video.html for a more easy visual reference.
I am pleased with the amount of research (movie/book knowledge) it makes it a pleasure to watch someone delve into the world of Tolkien. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this.
Thank you ! really glad you enjoyed it :)
You out did yourself on this one! Truly an amazing artist.
Looks amazing. I've always liked the idea of changeable builds for flexibility but I often struggled to make the join look seamless.
Thank you so much! Yeah, that is hard... even in this build it is not seamless for sure. I think next time I will see what I can do with clump foliage etc to hide the seams. Thanks for the comment and watching the video :D
Subscribed. There is something soothing about watching you create and listening to you talk. Great stuff - you sir are a cool dude.
Thank you so much Joachim, that is a really nice compliment! And thank you for watching and subscribing :D
This is amazing! You are incredibly talented.
Thank you so much :)
This was an awesome build! If I ever get into BIG terrain pieces like this, I will now contemplate that spray foam method too. Very neat!
Thank you !
Amazing build! Great work :)
Thank you dude! Hope you are well!!
What an epic build! Such a beautiful end result. Makes me want to build an encounter and bring it to my tabletop games.
Gladly you are my DM .... this could be arranged :D
That was a fantastic video and what a absolutely fantastic piece at the end. Just great 😃👍🏼
Thank you so much! This is one of my favourite project for sure :)
Wow!!! You've done such a great job on this project!!
Thank you so much Nathan! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch !! Let me know if you have any ideas for other cool builds you would like to see :)
This is a wonderful piece of terrain. I love the statues! If you 3d printed or cast these statues, I would buy them in a minute!
Thank you so much Isabelle! I wouldn't even know where to begin with the whole 3D printing thing, maybe someone on here will be able to point me in the right direction.. I will make a tutorial on how to carve them after my next build video :)
Wonderful build brother!!! Love all the texture you created in the stone work for the ruins AND in your spray foam. An inspiration my friend!
Thank you Collin! Thanks for all the support :D
Awesome build! I'm glad you enjoyed the time you spent on it. It can be easy to get burned out on a terrain build that takes weeks. The fact that you loved it is evident! Keep up the terrific work!
Thank you so much ! Yes, I loved every minute of this build !! Would make it again in a heart beat but there are so many other things I want to make .. This was a commission build so I will make one again for myself some day. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video ! I hope there are some other videos you might enjoy :)
Great Video i thoroughly enjoyed this, given me alot to think about for my up and coming Diorama i plan on making for some Warhammer. Will you be making more Lord of the rings Pieces like this?
Thanks Jim! Yes I will :) Not exclusively, but I have sevearl Lord of the rings builds in the works. Next week is a Sci Fi build
Brilliant work! It's so refreshing to see that its not essential to have a 3D printer, a proxon or a static grass applicator, and that great terrain can be produced.
Absolutely not essential... although they are very handy tools you can do everything by hand if needed. Just takes a little longer :)
Thank you so much this helped a lot. I got into terrain from making mountains for war of the ring the board game just recently, never in a million years would I have expected myself to like this kinda patient crafting lol
I am so glad it was useful!! Thanks for watching :D
Your skill & technique carving xps is pretty awesome! I'd love to see a vid on the statues. Loved the other one you did on totems. Thanks for taking the time to create content for us to enjoy and learn from! Cheers!
Thank you so much Coleen! I will for sure post a tutorial on the statues very soon. And you are most welcome, I love making the projects and videos, and I am so glad that you guys are getting something out of it ❤️

Amazing ! Going to use your guide to make something similar and play a scenario of middle earth strategy battle game (ring bearer quest) with my daughter
Awesome! And I am very jealous you are going to play with your daughter... my daughter is almost 3. I really hope she want's to play some table top games with me some day :D
Dude this is awesome! It's amazing how little materials you've used to create something that looks so good. Usually in a video like this you'd see all sorts of tools get pulled out that honestly most people don't have, but you've *nailed* it with a knife and foam. Gave me a good kick in the bum to start making my own stuff!
Awesome! Glad it has inspired you to make stuff :D
Brilliant build, my only negative is the colour of your tea at about 20 mins in😂 did it even see the T Bag? (Jokes). Really enjoyed this. Thank you again. 👍👍

10/10 this rules! Here from HotA
Thanks so much for coming to check it out ! HOTA rules, love their channel. More collaborations with them coming in 2021 :)
For anyone who ever decides to try the expanding foam on their own builds, a dremel rotary tool fitted with a small wire brush is a very, very fast way to create fantastic textures for rock. I learned the technique while building terrariums for my dart frogs, but it works just as well for gaming terrain. Just make sure you have the hose of a vacuum next to where you're carving with the rotary tool, as it makes a fluffy foam dust that will go everywhere if you don't use the vacuum to suck it up. I usually have my tool in one hand and the vacuum in the other, which does a fine job of preventing my kitchen table from looking that it was hit by a snowstorm of foam particles.
Thats a great tip! Thank you :D
Great job, Michael!
Thanks zane!!
This is piece of A.A.A.A.A.A.ART!

Great build and great video. I subbed just based off the thumbnail. Having worked with expanding foam on many construction projects, but never having to empty two full cans on anything, I was genuinely concerned about the state of your desk the next morning. Lol. I guess the outer layer set up fast enough to help contain the inner foam. Again, great job, really an amazing build. I gotta go binge watch your past videos now.

Really beautiful job on this one!!! Your dad made it super atmospheric too, thoroughly enjoyed! Ps a possible money saving tip , when I was making things in college I used a tub of Poundland filler mixed with 3/4 of a bottle of Poundland wood glue to make a super strong flexible filler paste for my projects. Might be worth a try on a future build for not much money or effort 🤷🏻
