Weathertop (Amon Sûl), Watch-tower of the North - Region Spotlight
Vložit
- čas přidán 15. 04. 2023
- Weathertop was once a watch-tower of the Dúnedain of the north in Tolkien’s Middle-earth, but just as their civilization of Arnor fell, Weathertop became a ruin, an echo of what came before. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on Weathertop in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

Imagine how powerful anor would've been if it hadn't split up
Sadly I'd disagree. The realm was is terminal decline since the Last alliance. Simply due to the lands difficult geography and sparse population compared to Gondor. Thankfully King Elessar reunited the kingdom
"You've seen him before. He stabbed Frodo on Weathertop."
The Argonath and White city get all the press, but to have seen this tower in its glory days would have been awesome. I imagine standing on the very top and seeing all of the north, from the sea to the mountains. Middle earth bucket list item for sure ✨️
Yeah Amon Sul and also Annuminas seem like they would be beautiful
A strategic point in the North. I would like to imagine the remade tower in the Fourth Age would look like. It would be a safe haven for travelers.
I was just thinking that
All Along the Watchtower would be a perfect score for this video
"Yoystan" has absolutely the best grasp of the Lore that I know of.
Thanks David! I try my best. There’s always more for me to learn 😄
Weathertop was filmed upon a hill in a large farm near Port Waikato, in Waikato region of New Zealand. The surrounding area has many limestone cliffs and boulders, some of which contain fossils.
I can still remember when I was first reading LOTR and it was the description of Amon Sul that first gave me this sense like Middle-Earth was a real place with a real history.
I often think about the details of the recreation of the kingdom of Arnor under Elessar. Since we are told that the lands were largely desolate, with the Shire and Breeland being oases in the empty lands. The Dunedain of the North must have had a settlement somewhere, but it's location is unknown. My guess is that Elessar would have encouraged Gondorians to migrate north to begin a new life. He might even have invited some Dunlendings to settle there. But the land would have been slow to fill and probably took several generations to do it. So I picture Arnor being made up of a number of newly created fortified towns [mostly along the East and South roads] to provide protection from marauders [such as the ruffians who were expelled from the Shire] who might be in the empty lands. Weathertop might be a natural location for such a fortified town, being on a hill and near the East Road.
in ancient times, Arnor was the northern most realm of the men of Numenor, which fell before the onslaught of Angmar in the second age of the earth. The ruins which dot the trollshaws, and old sites such as weathertop are all relics of ancient Arnor.
Third age not the second ;)
I think you meant Third Age.
I remember making it to the Lone Lands in LOTRO, for the first time. Weathertop is visible from everywhere. I took a lot of screenshots.
Loved this profile. Never realized Amon Sul’s place in Middle-earth’s history. Thanks! 😊
Fantastic video. Weathertop always fascinated me as a kid.. just the ancient-ness of it. The stories that were made there.. I was just a young kid, so I wasn't privy to the full tales. But it sparked a love of ancient forgotten places in me that ended up leading me into the Forgotten Realms and the Elder Scrolls... always exploring to find that next ruin.
Man, the short but interesting history of Weathertop!!!
Thanks Mellon, for the history on Weathertop...Until...What If: The Blue Wizards returned to the West...Marion Baggins Out!!!
for the guardian of the palantir there I've always wondered who that was. Seems too simple for it to have been a man. Said guardian would have to be trusted by all sides to be its guardian, and mighty to break through a siege of the witch king on it
What if the dwarves of Khazad Dum had been able to handle the Balrog (maybe with help from Elrond, Glorfindel, and/or Galadriel?). Basically, what would have happened if the Dwarves had kept Khazad Dum?
And apologies if this isn't the right place to post suggestions. :) Love your videos!
I believe that in time, Amon Sul would be remade in the Fourth Age. In due course, a small thriving town would spring up with inns for travellers. With the increased safety with most orcs dead and the remnants hiding in mountains far away, there would be farms scattered around. Where there are people, there's a need for food: cattle, sheep, wheat, and orchards. If the Shire can provide such things, so could the land below Weathertop.
I love the geographic feel of Weathertop as a standalone Butte. I hiked up one in Oregon with a long steady circular trail going around the perimeter. I could look across the plain for miles (the cabin up top was for fire spotting). It was great for a physical experience to mesh with the experience of reading Lord of the Rings.
April Fools idea: what if weathertop was called weatherdown?
Weatherbottom to be precise
Just like to give a shout out to the "Weather Stock" event in LOTRO had some fun times at that one
Maybe they should have given the Palantir to Rivendell?
I love it when you get to the moral of the story. I always appreciate it, and it never fails to bring joy to my heart!
I'd like to think that sometime in the 4th Age, when Weathertop began to be rebuilt, there would be some kind of memorial to Frodo there.
Thanks again for another educational video
Anor was such an awesome faction/region
Arnor was not a faction. It was a kingdom.
@@str.77 I know.
As Aragorn said in the movie, that was the great watchtower of amon sul and with the restoration of the reunified kingdoms. The rebuilding of the northern kingdom would include that of the watchtower itself into a formidable fortress and watchtower on the great north road..
This was once the great tower of amon sul . ( aragon) thanks
Yoystan, I rest in Bree today. your vids are incredible. I want to see you a vid on your opinion, “what if the WitchKing took the ring”.
I really like The Lord of the Rings. Probably read it two or three times a year for the last 50. What the hell is the good thing about getting a hill where you can get viewed from all around? I mean on one hand, if Aragorn say so... but on the other...
Yess new region spotlight 😊🎉 love these
Just shows that it doesn't have to be a vast fortress like Barad-Dur or Minas Morgul to be an important place with great lore attached to it.
As a player of Lord of the Rings online, I was impressed with the game version. While not grand or epic in design, the ruins atop the hill were dwarfed by the hill itself.
This was a fanstique video Yoystan as always, you are always such a great content creator, am always impressed. This was a very haunting video.
Thanks, great topic and very well done.
Wonderful video!
It's almost unbelievable how Tolkien wrote such back stories about Men,Elf,orc,Dwarves and the lands they lived on & passed over! It's almost like he slipped into another dimension and took a history book back here...
Burning it down was one of my favourite missions in Rise of the Witch King.
Nice work dude
Great video!
another informative video and trip down memory lane
I loved the movies portrayal of weathertop, but it always seemed too small. The first time I played LOTRO and saw weathertop I thought they got it right! It felt like it had way more presence and could have been a spot for a watchtower.
Would be cool to see a vid done on the black rock used on the Numenorean structures, which was impervious. Nothing about that anywhere.
I like to think about weathertop rebuilt as a holdfast that would become a beacon of hope and sign of safety and refuge for travelers.
Such a cool location.
Yoystan? I know you have done a video highlighting it before, but where do you believe Melkor's first fortress of Ultmno was in Middle Earth. It's one of those topics that's hotly debated by Tolkiens. Do you believe its ruins are really where the Bay Forochel is now or was it farther east beyond the Misty Mountains?
I tend to believe it was closer to Forochel, as the cold was a legacy of Morgoth. That would also place it within relative range of Angband! But I could be totally wrong, I do like that idea though!
Utumno and Angband were there before Beleriand got sunk in the War of Wrath.
@@MenoftheWest so the cold in Forochel isn't just natural climate because it's north but it's because of Morgoth? I would imagine it's because of the natural climate.
@@abcjuniormilton The Valar in general and Melkor/Morgoth in particular were capable of affecting the natural climate.
@@abcjuniormilton extreme heat and extreme cold were created by Melkor
I love this channel - that voice.
2:30 Simplest but effective solution would be to make it an autonomous Micro State with its own authority.
What if hurin was killed and Huor captured?
🔥👁🔥
Reminds me of firelink shrine
I've always loved Arnor.
To think of it in it's heyday would've been impressive.
I got to think though how and who rebuilt everything after the reunited kingdom was reforged?
Did the DWARVES give a hand in the north...
Great videos as always , a doubt that I have for a long time of course taking into account that professor tolkien died before finishing the work and that would be just speculation but in your opinion In Morgoth's Final Return how he could be a challenge or even dangerous ? , because in the end much of his power was lost to the point where he doesn't even be able to heal the wounds he received from fingolfin do you think he could recover his power? I really wanted to know your opinion and thanks in advance for excellent videos.
For me Jackson's treatment of 1 v 9 with B-Grade actor and torch is what comes to mind re: Weathertop. This is unfortunate.
Are you on crack? Viggo is Aragon.
If I was anywhere i'd say i'm somewhere in the east. A rather fair land to be surprised bit still not without the dark lords influence.
Wow n8ce but I think watchtower has rebuild in fourth age by king aragon right. But what happens to all of people of watchtower
2:24 :)

I saw a recent survey you posted. Your material is wonderful. I think your views may be dropping temporarily as a result due to a recent bad taste (no fault of yours, a completely different project that takes many liberties with the lore) that many fans are rinsing out. I think they'll be back for you.
so was it ever rebuit ?
I have started to wonder - - interested in serious replies - - why the Nazgul didn't care to risk an all-out fight for the ring when it was there within their grasp. Even fearing Elessar, and with Glorfindel or even Gandalf in the area as a further risk, why wouldn't they just go for it? Even if all were destroyed in the battle but the Witch King (probably only temporarily anyway), the ring could still potentially have been won in an all-out fight. By opting for the waiting game with the morgul wound, sure, they expected it to be handed over without a fight very soon (expecting a man's constitution), but what if Ellesar were to prevent such a handover?
The risks of waiting seem to outweigh the benefits, and lo, waiting did not pay off. So what am I missing, why the Nazgul miscalculated on the side of caution? In retrospect I'm sure they wished they had at least tried to seize it despite Aragorn. I doubt if the Witch King was that afraid of him alone. I believe they withdrew rather than slug it out. Maybe Elessar just was too powerful, I can't get it figured out, explain this one to me!
Do you ever try to sneak in an Ardacraft image for something like Weathertop?
Still never understood how Elendil built all this with the people who came over on four ships, or how Isildur and Anarion built Minas Anor and Minas Ithil with the people who came over on five.
They probably had regular men followers from the land. or they took many wives 😮
How was Gandolf the gray able to fend off all(or was it 7) of the Nazgûl for a week but the witch king broke his staff in return of the king when he was the white wizard?
The first instance of an annoying feature in the film. We get somewhere, do not use the common name even once but then later on we will refer back to that name as if everybody had read the books.
2:35 "Forsaken Inn"? What's that? Sounds like a cheesy name from an RPG.
Rebuilding Arnor is such a bad idea. Its a cold barren wasteland filled with ghosts, trolls and wolfs. Gondor barely has enough people left to fill up 1 major city, let alone having enough to colonize some faraway place in the north.
No it isn't. In case you forgot the shire is in Arthedain. Which was part of Arnor. Cardigan further south I also not cold and barren.
@@robertcarter303 An independent part as they ruled themselves. The only thing the hobbits contributed was maybe some archers.
Cardolan you mean? But you are correct. Still it would make no sense at all imo.
I went out with Aragorn when the unnamed Things of this Earth took over and Aragorn basically wanted them to come up with Weathertop in the end, and Ungoliant did so.
Uhhh what??
This seems like a comment written by an AI
"Conflictual"? Is that a word?
Conflictual - Adjective - Characterized by conflict.
This was read a little cursorily, as if the narrator was bored by the subject?
