59:08 Wrap Up - Hry
I like how there's a Seth popping up randomly in behind the face cam once in a while. It's like Seth's shadow trying to pop out.
Looks like someone forgot to unmute their microphone.
Yeah that's so weird! I was like... WTF IS HAPPENING
"Seth's shadow" lol
Yea, I thought i was just crazy
Timestamp?
Very funny to me that the shadows can't block the Voidwalker because it has shadow
The Shadows don't have Shadow because they are not a true shadow, but death's shadow :)
@@mattm7798 oh that's clever, I like that haha!
I remember clowning on Shadow Of Mortality as not being a very good death shadow - but it turns out "not very good death shadow" can still be pretty strong! completely blanking fatal push is a pretty funny side effect
What it adds is consistency. Having twelve copies of your best spell is great, even if some of those copies are distinctly second rate.
and prismatic ending
only hard removal touches it
It turns out that even though it’s not the best shadow a 2 mana 7/7 is in fact good enough
it dodges prismatic ending too
At 38:50 you could've used Hex Parasite in response to the Vial activation to prevent them from putting in the Merfolk Trickster (because when the ability resolved the vial would only have 1 counter). Didn't end up mattering, but still.
Your first opponent having the name "Shadow" is just top tier coincidence.
I also found it quite funny that the deck died to Dauthi Voidwalkers having shadow.
Last one too
Death's Shadow causing Shadow's Death
@@Alikaoz Same player as well.
@@AricHaldan0782 and yet shadow of mortality can't block it... flavor fail xD
I'd love to see you run a non-budget version of this deck at some point.
If you read the article he has one.
I love the flavor of this deck. It's peak "Greatness at any cost." And it even has a strong shadow sub-theme in Death's *Shadow* , *Shadow* of Mortality, Plunge into *Darkness* . My inner Vorthos is having a good day!
The Shadow! I love this obscure reference! I had a friend that had the cassetts of the old 30s radio show. 📻
"The weed of crime bears bitter fruit"
The more "non-budget" version of the deck probably adds a second color for evasion, like Temur Battle Rage, since the main weakness of the deck seems to be the ability for opponents to just chump for days. Great deck!
not only that, the fetchs and shocks will also help in losing life, even thoughtseize would help a lot
Maybe even just adding the Beholder land and the mythic black mdfc land
I was building something similar in mono black, I was gunna run urborgs and funeral charms to give swamp walk
I was thinking if you're gonna splash red, 'throw in' some flings to get around creatures
@@plaidypus3911 so mono black actually has a card called rite of consumption, a sorcery speed fling with lifelink, which sadly would kill any deaths shadows you didn't sac, but since you'd only be flinging to win, would probably be fine
Seth, I just want you to know that practically nobody understood that reference in the intro, but *I* appreciated it! :D
I'm glad someone got it. I grew up listening to old time-y radio. There are dozens of us, dozens!
OMG, man, you're one of the best brewers out there, congrats for the 5-0!
Thanks!
I don't think going down to 1 life intentionally is ever the play. A single shadow will never kill an opponent with one hit, so you'll always either need 2 shadows or two successful attacks. Therefore the maximum any shadow needs to be is half your opponent's life total (10 at the start and maybe lower by the time you attack). In M1G1, I would have gone down to 5 to make the shadows 8/8. This still kills in two hits but let's you survive a bit more interaction from your opponent. Admittedly it wouldn't have been enough here, but I think the point is still valid.
If they are at 20 you have a point, but if they shocked hitting them for 11 is pretty good in case you draw the 7/7 shadow.
I dunno if you factored incidental lifegain into the overall strategy either, though. And WotC started printing a whole lot of that recently lol
Hex parasite on repeat for urza's saga has got to be one of my favorite magic interactions I've seen in a while.
I hate how in a matter of hours from release the deck jump from 103 to 250.
I genuinely love death shadow but the fast jump of price is ridiculous.
just in time for lunch
This guy's eatin' Shadow eheh
I enjoyed the video! Really great take on Death’s Shadow. I would add something you didn’t mention in the wrap up. I think a big factor of this deck going 5-0 wasn’t just dodging the burn matchup, but also dodging the decks that play Solitude. One Solitude not only exiles a Death’s Shadow or Scourge of the Skyclaves, it also causes you to gain enough life to kill all the others. It’s pretty much a Spellskite or bust situation.
As someone who's sat in the burn shadow matchup on both sides multiple times. I think it's not as bad a matchup for either side. A lot comes down to sequencing and getting your opponent to work for you in either chair.
I'd like to point out how good plunge into darkness is on this deck. Like the ability to dig for sideboard cards while also losing life??? Insane!
Yeah, Plunge is amazing in this deck.
This reminds me of old school suicide black where you fed your life to Hatred on shadow creatures.
12 Shadow deck losing against literally Shadow in the Rakdos match Game 2. Poetic irony
Hex parasite was an absolute unit in this deck. The random counter hate was actually super relevant.
With losing life being so easy, it feels like this is a deck that can go to ~5 the turn it deploys threats, then drop to lethal just before attacking. Saves you from getting janked out by Omnath, a flash attacker+removal, or something unexpected but sorcery speed.
Home sagas in the side board could be interesting with Hex Parasite, 'Elspeth's Nightmare' and 'Life of Toshiro Umezawa' in budget, as recurrent removal for blockers, or Urza's saga and Binding of the Old Gods in non budget.
The is probably an OK deck around repeating saga triggers etc with Hex Parasite
This deck is awesome. I love seeing the game against Esper Food. What a sick brew!
Glad you liked it!
16:31 I love when Seth does this lmao. Always makes me laugh :)
I'm very surprised you used the theme from The Shadow. Thats an old school RADIO show from before television. Cudos for the nostalgia.
I grew up listen to old time radio (my local NPR station did old time radio shows from 8-12 PM when I was a kid), some of it is actually pretty sweet.
Great I've been playing 12 whack for the last 2 months to get back into modern, and NOW I NEED a 12 shadow deck to go along with it lol have everyone scared at my lgs of turn 3
Plunge was a low key all star. Finding sideboard cards, lands or threats whilst losing life. That felt like one of the most important cards in these matchups. Aside from parasite
Digging 19 cards deep for a Death's Shadow and naturally drawing a Death's Shadow immediately after was some powerful Magic. Shame you couldn't win that game.
It was amazing how your hex parasite shut down the opponent's Urza's Saga in game 1 match 5. One of the few actual answers to it in Modern apparently lol.
And while losing life to fuel the shadows! Was very sweet
I would be down to see a non-budget version on stream
We didn’t get to see any chests opened! Loved the video :)
That intro was everything!
For anyone looking to upgrade it, Yawgsmoth + Cabal would be good for the odd scenario where you can actually pay the kicker on that guy
REE, there was a point in the video I was going to suggest a different line, it was either in G2/3. Iirc at 27:35, I think the optimal play is paying 6 life so you can wraith into DS. There was another game where Seth didnt swing with the 1/1 twice, which I think may have been a punt, as he had 2 and then 3 copies either in hand/play.
Yes! I needed this budget deaths shadow deck.
Great deck, love it, love Death's Shadow decks, and for sure will try it with my 12 foil shadows! :D
Hex Parasite vs. Urza's Saga was amazing. Gotta love it!
"Budget in modern" is ThE BEST content possible!!!! Thanks, saff
Nice spooky video to celebrate Halloween candy being in stores already!
I think it would be great to play actual leagues instead of 5 ranked games. To see the deck against real top decks like Izzet Murktide/hammer time etc. Instead of playing against brews / fun decks.
The ironic part is that if you had played Hex Parasite t1 instead of inquisition, you could have just removed the counter from chalice.
woah didnt thought of that ! holy. . . thinking back i have missed the point that chalice has COUNTERS on them dayum,. .. . .
This is so sick. I love death’s shadow. And never thought shadow of mortality would ever be playable. Lol.
What a brew! Bravo, Seth :)
Drips with flavor that Plunge into DARKNESS synergies with Death SHADOW! Love its!
I like it! I love it! I want some more of it!
Did not expect "The Shadow" to open this video
Crazy I was just playing the HIstoric version that i came up with myself on Arena. Gotta bring forth the darkness occassionally!
It's almost like wizards should split modern into 2 sets...horizons and non horizons and see what format people actually want.
The hex parasite punishing sagas is hilarious.
Love to see modern. Cool and spicy deck too
For the non budget version of the deck presented in the article i think you should consider 1-2 watery grave to potentially lose life faster the "incidental" way if you dont draw your mass life loss outlets and to potentially activate spellskite in the late game when you are down to 1 life
Wow great job!!
It would be so cool if you do a gameplay with the non-budget-version!
Great Video and deck Saf
Ironic that your shadow creatures couldn't block creatures with shadow
At 39:04 I think the better play was remove counters from aether vial in response to activation. With 4 mana, that still lets you hold up plunge.
Just to ensure I hopefully get a response can we get an updated budget modern list for new players. I need a deck to get into modern that's inexpensive and fairly easy to play. Thanks seth!
I'm sad I didn't see this video earlier. I have a similar budget deck, but it has Village Rites main board, and Cling to Dust in the sideboard.
It needs some red mana for the kicker on the scourge, that was an option on some occasions. Fun deck.
Scourge's kicker is black
Based on the other Seth behind the talking Seth, I would say someone (and this could have been anyone) forgot to unmute their microphone.
I also just realised that most of the time Seth's right hand is on his chin, not the mouse that is running around which further adds to the comedy of it.
Love the opening
This looks insanely fun and is probably better than my pet deck (Izzet Prowess) in every way possible. I think it's time I give up on trying to build an Urza Tron list and pivot into a new deck to pursue.
one or two rite of consumption could have been really cool tech to finish off games as a black fling.
Ditching the Castle Locthwains for Hive of the Eye Tyrants seems like it would fit the beat down plan better. Also bonus graveyard hate.
but less self-damage
@@KynElwynn But as Seth pointed out the deck isn’t really trying to do the incremental life loss plan and the Castle costs quite bit of mana as a way to do it anyways.
Almost feels like mono black hammer time with how swingy it is!
Teferi sat on a stone overlooking the valley. In the waning light of dusk, the sky before him blazed with warm reds and oranges before slowly fading to purple and blue. The first stars twinkled in the sky behind him over the forest. _A true vision of perfection._ he thought to himself.
A breeze brushed his exposed arms. He shivered, grunting as he leaned on his staff to stand, glancing down at the slender shadows stretching beyond his seat. "Must've sat longer than I thought," he grumbled, "they probably haven't left me anything for dinner."
With a deep sigh, he strode off down the dark path between the trees. The darkness welcomed him.
........
A lonely portion grew cold in its bowl near the dying campfire. Friends whispered in fear to each other, huddled against the creeping dark, exhaustion writ large on their faces. But the bulwark of blackness had stayed their feet, even as fear had stayed their will. The deep shadows, ancient as void, danced madly at the edge of their fire - and laughed, cutting their souls like a devil's scream.
In the morning light the shadows retreated. But their teeth dripped with crimson terror, and a red dawn anointed their kill.
Wow!!
@@guilhermedasilva1795 I had fun writing this. After the game against Niv goodstuff, it just felt good to pile onto Teferi.
Great... now I'm wondering if a deck where you Hex Parasite your OWN Urza's saga so you can keep cranking out more constructs is a viable idea.
Frankly, one or two urza's sagas in this deck could be an improvement. I hate that this could be true.
Magic aids has deck like that except you do it with the 3rd saga trigger on the stack before it sacs to tutor the artifact then remove a counter so it doesn't sac
To note, it takes 3 tapped lands/mana each turn...maybe there is a deck where the constructs are more than just big beaters and constitute an alt win con?
@@mattm7798 3 mana and 2 life to make a big boy and tutor a one drop is probably worth it. You can ditch the 2 life cost if you're playing Power Conduit, wherein those removed counters become yet more gas. And now I'm wondering if Lantern Control can come back with Everflowing Chalice, Astral Cornucopia, or Pentad Prism picking up the slack left by Mox Opal... It's probably magic Christmas land to try and Rube Goldberg a mana rock, but it might be fun? Maybe as part of the Karn wishboard...
I feel like a boardwipe like crippling fear to get rid of a wide board instead of Wraith might be good! Keep your shadows safe but get rid of their blockers and swing in could speed up some games!
I'd like to see the non budget version of that with thoughtseize and stuff.
Damn, that intro. "Here's one for my Silent Era homies"
Plunge and the phyrexian creatures is sick in this. I feel like some fetches, maybe a second color to deal with artifacts/enchantments, and thoughtseize make this a totally upgradable deck.
alright I'm buying into that deck
Hard makes me wanna try it with the not budget version. I just love my shadow deck, but always down for fun variety.
🎉 that was too sweeeeeet! 🤘
would love to see a Instant ob nixilis ultimate in standard using a rakdos sac deck with traxos
I made a deck similar to this in historic using the vecna cards
What's up with the sneaky Seth bun that pops in from time to time?
This looks fun
This feels like the original budget hammer time
Oh danf wish you could play this again, like, against burn lol
budget magic and its modern??!! 😱😱 yessss
ok that 1st game with 3 deaths shadows on turn 3 at full power is scary
Would've really liked to see a game against burn or Hammer.
Or Seth's nemesis: Tron.
This is a deck that I would love to see non budget
Hey saffron olive, I just was reminded of how much I enjoy Niv by that first game and I wanted to see if you’d ever be inclined to do something spicy along those lines.
finally modern budget!
Great deck great video, is burn a problem matchup? Not being able to plunge much if at all seems like it'd hurt consistency, but if you draw enough fatal pushes and shadows I guess it becomes easy.
I wanted to build a mono black DS list with vendetta and devour in shadow thought seize, etc
Reminder that Hex Parasite is best used against planeswalkers if they have out versus on itself :)
Brewmaster Seth. The mad lad did it.
Ive been thinking about playing death shadow in d&t with adanto vangaurd it lets you do something similar and the card that takes counters off is tutorable with urzas saga
Seth at 1 life vs the red opponent: "what could they POSSIBLY draw into here?"
"All you gotta do is kill them on turn 3. That's it. That's all you gotta do."
Huh, why didn't I think of that?
Hey Seth!
Do you think that a non-budget version of this deck could use a copy or two of Near-Death Experience?
As usual, thank you for the amazing content.
.....I can't believe the 1st _Budget Magic_ 5 - 0 of 2022.....is in *MODERN!!*
...I can't add anything beyond that.
Wow.
To note, other than merfolk, the deck didn't face alot of aggro and zero burn, so you basically auto lose against burn and it get's trick with aggro as often they have bolts.
Against a deck like burn we mostly don't pay life and trust that our opponent will lower our life enough to turn on the Death's Shadows. I don't think those matchups are great, but they also aren't real auto-losses if you play it that way.
@@MTGGoldfish Thanks for replying and for the amazing content. The advantage shadow +blue has is stubborn denial. The window has to be super tight when playing mono black. Once you get into the range where you're shadows are good(around 7 to 8 life), burn can just win out of nowhere and not sure there's anything but hoping to have a creature to sac to purge?
By auto loss, I didn't mean literally an auto loss, but like if burn were playing against soul sisters.
I do remember pre grixis death shadow when it was suicide shadow the burn matchup was always really interesting. I agree with another poster having a way to give trample seem like a key missing sideboard piece, since then even if burn holds back at say 5 life, you can 1 shot them.
What is the non-budget version of this deck? Great video saf
4:47 Is Seth's hair trying to escape?
If someone owns thoughtseize or has the budget should those be added over streetwraith?
Ratchet Bomb has gotta going on!
Killer intro
Nice! 👌
