The "Heel Clap" is the greatest contribution to music since the 80's. Super smart idea..... how every Strip Club in America is not doing this song at least once a night just baffles me.
Gotta appreciate the commentary on selling out here. While she’s becoming a stripper which is generally considered a degrading job, she’s actually just stepping up from staff to star. She’s got more control of her image and future as a stripper than he does selling out for fame. In the end she’s being truer to rock here than he is, who’s demoted to being something he’s not.
@@Movierealzster1 Isn't there a scene where they're comparing miseries and she says that she's a pole dancer in a cheap night club and then he says "I'm in a boy band." "You win"

@@Movierealzster1 The film does not do that, it is a thought that comes from the character and from how she sees it, there is more than a scene in which the two (Mary J. Blige says" The stage is a pedestal, when you are up there you are untouchable and when you are up there you can have it all "after that phrase begins the staging of the song Bearing in mind that the song talks about a girl who gets what she wants when she sets her mind on it while still being herself (The descriptions of her attitude and the chorus "Anyway you want it that's the way you you need it ") and dualism, that is, his scenes show that, while she finds a way to empower herself and be herself, controlling her image as she wishes on his side, he has to renounce who he is To achieve his dream, that's why in the scene they compare their miseries because for her despite everything it is still a job that is seen badly socially and that she sees it in the same way
Imo, they both show things the MC's don't really want to do, however where with the girl the decision is hers, they show her dressing herself, walking towards the stage, showing her determination. I’m hoping that in my lifetime we can see more of this kind of genre bending stuff. Mary J. Bilge covering Journey is just god level stuff. Amazing concept, masterful execution. I’d listen to a whole album on this, on repeat, in a heartbeat. This was so excellent.
This movie was so fun! The talent is unbelievable and when I found out Mary J. Bilge was singing I was hooked! Mary you are one classy lady! I absolutely LOVE your voice!
Not just vocals, also as a character. She clearly respects the girls she hires. She tells Sherri the fastest way she’ll earn the money she needs is by dancing but at he same time acts like “I won’t force you to do anything you’re not comfortable with yet”. There was that scene in shadows of the night where a customer grabbed Sherri’s butt and she splashed a drink at him. Most employers would fire people on the spot for something like that
When a customer complains about service and wants to speak to the manger... all of a sudden employees burst into this song, and are appearing out of nowhere...that would be epic
It's been a musical for many years! In fact the music executive that stands up and says does he rap, is the original stage drew. He's called Constantine maroulis. I've seen it twice in the UK, last time just a couple of weeks ago and it's a phenomenal show, slightly different storyline but my favourite musical EVER!
