- It's great to see Sony's APS-C cameras getting a new fast standard zoom lens, and one with parameters (and a low price) that seem to beat the competition right off the bat. Have Tamron managed to pull something special out of the hat this time?

When Christopher Frost uploads a lens review - you sit down and watch
Yes, even if you don't own that camera or brand. I don't shoot Sony or APS-C, but I will NOT miss a video :D
Stay awhile and listen
And hit like even before done watching
Aggree
Absolutely, when the review is totally "unbiased". How many of you like your lens review with some politics sprinkled on top?
Picked this lens up when it came out back in January. It's the perfect all round lens for APS-C if you don't already own the Sony 16-55G and it's several hundred cheaper too, with image stabilization.
Thanks for the review, the 70mm performance is good to know.
That rocket booster metaphor is gold!!!
It's going to be dated pretty soon though hehe
@@christopherfrost As a chinese subscriber , emmmm, burning rocket booter to earth is very usual among countries.there is really no point to criticize China for doing so.

What a great lens. I wish it was available for Fuji X mount - I'd get it in a heart beat!
SAAAAME. Fuji has excellent bodies, but overpriced lenses, E-mount has pretty meh bodies, but excellent lens options.
I was thinking the same.
@@professionalpotato4764 I think the 16-55mm 2.8 from Fuji is actually well worth the money.
@@nordfresse Maybe when it's on sale during Black Friday (about $800 I think?), but I think the normal price is too much. You could get a Sigma 24-70 on the E-mount for the same price.
Idk, maybe it's a psychological thing but I don't feel comfortable spending money when I know the same amount gets me more performance elsewhere. Better AF in stills, nicer photos (bokeeeehhhh), usable even with Sony's cine line like the FX6.
If Fuji made a 16-35 f/2 WR though, I will buy it. No questions.
I must say, Fuji's sensors is what makes f/2.8 viable on APS-C. On my Canon 200D, f/2.8 is never enough cos that thing has the dynamic range of a potato. Nikon was better, and Sony was a bit better than Nikon, but they don't come close to Fuji imo.
@@nordfresse I do not. Optically it's good, but there are better performers out there. But more importantly, for the price, lacking image stabilisation is an insult. Especially when Fuji only have 2 camera's at present that have IBIS.
There really is something special about the f/2.8 standard zoom lenses and the Tamrons always punch well above their weight!
Been waiting for this review for a while. Excited to see Tamron, sigma, viltrox and others give us good, low cost APS-C e-mount lens where Sony doesn't!
I got this lens for my a6600 and your review is spot on. It's a great lens being very versatile with close minimum focus and F2.8. I Like the zoom control action as they did some magic so it will not creep out by itself without needing a lock button. Has a slightly warmer colour than the Sony 16-55mm which I quite like.
That special moment when you own the lens.... You just sit... and enjoy... and smile when he says: HIGHLY RECOMENDED....
Your 1 of 2 people I trust for lens reviews.
Your reviews always adequately express the negatives without being a "negative Nancy", which is much appreciated.
Omg yes!!!! I've been missing a native Sony E Mount version of the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 that I had on my Canon. Good to see this being available now.
Tamron really seem to be able to make their 'cheap' build quality feel quite good! Another great review 👍
Cant wait for your 11-20 2.8 review🙌🏻🙌🏻
Yes. Also 16-250 RXD, ps, LD-6. Can't wait.
@@Arcticfox7 what is this? Never heard of it
Thanks christopher, this lens knocks out 16-55 sony and fuji in price as well as in range and quality. Not to forget th image stablization also.
Price and range, yes.. but image quality I’d still say the sony is slightly better.
I sold some equipment and got this lens a few weeks ago. I was looking forward to this review. Thank you.
Classic, watching Chris’s review after getting the lens!
But the question is, what are YOUR thoughts about the lens?
I love how you continue to produce such great content.
Been looking at reviews for days and yours is easily the best, I've decided to get one. Thank you!
Awesome review. I'm thinking of grabbing this lens and consolidating what's in my bag. I have the Tamron 17-28 MM and Tamron 28-70MM now but neither has VC (image stabilization) and I'm getting really tired of hauling a gimbal around all of the time.
Your review, specifically with the examples of the VC, helped a ton.
you are my go to lens reviewer, brilliant work
still the best lens review channel ever.
Best review on CZcams. Thanks for sharing it, especially as I own the same small a5100 body with kit lens. Thinking about to buy this Tamron lens, my only concern is about the flashlight. Due to the big size of the lens comparing to the small body, may it will block partially the light coming from built in flash.
Cheers for keeping the little people informed and up to date with aps-c E-mount, Thank you Mr. Frost.
this is the review i was expecting, as usual you do a great work by doing this reviews for people like me who always want to make the perfect purchase of lens. Thanks a lot !
Nice review...a detailed side by side comparison with Sony 16-55 f/2.8 would be awesome👍
Great review & great lens . Please bring the 11-20 f/2.8 soon
Mostly impressed that you have a bottle of Crystal Pepsi! Awesome lens and gear review!
Finally decided to pick it up as there was a good deal on it from a retailer here in Germany, was able to get it for 730€, can't wait for it to arrive in the mail next year ;-)
And how is it going?
Good review. I would have liked to see more testing in the intermediate zooms. Only one short test at 35mm, otherwise its all at the end of the ranges...
I really don’t understand why a lot of these lenses don’t get EF-M versions.
The mounts are pretty similar and the rest would just be different firmware, I would assume...
Thanks for yet another great review !!!
I'm quite sad as an EOS M6 Mark II user that the EOS M system hasn't been getting much attention from even Canon themselves, despite cranking out new bodies on par with their DSLRs. I really hope that changes.
Was just thinking the same thing!
@@snappyapple6328 i dont think Canon will change its mind, so i decided to sell my M6ii gear and changed to Fuji.
Because it means costs (changes in design, reverse engineering the AF system, manufacturing) and the camera sales volume seems to low for Tamron to invest. Not to mention that Canon will probably kill off EOS-M in favor of ApS-C RF cameras.
@@lewkon What reverse engineering do you mean exactly ?
The AF works just the same as EF lenses. The EF-to-EF-M adapter is literally a direct connection of all contacts. Without any extra electronics.
And I believe Tamron has made quite a few Canon lenses. The flange distance of EF-M is basically the same as Sony’s mount.
So they only need to make an actual EF-M mount... That doesn’t need any research
Cant wait for your review on the new Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD Lens for Sony!
Nice review as always. This lens bokeh (and its artifacts) looks almost vintage in a way. Should be great for video!
I always pray you say "full frame" at the start with that kind of lenses !
the way you do you reviews really makes it easy to make a purchasing decision. i recently paired it with my A6400
How is it?
@@enjoygary it was the perfect upgrade from the kit lens in every way.
Insane quality performance! I bought sony 16-55 f/2.8 and i am happy with it, but if i had to decide again I would buy cheaper tamron!
Thank you Christopher for reviewing this lens. I am going to heavily consider this lens when I buy my new Sony camera! Thanks so much!
When they make an RF version of this lens, i'll buy one for my Canon R7.
This is the modern day sigma 17 50 f/2.8,a truly ground breaking lens
Is there something like this lens for EF-S or EF? I have the 7D2 and find it annoying to change lenses for the types of photography I do. Something like a 17-70 would be perfect for me
This would go really well with the rumored high-end APS-C camera coming this year.
What a great lens 👌
Looks like exactly what I was looking for to upgrade from my Sony Zeiss 16-70 F4 OSS lens for when shooting indoors. The Sony 16-55 G F2.8 is not a good fit for my A6000 and A6300 because it does not have stabilization plus I would be losing some zoom capability vs the Zeiss. Losing 1mm on the wide end on the Tamron is not a huge issue for me in light of the fact that the Tamron is several hundred dollars cheaper than the Sony 16-55 , has stabilization, more zoom range in a reasonably sized. well built package with a constant F2.8 max aperture. Picking one up before my next trip abroad :-)
Really very nice presentation,... thank you for this..
F2.8 will not change even when i go to 70mm.. isn't?
This is going to sound like a odd thing to say but,, i would love to see a direct comparison of the Tamron 17-70mm with the older Sony 18-105mm .
Last time i rented the 18-105 i was kinda disappointed with it.
Great vid. Would you put this over the Sigma 18-50 f1.8? Thanks!
Thank you. We are waiting for the test of new compact lenses from Sony, 24mm 40mm 50mm
I've got this guy, love this thing
I wish this was available for APS-C DSLR’s, but I have a feeling that it wouldn’t be possible with these specs, probably why equivalent lenses end at 55mm.
Sony has a stake in Tamron. All of their newer lenses are for Sony cameras only....for now.
@@standhd ahh gotcha, thanks for the info :)
Still waiting for the day Sony releases an APS-C with dual SD cards... Soooo many nice lenses on E-mount.
And centre eye-piece with its full frame counterpart form factor yet lightweight design, just like what Nikon did with their Z50
@@nigelmatthew8534 Exactly. A good new APS-C sensor in the A7 bodies will be amazing.
@@professionalpotato4764 looking forward to that day.
Tamron 17-28mm, please!!
That lens would be a winner, if it was available with Nikon mount. Then I could attach it to a m43 camera with a Metebones Speedbooster and then get a 12-50/2.0 lens. Dark corners at the widest, I would guess, but even better performance, as I have seen when I have testet other lenses made for the Nikon DX format with speedbooster on m43.
That's the one I've been waiting for!
Got it today! very satisfied so far 😁
If this was a 16-xx I'd seriously be considering coming back to APS-C
Just returned from backpacking trip from Scotland and can confirm its a great lense. Also, found the VC is not doing much when shooting the video, I have one very windy day and still could see the vibrations coming from tripod. I did video on youtube completely shot with this lens, if interested pls check it, 8:50 for vibrations from tripod.
Hello
I like your reviews, I would like to suggest how much you test APS-C lenses, that you test in your full frame camera in SUPER 35mmm format, to see the performance in photography, because in your full frame even with the 1.5x factor of the super format 35mm results in an image with enough pixels for many uses, thank you.
This is great. Have you ever tried the Sony Zeiss 16-70 f4? I wonder how much better this is in image stabilization and quality
they released it for the fuji x mount now:)
This lens is a bargain hands down comparing to every other lens in any apsc system considering the price. And is a gold for sub 1k$ sony apsc cameras. But I think Sony 16-55 2.8 still has a market for those paying 1400$ for the premium apsc bodies which already have ibis and it's performance in both wide and tele end is exceptional despite this tamron lens, and the bokeh balls quality of it is just perfect.
I had bought for very less money the Nikon 16-85mm F4-5.6... The problem was light ghosting... Then I have bought for less money ($280) the Nikon 16-80mm F2.8-4 ... Very less light ghosting, and excellent image stabilization... How would you compare this lens with the Tamron... The Tamron has for me too much light ghosting... very bad for sun setting/rising...
Hey Chris, do you know on spec if the VC on this lens will work in conjunction of the IBIS on camera bodies with IBIS (A6600, a6500)?
Hi. The dust ingress is something I've read about before with this lens. nearly €1000 for the lens where I am for x mount.
would the dust sealing be better with the newer batches?
Hello, are you going to do a review about the Tamron 11-20 f2.8? Thanks.
Pls a video about the new Tamron 11-20 mm 2.8
So it's basically a 24-105 f4 on FF, only smaller. Not bad.
Excellent review!
Outstanding review
I keep hoping for some of these newer designs to come to Nikon Z mount. I know Nikon's glass is very good, but saving a few hundred dollars on some lenses would be nice.
Would you recommend this lens for making fitness content. I own a a6400 with the kit lens.
Thanks! Very helpful!
So you buy the cheap Sony A6100 and be a very happy shooter! Much more affordable than the A7C or the A7 iii combined with 24-105 f4‘s. Add the cheap Sigma 56 or 30mm 1.4 and you have a true full frame rivaling kit without the cost.
F2,8 on APSC= F4 on Full Frame
@@muttishelfer9122 I am aware of that. That’s why I made this comparison to full frame 24-105mm f4 lenses in the first place. The Tamron is the exact equivalent.
I have the cheap Sony a6100 + Sigma 16mm 1.4 and Sony 50mm 1.8.
Looking to add one more all in one lens and trying to decide among Tamron 17-70 /Sony 18-105/Sony 18-135. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Main purpose of my photography is Landscape.
I have seen a bad copy being reviewed by a Chinese reviewer on his a7R4. At 70mm it was very soft. Chris' copy seems to be decent.
I have been considering using this lens and shoot in square 1:1 ratio on a full frame camera.
I think it's the same here at 70mm f2.8, but already higher at f4 everything looks better
Thanks for sharing
Is this only for aps-c?!
Great review! I've cross-compared reviews the Fuji and Sony versions of this lens and the Sony version seems much sharper and contrasty. Is that a difference in JPEG engines between Sony and Fuji, or somehow this lens performs worse on Fuji? I'm assuming that JPEGs are used since you mentioned that in-camera corrections are turned on.
Camera corrections often get applied to RAW as well. But in the video yes it seems like jpegs. But also keep in mind differences in megapixels.
Please please please do Tamron 35-150 vc OSD!!!
Love your review! I only trust you
Does it have auto focus? I see it is stated as full time manual focus in Amazon.
Which would you pick between this one and the new Sigma 28-70 2.8 ?
I want this lens.
So is it ok to use that lens for sony a7ii?
Looks great
Tell me please if there is the same problem at 65mm that you need to raise to F4?
He does not discuss the size of the lens much. I found it oversized for the Sony A6400, making it very front heavy and perhaps overall too heavy for a portable travel setup.
The sigma 18-50 is much better if you don't need the stabilization, agreed it's gigantic.
I was waiting for this one, Thnx!
I'm so used to seeing focus breathing in most lenses that it looked strange in this video, a lens not having it 😬
me and my r10 dreaming for that lens🥲
I have this lens it is the bomb 🔥
Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 review pls
Tamron, please, please release this lens with Fuji X mount
How is the focus ring activated?
When I hold the lens there is a sound inside the lens is it normal?
how is the weather sealing?
It’s have stabilization?
Somebody has a new A7riii.
seems that the old sigma 17-50 F2.8 for DSLR is still a good option for under 300€
Yes, I loved that Sigma lense when I was shooting with a Canon 750D. Sigma have mde some amazing lenses for the Sony full frame Line, but nothing of interest for the Aps-c line up. I think Tamron hit a forgotten market with this lense
would have liked to seen maybe 67-69mm to see if its better than 70. but nice review anyway. hopefully I can get this soon to replace my 18-105mm f4
Can you please explain how to turn on / turn off image stabilisation on 17-70mm.
TIA
You have to go into the camera's menu
LMAO like he said, just like with any other lens. You do it in body unless there is a switch on the lens body it self
Will it also be available for canon mount?
No howdy again everyone :(
Damn, if only this was for full frame
I have a aps-c camera, wich lens do you recommend, the Tamron 17-70mm or the sony 24-105 g looking at image quality? Thanks
The 24-105 g is meant for FF. Although it can be mounted to APS-C bodies, it wouldn’t make much sense to do so now that there are several aps-c options available.
Compared to this Tamron, the Sony zoom has 1 stop less aperture, bigger & heavier, as well as more expensive. 24mm on a crop body is not wide enough to be an all-rounder zoom (for most people).
In terms of image quality, It is quite good (although a bit soft at 105mm), but not at the level of the tamron or the sony 16-55g.
All depending on what you're using it for I use prions as well as zooms but I see how some people like to be lazy and only use zooms so they can not have to spend money on Prime's if that's the case then this will be the perfect one and all lens for people like that because 17 mm you have your wide-angle and then all the way through to 70 you have closer more compact focal length.
I will definitely say this is the upgrade and replacement to the 16 50 kit lens.
So hands down pick this lens up
what happened to 24mm and 50mm?
