  • Having a look at the intricacies of dry brushing. It may be considered basic, but I think it's a valuable tool/techniques in may hobbyists arsenal.
    I'm no pro painter and this is probably far from perfect, but it's how I do it and the results aren't too shabby 😉
    Hope you enjoy and find it some use 👍

    Top class tips. I love the drybrush palette idea. That's really clever!
    Btw those really large make up brushes are invaluable for dusting miniatures.

      Cheers man, those really big brushes are a bit too soft for painting but, yeah, would be great for dusting 😁👍

      @TheDrunkenOrk I use them all the time as there is usually big gaps between my painting sessions, so i need to give models a good dust before I start painting them.
      Espesially usefull for large vehicles.

    I recall learning about dry brushing miniatures and wish I could find the article I had read back around 1986. This was with enamels. The brush used in the article showed brushes absolutely destroyed from neglect, their hairs clumped and splayed out in the worst way. The results were outstanding!
    I wonder if that technique is why I use brushes as consumables. I do not purchase brushes that cost more than $2 or $3 and often go for the packs of brushes with 5-20 costing as low as .50cents per brush.
    I have tried to approach things differently in the last 2 years or so. No longer using enamels, or extremely rarely using them, I keep my brushes cleaned daily. Windsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer has restored life and renewed quality of my brushes.

      Absokutely, drybrushing can be a really effective tool, though I haven't used enamels since airfix kits back in the 80s
      My brushes tend to fall into 2 groups. Decent ones that are cared for (still all under 10 quid each mind), then a bunch of cheap ones (paid about £8 for 50) which get hammered 🤣

    It was the millions of tubes on the painboy that got me, really irritating model to paint.
    Thanks for posting this. I have been attempting to dry brush since I started painting back in February of this year and have failed terribly each time.
    I'll follow these tips and hopefully crack it next time.

    5:42 Waddya mean 'it doesn't have a right way up'? That's an original Jackson Pollack that is (with a bit of Van Gogh in the texture). I fully expect that to be hanging in a place of honor in your hobby office when it's finally finished--perhaps behind some museum glass.

    Always used to buy brushes from art shops when they had the sales on, ended up with shedloads of flat brushes and they do work well for what I used to call 'underpriming'.

      @@frogblasttheventcore69 Sorry for the late reply, I used to get notifications of replies but now I'm only getting notifications of new vids. Underpriming was a dodge I came up with to try to cut down on the painting side by priming models black from underneath, followed by I think it was 'Dryad Brown' aerosol matt primer from GW sprayed from slightly above horizontal and then using a flat brush to paint white primer brushing downwards from the top. The idea was to use semi-transparent top coat to allow the different primer shades to influence the top coat and avoid the requirement for having to dry-brush highlights and such to give 'lighting' effects.

    All Model Makers should have a current stock from Boots the Chemists who do an excellent range of Make-up brushes.
    Just tell the assistant you check out with, that it is for Modelling and that its not for old age revitalization (looking younger with make-up).

    I think I might have to make one of those texture boards. I've seen 'proper' ones, like Artis Opus makes and it doesn't seem worth the money to me, but the homemade, proper orky, one looks great! :D I've got loads of sand and grit and cheap paint I could throw together as well, good idea.

    • @JoeHardacre
      @JoeHardacre Před rokem +1

      TBH the artis opus ones are really not that expensive and they're fantastic. The technique is applicable for any decent shaped makeup brush, but the series D brushes basically changed my entire approach to painting vehicles

    • @TheDrunkenOrk
      @TheDrunkenOrk  Před rokem +1

      I see them like wet palettes, really useful and dead easy to make. There's ones you can buy out there, and I'm sure they're great, but might as well try it out first. The sand and grit with a bit PVA would be excellent 👍

      @@TheDrunkenOrk what shade green would recommend for orks? In Army painter that is

    • @TheDrunkenOrk
      @TheDrunkenOrk  Před rokem +1

      @keithgroce9983 the ork flesh isn't my favourite, it's too dark yet vibrant. Which sounds a bit funny but if you've seen it you'll know what I mean.
      If it's army painter I'd go Malignant Green, then 'green it up' with a wash of Biel Tan Green from GW (without it it's a bit too sickly) 👍

    What is the power claws made from?

    • @TheDrunkenOrk
      @TheDrunkenOrk  Před rokem +2

      It was a standard ork power klaw but with the 'thumb' replaced with a killsaw blade, and the middle claw finger was cut from a killa kan claw. The other two finger klaws were the scalpel 'fingers' off the painboy klaw. Then just added some syringes, also from the painboy, and some greenstuff pipes 👍
