Elegant Olympic dives fly by in a matter of seconds. Because of that, it’s hard to know what to look for when you try to judge the sport from your couch. One thing that’s easy to see, though? The splash.
If you’ve watched any Olympics diving coverage, you may have noticed that the splashes athletes make are tiny. Divers spend years training to perform with minimal splash, in the same way that gymnasts train to stick their landings.
In this video, Team USA’s head diving coach Drew Johansen explains the three major components he uses to guide his athletes towards smaller splashes: the above water position, the underwater swim, and the underwater pike.
And while the sport of diving isn’t all about getting splashes, a small splash is the perfect punctuation to a job well done.

Exactly, it is a no dive if the hands aren't the first and only point to enter the water first.
One diver in the synchronised landed hands and feet, under rotated, and even though his partner was near perfect they scored zeros.
Not the splash but the entry, as huge slashes have scored so long and hands enter first.
I mean obviously if you enter wrong there a huge splash, but as they pointed out there is no specific rule about the splash it just falls under the aesthetics of the dive and execution.

the boards have a very gritty texture on the surface, but with the amount of force you are putting on the board and the board back on to you, if your body is a little too far off center in any direction you can still slip somewhat easily. it happens more at highschool level as the boards aren’t replaced as often as a college/uni would, so the grit wears down more.

Nitpicking but it bothered me as someone who used to dive. They didn’t scratch her dive because of a big splash. You can have a huge splash, you’ll just get less points.
They scratched the dive because she didn’t complete what she said she would. You choose the dives you are doing well before the competition starts, and there is no changing it. If you see you will do a reverse one and a half, you won’t get points for a reverse flip or a reverse double. You have to do the dive listed.

Nothing else even comes close. The incredible, precision timing, body tuck, angular momentum generation, and then the final entry into the water is beyond unbelievably awesome. However I never realized the additional precision work that goes into the actual entry and post entry into the water to minimize the surface splash. WOW! It is like a video talking about how to shoot 3 pointers in basteball perfectly, and showing footages of DeAndre Jordan making threes as postive examples and Steph Curry sliped at the dunk attempt and shot an air ball from the corner afterwards in staples center as a negative example. Not mentioning the techinique to minimize the splash are discovered by Chinese coaches back in the days.

if you know anything about diving, you probably know that Chinese divers are arguably the most precise and technical with splash management, in fact this specific technique you talked about was first discovered by Chinese coaches a couple of decades ago. Yet the only time a Chinese diver shows up in your vid is to demonstrate a 0/10 dive followed by a pretty mediocre dive🥲 and big ups to the amazing 14 yr old diver Quan Hong Chan for scoring two perfect scores to win the Olympic 10m diving gold with a total score of 466(world record)🤲🏻
edit: in the current anti-Asian climate, this can come across as a little insensitive because dedicating a whole vid to diving techniques without showing any Chinese divers seems pretty intentional if you have been paying attention to diving in the past couple of decades.
And since people wanna bring up the Chinese government and politics under this thread, yes we demand accountability from the PRC government, but how is acknowledging the athletic talent of Chinese divers related to glorifying political actions from the PRC
and in your logic, should we not acknowledge the Canadian athletes because half of Canada's history is colonial genocide and the current Canadian foster care system is practically the legal version of residential schools? should we not acknowledge the American athletes because the whole of America is the definition of mass incarceration and institutional discrimination? No because straight hands would cut the water until it reaches the head where the airbubble produced will be bigger, by cupping the hands you create a small opening for the head and torso to pass throug that will reduce the splash, allso, diving with straight hands makes the head take allot of the impact from the water which can hurt quite a bit.
In cliff diving breaking the surface with your hands is important to not dammage the head.

@@silvervixen007 they showed her "nailing" it with a score of 70 and then proceed to say an American diver scored 90 in the trials. You see what that does? It minimizes the standard of Chinese diving. So yes, everything IS against China.
