  • Mass production of watermelons begins with meticulous planning and cultivation. As the watermelons ripen on the vines, teams of workers gather in the early morning to harvest the fruit, employing various techniques to carefully detach them without damage. Once harvested, the watermelons are swiftly transported to the processing facility, where they undergo a series of automated and manual sorting processes. Automated systems facilitate the cleaning, polishing, and labeling of the watermelons, while workers stationed along conveyors ensure precise sorting and packaging. With each step optimized for efficiency and quality, the facility churns out vast quantities of watermelons destined for distribution. From there, trucks equipped with refrigerated containers transport the fruit to supermarkets and retailers worldwide, meeting the insatiable demand for this beloved summer staple.
In 2020, the global production of watermelons reached an astounding 101.6 million tonnes, with China (mainland) emerging as the dominant player, contributing a staggering 60% of the total production at 60.1 million tonnes. Notably, several other countries also made significant contributions to the global watermelon production landscape. Secondary producers such as Turkey, India, Iran, Algeria, and Brazil each boasted annual production figures ranging from 2 to 3 million tonnes in 2020. This distribution highlights the widespread cultivation and popularity of watermelons across various regions, underscoring its status as a staple fruit in diets worldwide.

There are a few things to look out for. The stripes should be even in size. If it's shiny, it's under ripe and dull is ripe. The spot where it sits on the ground should be more of a yellow/orange for lots of flavour and if it's white/light yellow it doesn't have much flavour. Elongated is more watery while uniform size and heavy is sweet. You can look at what the webbing means but that starts to be too many things to take into consideration. I follow these guidelines and I've been lucky in what I pick. I'm often asked what I'm looking for when I'm inspecting a watermelon to buy and I tell them just what I've told you but I am also able to show them as well so it's easier to understand. I have aspergers and I enjoy anything to do with food but especially picking the perfect fruit and vegetables. You can find all the information online but I thought I'd share my knowledge so hopefully it's easier for you. I hope it may help you to not waste money on watermelons that have no taste. 😊

I love watermelon but the price went up so an average sized one cost $US15 in my country. Just this year the crops have recovered and thry are at the moment $US4. I've been making sorbet, dehydrating slices and eating it as is. I've made up for the past few years. 😊
