- I made a fully working game console inside of a controller.
In this video, I will show you how to make a DIY raspberry pi zero game console that runs Retropie inside of a controller. This is a very simple and easy raspberry pi project that only took me 1 day to complete.

Would you guys like me to make a version 2 of this?
Electronic Grenade Yes!
Yes that would be cool to see!
yes. i believe that with a bit of modding, you can get power over hdmi
hey i hope you me from the intro video and patreon
nice work keep up iknow that is will be awesome work
Thanks Rishi!
Next time, turning a game console into a controller
You know I got here from a video of someone who made a portable GameCube handheld.
Perhaps he can do the same playing all MAME arcade games only.
LMAO!
That's gonna be one heavy controller
Saw a video where someone turned a 360 into a PCB hacked fight stick.
Just think for a second... that now we have technology that allows us to have what a whole arcade machine once had in a controller. That's progress.
Instructions unclear controller now filled with raspberry jam and pie crust
r/puns
@@hiimaRandomGamer yes
Same, so unclear
and dont forget the hot glue
@@Mostly_Liminal yes
Damn this is one of the coolest raspberry pi creations I've seen
I literally own countless plug and play controllers. To see someone do that with and HD device is amazing.
This kind of stuff really interests me because I'm taking GCSE electronics
You should make a portable Rapberry Pi console with a 3D printed case, some RPi compatible screen and controller buttons salvaged from such an Xbox 360 controller. You really make good tutorials, and I would like to see one like this from you.
Raspberry Boy.
This is awesome! Good job!
in version 2 remove motors in place of batteries to get rid of the extra wires.
If he was going to do that he should had just statred with a wired battery. Beside, what battery would fit in the spaces for the rumble pads? But I do understand the sentiment; a rumble pad isn't entirely necessary, especially since older games didn't boast such compatibility. But for some 3D games with that support it would still be nice to have.
Hey Ninja. I love ur gh setlists
I'd say it's completely pointless if you're going to need wires for it anyway.
That's such a good idea
I love plug and play controllers!
Welp, after first seeing this video three years ago, I didn't do anything this complicated, but I did buy a NES-themed case for a Pi 4b that I put this system on, since a Pi Zero wasn't powerful enough for most systems newer than the SNES. Thanks for showing me that RetroPie existed, though! :D
Great video!!
You can power your raspberry from HDMI but it has to be MHL standard(more current allowed on 5V HDMI's rail).
So it’s a programmable plug and play. Neat
This looks like a cool project! I think im gonna try it with another controller if i get one (I'll also need to get a raspberry zero.
You're a genius
You should look into powering the raspberry pi over hdmi from a powered hdmi port or a hdmi power injector
exactly my thought
This really helped, im making a custom 3ds computer. And this helped me make the controller and shit
Wow man... Ur a genius!!
awesome!
heat shrink tube on power and hdmi cable together might look and feel nicer, I like the project too.
It worked yesssssss!
10/10 plug 'n' play
I subscribed bro
My only critique would be to say shrink tube would look much nicer for the cable wrap
For a v2, you should put batteries where the vibration motors are. I don’t think they get used at all in retropie
I just realized that this could be done, but much easier, with USB C! It can carry everything: video, audio, power, etc. I've been meaning to make some sort of portable console like this for some time now, and I might just steal this idea and stick in my own little changes.... (Keyboard, for example and detachable screen for portability)
I'm actually planning on doing this but with a raspberry pi 3 and wireless controller
i saw the title and knew i had to watch
The definition of plug and play
A little late, but this seems unnecessarily messy. Maybe for a version 2, design a custom bottom half for a common controller (say, a wired Xbox 360) and print that out. With a bit of sanding and some TLC later, you should be able to mount the components together and it should work without issues, as well without a bunch of hot glue and you can sell it in kit form.
Cool
Can it not be powered some how off the hdmi lead ?, great videos btw
You should have swapped the AB/YX buttons around to be in the correct positions for Retropie / SNES gaming. And a nylon cable shroud would have looked nicer than electrical tape.
jakkspacific who needs them
I plugged the pi into my computer in the micro usb port closest to the led and I have the folder named retropie on the micro sd card but the green light does not flash no matter what. It flashed the first time I plugged it in to the pi but I didn't have the folder on it so the files didn't carry over. Any Ideas how to fix this?
Instead of tapping the whole cable... may I suggest you use like a braided cable cover and just heatshrink the ends so it looks way less ghetto. :D
WOAH
I have an idea, cut a hole in the back of the controller (Under where the HDMI out goes) and put an SD card slot in
M1ghty Boy Oh yeah so you can easily add and remove the sd card
For exactly that reason yes
I cant fuckung wait to go to my friends house and say
"Hey wanna play super Mario kart?"
And pull out this fucking controller
Man i wish i could make something like this. Shame i have no soldering skills. But if i could i would.
For v2 you could make it wireless per wifi.
retropie can be possible in rb pi 3 and do the same without the controller?
Maybe I can find any USB wired controller big enough to fit that kind of raspberry pi zero from any thrift or computer store.
On the thumbnail, I saw a controller to HDMI, does it work with Elgato?
just look in you network folder on your pc and it should be there next to your pc ..quite easy to access my pi with out typing //retropi
how hard was it fitting the boards and put wires in?
This controller method will work with any controller right?
do you need any custom set up script to use the controls?
i don't get how the gamepad is connected to the pi. can u just shorten the cable and connect it to the pi?
Steam Inhome streaming over android would work nicely in this case! I would love to see a video you doing this! :D
Hey mom can we get a console
No son we have console at home
Console at home:
I have made this too with a battery
I upgraded the term, "plug and play".
Its like a plug and play toy.
+Electronic Grenade of you *really* wanted to be the GOAT, then you should add the "Smart HDMI" thing, so it powers it on when you change the TV's input to it....! :D
I could not understand how did you connected it to the TV.
Nintendo: WRITE THAT DOWN WRITE THAT DOWN
Quick question, can you run java apps on it?
i dont know anything about stuff like this but if u could try and make one that can run playstation games and xbox games
dReW hahahaha nice one
Help me in making motion controlled joystick
Waw mantap
The new Xbox is lit
Does this play Gamecube games though? I'm thinking of doing this too!
I believe it can, but I think you'll have to follow these instructions to get it working retropie.org.uk/docs/GameCube/
Just so you know I haven't tried to run gamecube games on it so I have no idea if the tutorial will work or not.
Electronic Grenade Oh ok, thanks!
Electronic Grenade What controller did you use?

Do some research on if the Raspberry Pi 0 can do. Not everything can play GameCube games. (My PC doesn't run them very well, and the GameCube uses the same processor as the Wii and Wii U.)
podia ter feito melhor, tem cabo hdmi que vem acoplado o cabo usb, assim não precisaria da fita para esconder o fio que passou junto a ele, ficaria melhor a adaptação
could you turn it into a newer console like an xbox one?

How do you charge it
Congrats you made a plug N’ play
Is it possible to do it with a Xbox 360 wired controller.
Does this work with joycons?
Really cool idea! How fast is a raspberry pi compared to a normal laptop? Been thinking of making my own raspberry pi laptop to replacing my aging Asus laptop. It does have an old i3 cpu and 4gb of ram but it is now very slow since it's 4 years old and has some wear and tear. Was thinking of recycling the screen and keyboard though the touchpad is broken. I could use the HDD as well and perhaps the battery. Dunno how to do that though. Would be very interesting indeed.
It's decently fast. But it lags a lot if your doing things such as watching CZcams videos and playing certain games. It's hard to say if it's better than your current laptop, but it might be. It kind of depends on what you want it for.
Electronic Grenade mainly CZcams, research and Ms Office since I'm studying perhaps not such a good device for uni but might be fun to make one someday just as a portable PC.
Yeah, it may not be the best computer for practical use, but it's still a ton of fun to mess around with. I made a raspberry pi laptop a year ago and I really enjoyed the whole process. I would definitely recommend making one.
Tom Brown, MS Office isn't available for the Raspberry Pi, but you can use Open Office/ Libre Office instead.
if its running stock windows then its probably bloatware slowing you down. i would suggest doing a clean reinstall of windows (use disk from microsoft. getting from factory will have the bloatware.) or if you are up to the task you can try linux
I've seen a cartridge turned into a console and now i've seen a controller turned into a console. What's gonna be the next big gaming mod?
0:12 why are you using the D pad?
How did you get internet to the pi? The raspberry pi zero doesn’t come with an adapter and you never added one in the video
The newest raspberry pi zero has a Wifi chip built into it.
Electronic Grenade I did not know that! I’ll have to look into it
You could play Mario Kate on an Xbox 360?
What you do is computer or mechanical engineering?
You're a fucking God
Add a screen and a battery in V2

Can you make a guide just a little more in depth
Same thing
This will actually be consoles in the future. Just a controller.
oh nice computer you got here, can i have it?
Is IQue 2?
you made a plug-and-play console
make one with a battery and a screen
Try it with a battery and a Pi 0 2 W
Make one with a battery!
I did not know there where speakers in a controller
Entirely custom
What's next? How to turn a a Piece of pie into a rasberry Pi Console?
He just made a plug and play.
You didn't have to hotglue your solder connections..
