- Spiders are famous for making us jump, but the tables are turned as scientists have recently trained a spider nicknamed Kim to jump on demand! How Kim was trained? Why? And what novel insights this research has allowed? In his talk Mostafa will tell you all about it.
Who said that nature and technology can’t help each other? Mostafa, innovative research leader in aerospace engineering at The University of Manchester, is seeking to understand how insects locomotion can help us design the next generation of micro-robots and how advanced engineering techniques can help us better understand insects behaviour.
With a sustained track record in researching aerodynamics and designing micro air vehicles, he has made significant contributions to our understanding of insect flight, and has recently developed a broader interest in designing insect-inspired micro-robots by bringing through biological inspiration together with engineering practicality.
Mostafa was featured on BBC news and had radio interviews with BBC radio 5 and talkRADIO. His research has attracted global attention including BBC, Nat Geo, The Telegraph, The Times, France 24, Le monde, Der Spiegel, Fox News, Forbes and NewScientist.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Kim is adorable. I love spiders so much. Hope she had a good retirement after working so hard for them.
This turned out to be way more interesting than I expected.
If they're training micro-robots to hunt down pests, there won't be anybody left on CZcams comment pages.
It’s totally safe to produce jumping predator spider bots!
It seems totally safe to teach spiders to jump on command as well! LOL
Mary Beth Arnold haha yeah soon mutated spiders will „drive“ Kids to school on their back ... completely safe, trust me :D
spider inspired micro robots sounds like a plot for a horror sci-fi.
Wow, that footage is astonishing. Thank you for the contributions.
This is an interesting idea but I just want them to be able to differentiate between mosquitoes and flies, and ladybugs, bees and butterflies
I really enjoyed this interesting topic!
this is brilliant for the content as it is, leaving the accent regardless of what you think about this. i love this channel, wow.
Sounds like fun training spiders and robots ! Very elegant and be cool to learn more about future applications .
I don’t care if he’s Russian or not
His accent is freaking amazing
...why would you care?
Adarsh Shahi He’s Egyptian
That what I said about her but she cries reaches for me even it's all good though Idk but i must go believe buzz lightning
@@THELANKANCOMRADE His name and look is Persian. Are you sure he's Egyptian?
SAHM Yes, he was one of my aeronautics lecturers at the University of Manchester 😆
I am listening the ted talk because of improve my english and to motivate muself
Thanks ted
Thanks Kim for that Tedtalk! I always learn something new from these!
kim only jumps, not talks
@@slumberstudio4757 lol lowkey
Thank you
I learned spiders had an underappreciated intelligence when i saw the Utube video of the spider allowing a human to scrape a sticky residue off his legs.
This is amazing! However, I can't avoid the thought that this could be used for spying on people unawares. That disturbs me. If it weren't for that I'd be all on board.
Great!
I was in the comment section for those sudden spider video’s ugh! holding my screen Tilted they jump to KILL!
Thank you for this incredible content! It inspired me to change my life. I’m telling about my transformation in my vlog
_"Spiderman: Hold my Beer🍺"_
Kim is adorable
Miss Muffet jumped, too.
If he was an actor, he’d be the villain
Making robots to kill anything is a horrible idea...
Great idea, great robots. But why ONLY 4 legs? There should be some optimality, or evolution would not have kept all 8 legs...
MathAtFA If i remember correctly, evolution only eliminates things that reprimand but leaves alone what doesn’t hinder. This is to say that we humans still have pinky toes, appendixes, wisdom teeth, etc etc. We don’t use any of those but evolution didn’t have a reason to eliminate them really.
Reads title...
Ohh, this bout to fu*k my head up🤯
Clicks..
I believe this video is mislabeled. The subject has more to do with micro-robots than with spiders. Perhaps both topics could be incorporated. "Jumping Spiders to Micro-Robots."
He has the perfect requirements to become a super villian. A strong eastern accent and knows how to control creepy insects we are all afraid of
Regardless, a great guy!
Jumping spiders 🕷 pets are awesome 😎
Lol AI spider web galaxy seed? Infinity?:.) + Ai Anthills humans Ski the slopes '•.and bounce the webs
Just need to download its abilities even these spiders are subject to copy right
✋ Out of Pocket please
kim possible
Lmao
Like he says at the end. He wish to fulfill and accomplish this mission in the way to get a lot of applications. At the beginning he said, spider is a predator, therefore it is better than all other jumping animals because they are jumping to run away from a danger. It is not what he wants. So, seems like his group are paid by the army. One of the applications shall be to be used by the army. A predator-spider-robot which can jump and kill an enemy. Am I the only one to have sniffled this idea? Or was it done purposely?
Kim Jump-Un
I got that spider phobia thing.. I hate em. I prefer jumping on the road on a vehicle rather getting a spider jumped on me

Jumping spiders are the cutest!
heather haze you have to be white
@@billglee7527 what does that have to do with my comment?
