The pessimist complains about the change in the wind; the optimistic expects it to change; the realist adjust the sails. When we started our business, we had nothing. Yet that didn't stop us from achieving success. House? No. We were living in our car. Let me share with you our story. We own a cookie shop business in our college town. When we first started it, we were living in our car with very little direction, just a huge passion to be successful. We just graduated college as well. We started a cookie shop out of a local bagel shop in their off hours at night. We were living in our car in the parking lot of the shop at the time with my boyfriend, Bran. It was a crazy experience but it worked! We became a success! And how we have our first storefront location (a second launching soon!) We started it to fund a year long backpacking trip around the world and to be successful while living the life of our dreams.
What a wonderful, inspiring talk! Thank you, Marjolein! My wife and I, who live in Western New York, are on this path and proud of our progress. We live very frugally and save a lot. At 67, I am getting the education I always wanted through MOOCs and books, but working online with great clients in Holland and Germany. My 59-year-old wife is still working in a factory, so we have two old cars, and we live in an energy inefficient house (that we happen to like) because it's in a wooded suburban neighborhood with deer, turkeys, foxes, and squirrels, and close to everything we need. In time, we plan to live in a small (if not tiny) house in just such a village as yours, with some friends, to have one electric car or just use Uber, and to have chickens and animals so that our grandchildren, when they arrive, can scrabble in the dirt and build healthy immune systems. I mention all this because it seems to us that people can move gradually toward a better, more responsible and loving world according to their own rhythm. I have noticed some enthusiasts pursuing minimalism with the gusto and efficiency that others would apply to getting ahead. I applaud your relaxed, caring, and tolerant telling. The problem is in the US, Tiny Houses are illegal in most cities.
Rika Probably because the banks don’t like it because then people don’t take out expensive mortgages that make the banks more money.
Here in Ireland people have started living in log cabins at the end of gardens or on a small site they bought and councils have tried to ban them or make them get planning permission which they don't need of they're under a certain size as most are. They don't want people living in them as the banks don't get to fleece people for mortgages.
Same in the Netherlands where she's from, way too many rules. So people started to take initaitive and communicate with municipalities to try to start tiny house communities that are temporary. Municipalities have the right to 'ignore/allow' this way of living for a certain amount of time and then after a few years they have to find another spot. Every year it gets easier because there's a high demand. setting up one of these communities is a lot of work and collaboration and it often takes several years until they get permission or hear a definete no. It's mostly on abandoned ground that the municipality has trouble with selling, there's very few of those here. so they rent it temporarily to tiny house owners and kick them off the property once they can sell it. There is a lack of housing here and lack of space for new houses, so they can't ignore this movement.

In South Africa we are so spoiled with big houses and gardens.When we have to downsize later in life we really suffer to get used to smaller living spaces and to let go of possessions gathered over years.

As someone with hobbies, I use my "lots of stuff" daily. Yes, it does make me happy. Plus, my mom and I both work from home (no commuting carbon) and my husband's desk is in my office too. Dad cooks family meals in the kitchen we remodeled many years ago when we first moved in and we eat meals together. We're not downsizing. We're going to build an apartment on top of the garage so my husband and I have somewhere to raise children. A full-sized house should be filled with people. My husband and I are able to live close to our friends without falling into debt by living with my parents. On top of that, we invited a friend from high school who we found out has been homeless for a while to live with us, and this isn't the first time we've helped out someone who has fallen on hard times. We wouldn't be able to do all those things in a tiny house.

@@OlyaParis I am from Waitomo New Zealand I live in the countryside and it's beautiful there's no big cities around me the sheep and cows the idea we need to live in little spaces while the rich in elite live in mansions it's just ridiculous shipping containers are much cheaper alternative and they don't apply us living like little rats

Simple Rule Before I get one new possession I get rid of two
That's unsustainable, eventually you'll be alone with the one most recent possession.
Marjolein, you also should have told about "finding out stuff" - and days without water or washingmaschine, it is actually not simplicity you live with, ya in stuff but it is new ground and some people just cannot live with constant struggle, that is what they want to get rid off, too.

Her neighbours are a family with children. So some people actually can.
You has a lot of excuses and assumptions for not getting started yourself.
By using "rich" you mean you can't do what Marjolein has done.
You can choose to become rich. Work a lot and really hard - and - don't waste your money.
If you do that, you can do like Marjolein, own a house and be debt free at the same time.
Hot tip, Don't save the money on your bank account: It's like loosing money. Invest them in property - which is the safest way of getting good interests (typical 6% of your investment).

Don Kapsalon then you totally missed the point. The point of the tiny house movement is to build your own home that has the amenities you need. No one needs a 5 bedroom 4 bath house that’s 3000 square feet. My dad is the youngest of 8 he grew up in a 3 bedroom 1 bath house that’s under 2000 square feet. The point isn’t to live in the smallest space possible. The point is to live intentionally
@Don Kapsalon LOL, shed with a bed. I live in an old farmhouse with 6 bedrooms and....it's falling apart. If I could afford to I'd build a 'shed' to house my bed. It'd need to be 60' x 250' or larger and with generous sized living quarters on one end. And then the outbuildings....3 (or more) 60x400 to house my uh, stuff. I live on an Iowa 10 acre acreage (farm) but I no longer farm.

Why is it that when a student rents a room nobody asks this or when you rent a small appartment. There's lack of student housing where she lives so if she wants to move she can move and sell the house to a student that needs it, no big deal. Nobody is making a big deal about moving out of an appartment why make a big deal out of this. You can never predict the future so why live differently than you desire just in case.
I am so glad my upbringing was much less prejudiced!

Thank God I quitted meat 30 years ago when a decided to live green and I feel myself as a light person and connected to nature. Not only devastation of the environment but also killing animals that are entitled to live as us.

I think what would make me happy for a home is definitely bigger than a tiny house, but it doesn’t need to be anywhere near as big as many of my grandparent’s houses
I think is all about the space you need, thanks to how small technology is getting you can almost cluter everything in a room and still have space for more

Tiny houses are the way to go but like solar power, it is not welcomed in the big U.S. cities.

@Don Kapsalon i somewhat can understand you, then again, due to a fire, you didn't have the control to decide what to stay and what not. The process of conciously choosing what things you want to have in your life, because they support you or uplift you is not to be underestimated! The less things you have, the less things you have to care about, because each thing will need some portion of your energy to take care of it and if you have many of them, that means there's a lot of either time, space, money and/or attention you have to put in for it to be around you.
Don Kapsalon you have to respect that a lot of people value experiences and people over possessions. I think the idea of downsizing goes beyond that sentiment though. Square footage does not equal functionality. The push should really be towards thoughtful and sustainable design. It’s not about getting rid of the things you love, it’s about creating a space that has no cluttered and unnecessary excess.

Living in a tiny house is probably fine if all you want to do for the rest of your live is to talk, think, and preach about how great living in a tiny house is. She reminds me of people with vegan or intermittent fasting or some other extreme diets, who do nothing bit think, talk, or preach about their diet all day. Also, the "I need less money so I work less" argument does not work very well in many jobs that do not let you scale down your hours so easily.

Also most tiny houses are in communities so they are never alone even people living on their own in a tiny house are not completely alone. Also why rob a house with just few possessions in it, most people living in a tiny house are not rich.
