The Secret Life of Dogs | Julia Espinosa | TEDxUofT

  • Julia Espinosa challenges the anthropocentric view of how nonhuman animals sense and perceive the world, using domestic dogs as an example. Humans often view dogs as little humans. Yet, they are vastly different in some sensory abilities, such as sight and smell. By critically examining our assumptions about animal abilities, we can change how we view ourselves as well as our relationships to other animals. Prior to her PhD studies, Julia obtained an MSc in Animal Biosciences from the University of Guelph and has worked as veterinary assistant and dog trainer. Julia’s background in neuroscience, animal welfare, and dog behaviour have given her a unique position from which to investigate questions about animal cognition. Initially motivated to study animal minds in preparation for a career in veterinary medicine, she transitioned to psychology to focus on understanding the evolutionary origins of cognitive processes and emotions, particularly in man’s best friend. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Human beings are inherently dualistic , identify as a self and see all else as other. Dogs are inherently non dualistic and identify as a collective self - we are one. This is the true beauty of dogs, their Buddha nature.

    I'm a dog behaviorist..I like to say a dog has the learning capability of a 2 yr old child with a conscious of a teenager. The example I like to use.. If you are sitting at a table with your dog and you have a piece of cake in front of you and there is nothing in front of the dog. You tell the dog "No" as he tries to take your cake. He understands "No". ( Dogs like a 2 yr old child, can understand the meaning of 2 or three ,letter words or very short phrases). Then you turn around and can not see your dog. Your dog knows and understands that your no longer watching him( a 2 yr old does not yet understand this concept) A teenager knows when ur not home he can get away with things cause your not watching. So the dog will sneak quietly and grab your piece.of cake

    When I was young , I will never forget the first book I read from cover to cover and I laughed, cried everything a book should do . & it was called Emma about a guide dog for a woman (sorry )(I can't remember the woman's name) 1 day the dog pulled her another way , she had to follow, thankfully, the dog knew the station or lights ?( weren't working )& successfully took her owner to the right place . The dog knew , she was a great guide . She must of been really good/great , because since I have,
    loved many pets and connected with them all. Their all characters. As I get older , the last furbaby I rescued and really we rescued eachother in more ways than we can imagine . Our pets tell us so much
    Thanks for sharing

    This reminds me of back when I used to have 2 dogs, if I came home and one of them did something and I would start "interogating" them, one of them would always look guilty, but the other only sometimes and other times would act completely normal as if nothing happend. I often wondered, if she was actually feeling guildy when she was the one who did it and knew she was fine, when she had nothing to do with it...

    The experiment is too simple in my opinion. There are dogs that showed guilt like behaviour after destroying something, but before they were scolded for it. I would agree its still because they know what theyve done will anger the humans, but at least its more complex than that

      @ChrisHillOnline Před 5 lety +10

      Do people really feel guilty when a cop pulls them over even if they've done nothing wrong? They might feel anxious or nervous, but not guilty - that I assume is the same idea she is trying to convey

    • @ObjectiveMedia
      @ObjectiveMedia Před 5 lety +2

      Chris Hill anxiousness/nervousness is a sign of guilt. Or at least could easily be interpreted as such.

    • @ChrisHillOnline
      @ChrisHillOnline Před 5 lety +5

      @@ObjectiveMedia sure it could be, but more likely anxiety or nervousness would come from uncertainty about an impending outcome - remember this is in response to someone being pulled over by a cop and NOT knowing the reason why... This type of response, from everything I've read, is built into our biology...

I raised a dog and we had a really really close bond and if I would get this dog all excited and aroused up in a good mood all hyper and then I would smell the gland and his neck. It would literally give me a euphoric high but the feeling was an overwhelming feeling of love but it was a physical high.

My 18yr old son can parade his friends into my house and when there are friends that I don't quite trust he wont let them near me. when his friends that I like he is real chill. There is one person I know who stole stuff out of my bedroom my dog will bite him when he comes over. I like the fact that if I feel in danger he goes right into protection mode. I believe my dog feels guilt probably by my emotions when I discover his miss deed. Dogs are vary intuitive .
