- This week, Alfredo was able to leave the ring to go for a walk around the back acreage of the farm for the very first time. Alfredo is a 16hh, 14 year old standardbred who retired from racing in December and is working towards his new career as a riding horse.
Awe! What a good boy. Glad it was a relaxed first ride out. My heart horse was a Standardbred. 🥰
He's really such a good egg 🥰
He's such a good boy 😍 and seems to have really taken to ridden life.
He's really impressive, he hasn't put a foot wrong!
awesome video, thank you! may I ask you please, how did you teach him to come to your call? :) I am having hard time to take my standie mare from the field. thank you in advance!
Fredo kind of came that way - I'd only had him a few weeks when I took this video.
My other stb, cricket was hard to catch, but now he comes when called after many years and a lot of patience.
I call them in to feed 2x a day, and sometimes more often if I need to get them out of the way, so I'm calling them over for food or another thing they like way more often than I do to ride!
Thank you for your reply! So its all up to the horse in the end, I was confused because the horses I had (for a lease) before I got Luna would come any time after a call! Thank you and love watching your videos! ❤️
I have a 501C3 Standardbred rescue in South Carolina USA. Can I post your training videos on my FaceBook page? I am trying to bring awarenes about how versatile and intellegent Standardbreds are. I sure would appreciate it
Yes, of course!
@@ColleenNolanTran Thank you!
Hi, I have an OTSTB that I have been working with for over a year now on the trails. We are at a barn with trails right off the property and every time we go out he will “whiny” to his friends as soon as I take him deeper out on the trails. We’ve done the trails around the property numerous times for a year but he still gets very anxious and then on the way home will start to be very forward. He has good brakes and listens well but not sure what else to do about the anxiousness.
This is such a great question! It's a little difficult to answer without the full picture of what exactly he is doing when he is anxious and how disruptive it is.
If it never rises beyond "annoying" behavior (the whinnying kind of gets my blood pressure up, but its harmless) I'd just ignore it! Make sure you're talking to him as you go, maybe start asking him for what I call "thinking exercises". So for my horses, I usually hack on a loose rein, but if they start asking anxious, we'll start doing some lateral work at the walk. So I ask them to come on the bit and leg yield around. Another thing you can do is give them a specific task like circling around trees or stepping over branches. Anything to slow them down and make them think!
Last tip - try going just a smidge outside of your horses comfort zone at a time and slowly expanding their area of confidence. Dealing with anxiety/barn sour/buddy sour behavior is so hard! Good luck!
Thank you so much for all the tips! I also just watched your leg yield video so I will be teaching him that as well. 🥰
@@gubrn4171 good luck! Let me know if you have any questions ☺️
