Standardbred Retraining: Settling an Anxious Horse on the Trails
Today, Alfredo and I are demonstrating some of the best tips and tricks I have for settling a nervous horse on a trail ride. While Alfredo himself is not an anxious type, I have worked with many more nervous types in my retraining work and Alfredo helped me demonstrate some of the best coping strategies I've found.

Standardbred Retraining Vlog: Improving the leg yield

This week Fredo and I worked on improving our leg yield. At the walk, I find that Fredo can shoot off to the side and push through the outside shoulder. In order to improve the leg yields, he needs to move off my leg, but stay between my reins. I find that I have a tendency to forget my rider position as soon as he has a hard time, so part of today's ride was focusing on staying correct in my p...

Most of the time, when you have to scratch at the last second, your horse pulls a shoe or comes up lame. But this week, I lost my childcare at the last second and opted to scratch rather than attempting to bring my daughter to the show. Standardbreds are lovely horses with quiet and trainable temperaments, but I would say it really depends on the individual horse, what your experience is and what you're looking to do with them! Standardbreds are often big movers and many times completely unstarted for riding after their racing careers, so it really depends!

    Have you ever considered if he is struggling with some anxiety and tension in his body? Fredo reminds me of my gelding, an ex racer as well. Whenever my gelding is dealing with tension, he has a really hard time staying with me and not getting rushy. And in those moments, it can actually be counterproductive for me to try and slow him down as either a, he is not capable of slowing down, and b, it can actually build the tension further. Its the same concept with a person experiencing anxiety; if you try to help them come back down before their body is ready for it, you may accidentally send that person into an even tenser state. And of course, I do not know your horse and it looks like you are doing your best for him. I respect that. Just thought I would share my experience and learning with my gelding as food for thought. Good luck!

    • @ColleenNolanTran
      @ColleenNolanTran Před 9 dny

      That's a very valid question! I do think he gets anxious when he loses his balance, which causes him to speed up, which makes him lose his balance, which makes him get anxious. Kind of a vicious cycle. I like to ask him to slow down because letting him open his stride without fixing the balance doesn't help his anxiety - slowing him down and rebalancing him does. But I do know your point, especially with a hotter or anxious type horse, you have to be careful about bottling the anxiety and make sure they have an outlet! Good luck with your guy :)

    Hi, I have an OTSTB that I have been working with for over a year now on the trails. We are at a barn with trails right off the property and every time we go out he will “whiny” to his friends as soon as I take him deeper out on the trails. We’ve done the trails around the property numerous times for a year but he still gets very anxious and then on the way home will start to be very forward. He has good brakes and listens well but not sure what else to do about the anxiousness.

    • @ColleenNolanTran
      @ColleenNolanTran Před 15 dny

      This is such a great question! It's a little difficult to answer without the full picture of what exactly he is doing when he is anxious and how disruptive it is. If it never rises beyond "annoying" behavior (the whinnying kind of gets my blood pressure up, but its harmless) I'd just ignore it! Make sure you're talking to him as you go, maybe start asking him for what I call "thinking exercises". So for my horses, I usually hack on a loose rein, but if they start asking anxious, we'll start doing some lateral work at the walk. So I ask them to come on the bit and leg yield around. Another thing you can do is give them a specific task like circling around trees or stepping over branches. Anything to slow them down and make them think! Last tip - try going just a smidge outside of your horses comfort zone at a time and slowly expanding their area of confidence. Dealing with anxiety/barn sour/buddy sour behavior is so hard! Good luck!

      Most of my horses are shod, so I use my Cavallo entry level boots. I actually had them on hand for when my horses pull shoes, and had been putting them on Fredo until his feet toughen up or I decide to put shoes on him. I actually forgot to put them on for this ride though and I'm not sure they'd be the best option for out on the trails. For my bit, I just have him in a basic double jointed snaffle. My other standardbred has a slightly fussier mouth, he goes in a nathe.

    Because you are having regular lessons, one thing you could do while riding alone, is to talk to yourself and tell yourself all the things that your instructor would tell you. Basically, give yourself a lesson with the sort of information that your instructor would give you. For a horse who has been under saddle for such a short time, Alfredo is doing very well.
