    Just for clarity, Saturday Night Live has had roughly the same format since it started in 1975. It's mostly sketches, but every week has a guest host (whatever entertainer has something to promote that week) and a musical guest. There's a cold open sketch that is normally related to the national political news that week. Playing a president is a big honor for comedians from Chevy Chase playing Gerald Ford in the 70s to Alec Baldwin's Trump (I forget who is doing Biden now). That sketch ends with someone or everyone yelling "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" Cue credits, followed by a monologue by the guest host (the first was George Carlin and it is still available online. Normally there is then a taped segment, often a commercial parody. And then a few sketches, the first musical guest performance, and then Weekend Update, the news desk parody that Che and Jost do now. It's been hosted by many performers over the years from Chevy Chase to Norm MacDonald, Tina Fey with both Amy Poehler and Jimmy Fallon as cohost, Seth Meyers, etc. Then it's more sketches and a second musical guest performance. It runs an hour and a half with commercials. Huge proving ground for many of the biggest comedy stars of the last half century.

    I NEVER miss this show. It's a weekly sketch show on Saturday Nights (obviously), These guys are the writers of the show, this sketch is called "Week-end Update". When Colin Jost read the joke about Scarlette Johanson, it's funny because Colin and Scarlette are married in real life. It debuted in 1975.

    This is "Weekend Update" a long-running segment within SNL. The first anchor was Chevy Chase in 1975. Jane Curtain followed him and the segment has always been quite popular. • @ToniMcGinty
    @ToniMcGinty Před 8 měsíci +9

    Colin Jost and Michael Che are the head writers at SNL. This segment, Weekend Update, is usually on after the musical guest's first performance. It's a mock news show and the cast or host often feature in character to be interviewed, or have their own segment. This swapping of jokes usually happens once or twice a year. As it to be expected from a show created from scratch every week, some SNL episodes are weaker than others. But, especially under these guys (previous Update anchors include Chevy Chase, Tiny Fey, Amy Poehler, Norm MacDonald, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers), Update rarely fails to deliver. Che has a running joke about Jost being the whitest man ever, as thus has to be racist, which is why he makes him say those things. The other avenue of comedy is making fun of Scarlett Johansson, Jost's wife (who often appears in sketches as Ivanka Trump).

  • @avtomatt554

    SNL is a comedy sketch show. This is only one segment called "Weekend Update." It's a weekly staple of the show, and has been consistently funny since the show first started. A lot of legendary comedians have hosted it. Also, Che wrote a few jokes about Scarlett Johansson for Colin to read, as Scarlett is Colin's wife. Everyone has their opinion about SNL and what era was the best/worst. In my opinion it's never been terrible, but it's definitely had its ups and downs. I'd say the 80's/90's era was the best, but I was a kid in the 90's, so rose-tinted glasses and all. Also, not all of these were joke swaps. They only do that once or twice a year. The latter half of these were just regular jokes I think.

    Useful context: SNL is a comedy/variety show, where high-profile celebs often appear in satirical parody sketches, sometimes as themselves, sometimes opposite an SNL cast member playing the celeb - one example is Kate McKinnon, while playing Hillary Clinton, went into a bar where the bartender was actually Hillary.
    Weekend Update is just one section of the show, set up as a parody of the news. Colin Jost and Michael Che (pronounced Shay) present this section which sometimes has guests, and they often (typically at Christmas) do the blind joke-swap segment. Che usually writes horrifically racist jokes, leaving Colin absolutely mortified!
    One more piece of context - Colin is married to Scarlett Johansson, so he often has to read jokes involving her.

Che knocks himself out to make Colin say awful things and poor Colin just keeps shaking his head and telling Che that he's going to get him killed. It might be fun to just do a live reaction to a full episode of weekend update where they're each reading the other's jokes. A full Weekend Update episode is about 13 minutes, so anything shorter is a clip.

A local DC lady comedian and then a guy who apparently is a new person from SNL from last season. I didn't recognize him, but he was fairly funny. Colin and Michael did not duplicate anything from SNL. They may not be allowed to do that considering it's the property of SNL and they're on strike. Colin came out first and did his stand up and Michael Che came last. I have to admit Michael was funnier and I didn't necessarily expect that. I thought they'd be equally funny but Michael was on fire.@@franciet99

    Everyone complaining about how SNL isn't funny like it "used to be" likely don't even give it a chance, and ironically, end up sounding like boomers. Have you actually tried to rewatch some of the skits from the 1970s? They're not exactly gut-busting, or all that consistently good. If the new SNL tried to do the shark/candygram skit, or Roseanne Rosanna Dana (two that are considered "classics"), you'd point to it as evidence that the show has lost its edge.
