  • Anime viewers have always been a semi-cult audience for a medium that never hit mainstream.
But why is that? How come the western world is automatically offput by a lot of the smart ideas japanimation brings to the table?

Alright, so this video is already over a year old. It’s a video I’m not really proud of now, but I still think some points of this video are valid.
Now the thing that I’ve seen a lot of. Is people commenting listing cartoons that don’t follow the norm that I’ve stated in this video. That’s totally okay! But I have to point out, that is not an argument.
Not to be snarky of course, I actually endorse people sharing different opinions on topics. But please refrain from any long lists comments like the ones described.

These can be really good shows but they dont allow for something more in the middle, the only hope i have is Netflix with Castlevania but even then they cant just make 10 animated shows and most of the time the shows they co-produce are with japanese studios

kjcpoper I’ve seen many Disney films. They are good, however they lack the depth seen in several Japanese animated features. Some of my favourites are Your Name, The Boy and The Beast, 5 centimetres per second and Garden of Words. These all can be enjoyed by adults and children alike (the kids may not get the messages but they will still enjoy the story). I’m not saying Disney are bad, I very much liked the Lion King when I was younger, and it has some very somber and beautiful moments, however In the end Disney usually relies on (what I now think are) irritating songs and predictable characters, eg mufasa good, scar bad, Simba angry, ashamed and wanting revenge. I can also argue that a lot of anime characters are 100% good, for example the mother in Wolf children and Nausicaa, however what I particularly like about anime is the stillness of situations and how everyday object can appear beautiful, eg the train in 5 centimetres. Disney are very good at animating characters, however films like your name and weathering with you have such amazing art every frame is a beautiful wallpaper. In Disney’s films, where can you find a film as joyous as My neighbour Totoro, as melancholy and Grave of the fireflies or as fantastic as Your Name. Disney is a good starting place for animation, however it seems the Japanese are spearheading a new wave of masterpieces for more maturer audiences.

Here is what an article says about Walt Disney that I think is very telling:
"At one point in the documentary, however, son-in-law Ron Miller recalls Disney screening To Kill a Mockingbird for his entire family and declaring, “Boy, that was a helluva picture.” Then he lamented, “I wish I could make a picture like that.”
Even Walt Disney, it seems, was aware of his restrictions."
I think this goes back to what you were saying about animation being something that's either for kids or an adult comedy like Family Guy or South Park. For many people, it feels like there is no in-between, where animation can be for adults AND also be taken seriously. I think Anime has closed the gap that Disney himself wishes he could have filled.
But yeah, this was a great video. It deserves way more views. Anime as an art form is severely under-appreciated. I think showing a newcomer something like Erased, Violet Evergarden, Steins;Gate, Madoka Magica or Fate/Zero would really show them that Anime can be deep, mature, creative and thrilling, without having to resort to sexual content.

I highly appreciate the medium and I often even hesitate starting a series I know will be good because animation and a good story hits me in all the right ways as an art medium, which usually ends up making me waay too emotionally involved :.)

One huge advantage western animation has over Easter animation is the production process.
In the west, actors usually record lines and then animators come in and animate the performances. This allows the actor’s performance to inform the animators’ decisions regarding animating character acting.
Most anime on the other hand is animated before actors record their lines, so the actor is limited to the poses and mouth flaps. Just comparing shows, characters in western cartoons move through way more poses and positions than anime characters. The animators take the voice lines and animate the character accordingly. In most anime shows, only the physicality is captured, that being technical animation like walking or picking something up. Rarely is there real character acting, animation that truly captures the feelings and emotions of the character on-screen, like subtle hand flourishes and shifts in weight to supplement the voice actors.
Animated movies in the west have mastered character acting; if you want to get hired for a company like Disney or dreamworks, your reel needs to focus heavily on character acting, rather than pure action and body mechanics that you would need to display to get hired for an anime studio.

i've always wanted to find a platform or somewhere to talk more about this, because i feel like it is important to my future (anticipated) career path. i've wanted to create my own animated series for a long time now, but with themes that are mature and meant for teens or even adults to watch (like attack on titan) but as someone from the us, my options are kind of limited. animation in the west is more corporation based, as compared to japanese anime, where mangakas get basically full control over their content, so it is hard to get your individual vision here unless you want like 10 other people collaborating with you and giving their ideas until it's not a work of your own anymore. i've considered the possibility (impossibility) of moving to japan and becoming a manga artist there, hopefully get noticed, and have my content published as an anime. But I also thought that, as an american, it would be very difficult to learn the japanese language by yourself without the help of a teacher as well as balancing other things in life like school. This leaves me with only the option of remaining in the us, maybe first getting my work published through a graphic novel? or online platform like Webtoon and hoping someone will notice and want to make a animated series out of it. That itself may be a problem if they decide my content isn't "child-friendly" enough because I don't want to censor any mature themes in my story. If I try to skip the graphic novel part and build an animation from scratch I might not reach the target number of audience I want because in the US animation is generally meant for kids so it won't be well received.
Wow I sound really presumptuous but I really just have no idea what I want to do going forward and I feel like I'm wasting my time if I don't do something to reach where I want to be. Thanks if anyone reads this comment and responds to help me.

I have yet to see an animation as good as Spiderman into the Spider-verse. I love both eastern and western animation, but in terms of fluidity, anime doesn't hold up as much. They use it sparingly for certain sakuga scenes to hype up action scenes, but outside those you are left with lots of still frames and panning shots and recycled facial expressions.
Say what you will about Pixar and Disney, but they definitely have better animation due to how much time they put into their projects. I love anime movies as well and excited to see Belle.
I am so over most modern anime designs. The character designs are over the top, the clothes don't make sense, the faces all look the same with little to no variation to height and body shape. It is like looking at soulless dolls. Exceptions being anime like Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho, Demon Slayer, and Beastars who break out of that mold.

The plot was interesting enough to watch till the end, so what I would say is Disney started animation but didn't want to change they way they did things because they are to concerned about how much money they'll lose and how many fansa they'll anger. But would it help if I said I've watched EVERY single of those shows?! They're AWESOME. But think about it, those shows have all had trouble thriving creatively DUE to the western standard for cartoons.
-Batman animated got huge complaints from parents used to cartoons being kids shows.
-Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch has publicly admitted to hating Disney for micromanaging the show to "keep it pg" (they couldnt even have an episode about spin the bottle or a scene with cookies with tiny pentagrams on it)
-Samurai Jack HAD to be resurrected by one of the ONLY Adult cartoon sites in the west in order to get the creative freedom they needed for season 5
And Star vs The Forces of Evil was almost downsized by Disney after receiving backlash from parents claiming it's "too progressive and liberal with gay kisses and hints at transgenderism".
Sorry btw, you just seemed pretty interested in the topic so I allowed myself to go on a bit of a rant to at least explain my point of view ;)

Disney and Max Fleischer are the main reasons why we have anime the way we do today. The creators of both modern manga and anime were greatly inspired by those 2 companies, and also by American comics 💭. See, earlier manga looked a lot more like classic Chinese Imperial art, until Americans started bringing their popculture over to Japan 🗾 and then the Japanese 🏯 really loved the style and tried to recreate it. They hadn't had the same skill at first, but over time they made it into their own.

    Disney didn't fail western animation...
It seems like the world of anime and western animation are combining. Look at the newly released "Belle" which fuses both styles and is worked on by both western and eastern talent.
Luca seemed to borrow influence from Studio Ghibli, Looney Tunes, and stop motion effect from Sony animation (Spiderman into the Spider-verse and The Mitchell's vs The Machines). I heavily enjoyed Onward and Luca as well as Your Name and a Silent Voice.
I think if we cherry picked and zeroed in on Japanese animation, you would see how creatively bankrupt it is. Most of it panders to the Otaku fanbase with lots of recycled characterizations, themes, and animations. It is easy to pick out the best from anime and make it seem like western animation is homogeneous.
Didn't realize you made this some time ago and you seem open to different opinions. I will still leave this up. Hopefully I made myself clear. I enjoy both eastern and western animation very much and passionate about the subject.

Disney movies or western animation overall are not for kids. They're for everyone. Speaking from my own experience, I watched animated films as a kid and found things funny and cute. But when I watch them again growing up, I find art. I look deeper into the stories and characters, appreciate the art style more, and find some subtle message behind in many films (not all, cause there are films not that great). Just because the kids can watch it doesn't mean the adults can'r watch it. And until today, I still can't get why people are saying western animation is falling. Sure, there are more simple and silly films, but there are still decent films. Maybe people look too much into the downside and forget the good things? As for TV shows, I guess the animation quality can't be as good as the movies, but the content? Creative, well done and entertaining to me.
Another thing here, just my personal opinion, I like western animation more than anime. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and respect the Japanese artists who create a very unique and creative animation style, which is anime. When I see an anime show or movie, I see a lot of details and colors that show how much efforts and talent is put into it. But I prefer the western style more. The design of the characters in a Disney or other studio's movie have more differences and creativity and give them more personality. The animation also seems more fluid and expressive to me. But talking about content and storytelling, I think both are awesome. I have watched many decent and amazing anime films and TV shows, and the same with American ones.
So that's what I think. Both Japanese and western animation are amazing and have their own things that make them stands out from each other, and there's no need for us to compare them to find which one is better while we can enjoy both or just one based on our personal preference.

Disney is simplistic. Nice while young but I found as I grew up, that most of their stories are too rushed with character development. So it didn't fully cement my viewing experience as immersive. They're also too formulaic. Not that I even watch anime a lot. I just think Disney is just not that experimental or creative in vision and end up even unintentionally borrowing off other source materials which dealt with themes far more complex and mature than this company did.

Yes, Disney animation is way better because it's 3D, but anime is way better and harder to make than Disney. I really enjoy the variety in art and animation styles in anime, specifically in recent years. It has improved so much and it looks gorgeous. This is just my opinion, but I feel big entertainment companies like Disney have kinda lost the variety, ever movie looks the same and every character looks similar. Also I think I'm just tired of the remakes too. The stories kinda just are repeats of pervoius films and it's sort of boring.
I really liked you're video btw. I appreciate you talking about how animators get treated like shit, that's something that is a huge problem but not many people talk about (to my knowledge) so thank you for that. You made some valid points and I'm happy you actually had a argument instead of just " I like anime better because it's from japan and i want to be cool."

To me, it shows two different yet somewhat similar mediums trying to reach two different audiences, and of those two audiences, one of them includes a subset of poor bastards who see an anime series like Overlord and think it'd be perfect for kids, and then they reach Splat and find out how wrong they were. In the west, we're conditioned early on that cartoons should be short one-off episodes and be lighthearted fare aimed at children, like Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Yogi Bear, and Cinderella. In Japan, they've got Gundam Zeta, Overlord, Goblin Slayer, and Demon Beast Invasion. Their animation often tells a far-reaching story where arcs develope over multiple episodes, where a character dies and doesn't come back. It's more serious in terms of storytelling and aims for a somewhat older audience.

I think the biggest issue here is that a couple of the good Western Animation out there you usually have to look for hard.. And I mean HARD. Well, anime has that issue as well, but it doesn't only suffer from that, but also the fact that not only are they obscure, but are almost unavailable outside of VHS releases, & fan recordings(ALSO on VHS), that format of which is rather notorious for decaying as years go by, essentially meaning that you'll end up getting them not in as good of quality as even a few 70s anime. I know, it sounds rather harsh, but it's sort of a sad truth. Even a few 90s ones are in this state.

I honestly feel like people in the west just have low standarts, when it comes to entertainment. Nowdays, a lot of western animated cartoons on TV are just using the same cheap art style, because of the success of shows like Adventure Time and Regular Show and also adding represantation or sexuality as a character trait, because why not. I wouldn't exaclly call myself an anime fan, but I do enjoy some animes, especialy that have relatable characters and can also showcase good animation and story telling. So I do enjoy anime, if there isn't anything else to watch. And that is a staple nowdays, considering how animation has been lowered after the mid 2000's. We had shows like Samurai Jack, Batman Beyond. Megas XLR, TMNT 2003, Teen Titans, Avatar: The Last Airbender and many other action orianted cartoons in the west, that were also heavily inspired by anime. But nowdays western cartoons focus more on cheaper art styles and unfunny comedies, that it gets rather ridicolous and boring as time moves on. Not to mention I hate the fact that Disney are just remaking their beloved 2D animated classics, because they think live action/CGI is more adult, then anything animation can provide, which is complete bullshit in my eyes. I also don't like that too many animated movies in the west are only CGI. Nothing against CG animation, but for a while it does get rather stale and boring. Atleast with anime, each studio use different animation styles to make their product appealing and memorable as time moves on. The only movie I liked in 2018 was Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and that is because it tried something different, they basicly like combined 2d and 3d animation, which is somethng that hasn't been done before on the big screen, if you count the animated Disney short Paperman that is.
It is kind of crappy how people in the west treat animation like it's total garbage. :/

    1. Anime writing is too often full of melodramatic exposition, and that gets annoying.
    2. When we do action or drama, we prefer to do it live action. Just watch Breaking Bad.
    3. There are plenty of cartoons with an adult audience in mind. It's just that they're mostly comedies.
    4. There is the occasional cartoon here in the west, like say the Spawn HBO series, that would make an anime fan proud.

Yes, but most of them are child friendly. There's seldom an action or drama cartoon made with an adult audience in mind. That's where the live action stuff comes in. If Game Of Thrones were done in Japan, it'd be an anime, but we prefer live action here in the States for some reason.

PG13 implies it's made for teenagers, and R rated films don't go as far as they used to. The Killing Joke for example only implied a rape, but it didn't show it. Even with the images, we didn't really see any of the gruesome details. It was just heavily implied. Deadpool went further in his live action movie than any Batman cartoon does.
I've watched plenty of the Batman animated films. They are good, but I'm not going to pretend that they're something they're not.
I've also watched many of the cartoons you've mentioned, including Invasion America and Aeon Flux. Most of those are a bit boring, kinda slower, and I'd hardly call the writing of them to be adult oriented.
Again, Breaking Bad and shows like it are the standard here regarding adult-oriented writing.

Where they stop a scene in the middle of the action and just start talking about it or how they feel in an annoying and cringe way. Attack On Titan is the worst for this. You know how Disney characters stop the movie to sing? Yeah, anime does that except without the music.
Not all anime, ofc. Legend of the Galactic Heroes doesn't do that, but there are far too many that do.
