Today I extend my thoughts on a comment I made previously in my "Best of Anime 2018" video about the lack of modern classic Anime, since non of you could agree on it in the comments section.

No reason to worry about Classic Anime dying... *_Because even if it does it will be reincarnated as "Isekai Anime."_*
"That Time I Got Reincarnated As A 90's OVA"
stop
Neon Genesis Netflix Remake lol
That's not a good thing.
Facts
I feel like one of the major things holding modern anime back is they don't seem to have an ending. They're all adaptations of ongoing manga/light novels/etc so their endings are usually something along the lines of "stay tuned for season 2" or "read the manga to know what happens." Older shows like Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop were so impactful because they told a whole story - their endings have a sense of finality to them, and their protagonists experience an entire character arc throughout the show.
I think that sort of varies. Most anime are manga or lightnovel adaptations, and only a few actually manage to cover the entirety of the story they're based on, whereas anime originals are much more likely to be complete since the stories are usually designed around a set number of episodes from the outset. I'm pretty sure it's been this way for decades, but the inconclusive adaptations are mostly forgotten, while anime originals and more complete adaptations (that are also good) are remembered as classics. I suspect It's similar to how the '60s are considered a golden age of classic rock, but if you were to go back in time, you'd find the top 40 music was actually filled with garbage that no one even remembers anymore.
There are a lots of finished masterpieces manga that are just sitting alone without any anime adaptations. It those goddamn anime studios only wants to adapted garbage modern lightnovel.
Yep so what u mean it quantity is pushrd instead of quality
That is why some of the best anime ever made are originals. Not based on a story from some other medium (Manga, LN, VN ect ect)
This is a standard tho.
Adaptations, apart from rare (Monogatari series) or specific situations (HxH) are not on par with the original, because they are that, adaptations. Their original medium Is another one and they were written for that medium.
I never got the hype for Fate Zero/UBW as animes. They are good, but they aren't 10/10 or whatever.
The novels, on the other hand, are superb. The issue Is that when you change the format/the medium something gets lost.
Stay Night in particular suffers from this.
It's a big epic, built by 3 different stories which show differenti result and themes starting from the same characters and ideas.
They are NOT different series or products. Reading/watching UBW before reading/watching Fate it's like reading The Two Towers before The Fellowship of The Ring.
You complitely fuck up the internal order and you lose entire backgrounds and events that were needed to understand UBW.
So, it's UBW a classical anime? Mhh, I don't think so.
It's Fate/Stay Night a classical novel? Yeah, It Is. It's one of the most famous and important visual novels. And if you didn't get It from how I am speaking of It, my favourite, together with Higurashi and Steins;Gate

I think you'd be surprised how many old anime "classics" weren't the most popular or most watched of their time, but instead grew more recognized or acclaimed by the wider viewership over time. I think that's the main problem with the thesis of this video, a "classic" won't necessarily be the most popular or watched when they come out.
In the contrary, it's crazy how a lot of animes that came out over the past few years and were exploding in popularity (e.g. SAO, SNK, madoka magica) got gradually forgotten and/or the hype completely died out.
@@Aya-ej2eu all of the shows you mentioned are still well remembered, expect for shit brains.
Aya Attack On Titan’s still pretty popular and hyped, SAO less so but still relevant, but Madoka...yeah.
the interesting thing about gundam is that the show was cut short about 10 episodes and yet it still exploded in popularity and is still continuing
Which shows are you talking about?
the fact Aot is still relevant after being on hiatus for 4 years after season one really says a lot. Man I love that show
as all people should, it's already in my list of upper tier manga, along with bersesrk, vagabond, 20th century boys, kingdom, etc... those that you wouldnt dare put in a rank because of how good they are
Yeah I was thinking the other day how amazing it was that they retained they fanbase and probably even had a bigger fanbase after that.
It will be called a masterpiece by everyone who watches it once chapter 119-122 gets adapted.
Yea too bad there are people who hate on it, saying its overrated prob cus of s1. The foreshadowing ,the details, the character development of eren reiner and their backstories, the plot the history around the world of aot is amazing. So its the soundtrack
it sucks
As someone who grew up on 90's anime, I see a distinct lack of infamy and an excess of sameness. There's a reason why Attack On Titan's, mean spirited shock value alone, is like a breath of nostalgic air. It's infamous and that makes it classic.
Even the weird is a very specific brand of weird nowdays. 90's anime was so diversily weird from berserk to GITS(95), now it's al WTF™
Everyone is either high school brats or isekai.

Just finished watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes and I came here to say: thank you
Is it really as good as the score says it is?
@@NexuroPL Simply put, yes. But LoGH is different from modern shows. It's slow-paced and talks about themes like politics, tactics and strategy (mostly politics, so it's boring 90% of the time). It's not what you would expect from modern day anime. There's a bunch of things the show does well, but if you're not interested in the themes mentioned above it won't be worth getting into.
@@NexuroPL it's the type of show you have to rewind a few seconds multiple times per episode to have the time to take in everything that's said, very big and lots of moving parts

@@NexuroPL the animation is sometimes like a PowerPoint presentation but the greatness of the story really compensate it.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is my favorite work of fiction about an interstellar war ever. I loved it despite a few factors that worked against it, like: the many German character names and the seemingly hundreds of characters were not easy to remember at first, it was more character and less action driven that I was expecting from a "space war" anime, and the classical music score (nice of you to do the same by the way) was not what I was expecting. That said, it still managed to break a large number of my expectations...like there were genuinely good and bad people on both sides of the war. It's way easier to tell a story with a clear bad guy, even if you get people to root for the bad guy...and here the antagonist wasn't as bad as I might expect. It's also rare to see so many background characters get their own arcs so that you can see the effects of the war from so many different perspectives.
In a setting that's built on top of "WW2 allies fight the Prussian Empire in space", it's kinda to be expected to encounter plenty of German names.
German names are actually a + and yeah it's a very character driven anime.
Some idiots nowdays claim the character writing is shoddy because all they can appreciate is over the top anime and the deepest characterwork they've ever encountered is Dostoevsky

They want to avoid fillers that's why they're doing that.
*Laughs in attack on titan*
@@sylphire2021 that isn't the only reason, but its one of them, most manga has more than enough content to make more than 24 episodes. Imagine if FMAB or AoT were 24 episodes..... basically all anime production should have a 48 episode minimum, in my opinion.
I think the main reason is: they budget these shows to only be able to make 24 'quality' episodes..
Honestly bro. Like watching an 11 episode series that is deemed an amazing anime always leaves you wanting more
the thing with alot of light novels and non-mainstream manga is that an anime is created for people to get attracted to its source, not a long-term show that is expected to continue with multiple seasons.

The sensation of discovering a classic, for me it was watching Monster, Monster is the only show that gave me the same feelings I had when I first discovered FMAB, while still being its own thing. @@Joeden88 it is. I’m being serious as a shonen meat rider 🥩
There's a big thing on this topic that hasn't been mentioned by this video, or anyone here, and I find that sorta odd. Basically.....
What did undeniable classics like Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, and Serial Experiments Lain all have in common? The kind of anime that stays with you when you saw them?
.....
They're all anime originals. Hell lets add more modern ones like Gurren Lagann, Last Exile, Texhnolyze, Code Geass, and Magika Modoka while we're at it. Ghost In The Shell can get away with this too because its source material and Stand Alone Complex are basically two very different universes.
Virtually all modern anime today are basically manga and light novel adaptions, die-hard fans know exactly how the story progresses so there's a sizable disconnect between audiences that read the source material and the anime-onlys. Which hampers an anime's staying power the way I see it.
Anime originals completely negate that issue and if they're great, everyone watching is equally invested on an episode to episode basis.
That's besides the fact there's more new anime that has been coming out *_every single fucking year than there was IN THE ENTIRE DECADE OF THE 1990's._* Oversaturation is real and that's modern anime's biggest obstacle. We could have the next Neon Genesis Evangelion that changes anime for the better but it would hardly matter if people can't tell it apart from the hundreds of other recent anime that are on everyone's backlogs.
The current climate for the last decade supports a deluge of LN/VN/Manga adaptations to support a few 'originals' every year or so. It's all about money/opportunity cost and guaranteed sales vs risk on a new property that doesn't sell. "shrugs" It is what it is.
The hardest thing/most expensive thing to do is be creative. So they put all there money in adapting other peoples work because it is more cost efficient and requires less if any at all creativity to do.
I'd argue Kill la Kill fits the bill. It's almost universally regarded as a great work and isn't based on a manga, though we'll see if it's as strong in 15-20 years as Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop are now.
Frankxx is an original and see how that turned out lmao
Completely agree. I was never that big of an anime fan, but I wanted to give up the medium entirely when I realized that most of it is just one big ad to sell the manga, or visual novel, or whatever else is the source material. This was back when Re:Zero finished airing.
Ironicly, what restored my interest is AoT S3 Part 2, it showed me there are still fantastic shows coming out that will have some sort of closure and are focused on actually delivering a great story rather than being an advert for a great story but in a different format.

The lack of modern classic anime:
-too formulaic and oversaturated for any genre that brings in money.
-manga/light novel advertising actively aiming to *not* have a satisfying and impactful conclusion so you buy the source material.
-fans that seem to actively hate on series' other people enjoyed, ensuring there is no consesus on what actually is and isn't quality, impactful anime.

@Nostalgia For Infinity - I'd say it's very possible for a show to be great while not being too unique. Attack on titan is a future classic, it’s not old enough
IT might even become the GOAT
Definitely. People still like giving it a hard time by saying it's overhyped, but it's hard to deny how well it managed to stand on its own.
ya the fact AOT is able to maintain its hype after multiple year long gaps along with the fact that its easily available worldwide on Netflix(though S2 and S3 are still not added) gives it a chance of becoming a classic
because it fulfills the most important criteria- being relevant to anyone and everyone. Like it is something that we all take for granted since every genre is so well defined and mature nowadays we rarely get a "classic" which is but a show that is not bound by any single genre AND the fact that the story it tells is being told from scratch and it has been done so well throughout. AOT has it all, the hype, the depression, the plot depth and epic character development, it could very well be our generation's evangelion. Being relevant for ages requires something different and ingenious. You're immersed in the story the moment you first lay eyes on it, keep advancing through the plot and when you see anything else released in the same decade, its only then you realize that "Wow, I'm surprised no one else has thought of this before!".

Hayao Miyazaki has criticized the modern anime industry as being overly dominated by otaku culture. And to an extent I agree. The imperative to create underage female characters that appeal to fanboys who want to collect as much of their "waifu's" merch has taken over much of the industry's attention. There's some really good shows these days, but SO much of the anime industry is preoccupied in churning out hollow content trying to appeal to the trashiest aspects of otaku culture. And nearly all modern anime have an almost entirely high school age cast. It didn't used to be that way in the past. Having a cast of diverse ages and backgrounds I think can add so much to a story, and help a show connect with a broader demographic.
The thing to remember when talking about classics, is that all the trash around them generally gets forgotten. It's a basic fact of all mediums, the past always seems better because nobody bothers remembering the bad stuff unless it's legendarily terrible.
Goo Lagoon Would you count Mob Psycho in this category?
yet, a show set in those generic tropes still can be great. But i agree with you that its lackluster in terms of diverse settings and characters

9:30 beautifully said: classics exist because we feel the need to look back.
When anime as a genre used to more of a scarcity, well compared to today, due to lack of supply and accessibility, people look back at those good ones. It's the same with movies, to arguably lesser but noticeable extent. "Over-saturation" of shows today is def a good thing on the market and consumers, but it does make the competition more harsh and pressures companies to put revenue above everything else first (RIP Studio Ghibli).
The next time we start to have classics might (and hopefully not) be when anime industry starts to fade away from general consumption. I hope that day never comes, and I hope new classics may still arise even in today's saturated market.

Honestly, probably the closest we have to a modern "classic" is JoJo. It has had such a huge prevalence across not just the anime community but across even general audiences in memes and general cultural influence. It has consistently been of very good to outstanding quality and, Part 5 in the states at least, was hugely popular almost off the bat. I get that it might "count less" per se because the manga came out decades ago, but in terms of the 2012-present anime, I think it would fit the definition of a "modern classic".
I mean true, but Araki is too smart to try and explore themes that would alienate people. Part 7-8 deal with a lot more of heavy stuff, but it’s still a simpler enjoyable series at heart.

What makes a classic is literally just good writing. Delivering genuine human emotion and tackling real problems in a story, that is told in a specific persons vision or perspective. Told in a way where it is believable. Not that the anime has to be realistic, but it has to adhere to the rules defined by its own world to make the world believable and make us actually genuinely invested in the story.
All of the classics have that.
There are some exceptions, but most of these exceptions were memorable because they were genre defining shit no one had ever seen before. Like jojo for example. Anime has turned into its own way of writing, which is probably why it has distanced itself from its audience. You still have some nuggets like terror in resonance or steins gate which I would say is a classic of our time. (Although they're not all the way there, its in the right direction).

"#2: Impact"
*shows footage from the Third Impact*
thank you... i searched for this. had me laughing tho... but #3 should have been impact
I know im way too late for this to matter, but would've been cool if the end just had a list of shows to check out. like, i know some were named in the video, but just a list of Gigguk recommended classics (especially now with covid) would be great
" we used to complain about filler episodes, now we have filler anime" BIG FACTSS
My friend do not forget...
Cory will always be in the house.

Halo theme kazoo instrumental suite starts playing
Well we might actually have a Cory in the house as president lol

@Vier He has descneded into darkness
All those anime game advertisements by youtubers start with some variation of "this game has one of the most [various positive adjectives] combat systems I've ever/recently seen" without fail.
It's hilarious.
Finally someone said it.
Is it just me, or is combat the least important part of an MMO? Or at least, I think Runescape is a better MMO than most and its combat is certainly nothing flashy, even though I think it’s pretty good in its own simple way.
In a similar vein Black Desert Online is often praised for its combat but it just doesn’t do it for me, even though you can own land, furnish houses, fish etc kinda like Runescape it just lacks that charm and longevity.
It actually looks good though I must admit.
the Mob Psycho shoutout had me soooo hyped for Season 3 !!!!
props for the gunbuster love in this vid. people honestly have no excuse with that show- it was anno's dry run for evangelion and you can watch it all in 3 hours. its ending is still the best ending in anime and regularly brings me to tears. plus its still rare to find a mecha show with not one, but two female protagonists. diebuster has its moments but its more akin to FLCL than the show its supposedly a sequel to, never surpassing the original (as you say, classics are never replaced). does have a banging soundtrack though- round table were just on fire in the 2000s with the diebuster, chobits and welcome to the NHK themes
Why does gigguk's anime rants speak to a weebs soul...in some way?
Edit: didn't expect to have many people liked my comment ~uguu~
and tnx fellow degenerates
Because of the *P A S S I O N*
Yup. I get goose bumps from time to time when I'm listening to this guy. To be fair though, I'm a guy who gets goose bumps really easily.

@@loonloon6860 NO YOU!
For those who don't know: he tweeted that he might rescind what he said about the death of classic animes if SnK (Attack on Titans) managed to keep the same quality that Season 3 has brought.
It is only fair to rate AoT upon re-watching the entire series. Season 1 and Season 2 were criticized for character writing and generic plot, but many of these faults are explained in season 3, and based on the manga, season 4. Everything comes together in full circle now, so I'm willing to overlook the faults in S1 + 2 if these faults are actually deliberate on the author's part to express his message and explore the theme. Since the show has not concluded, it remains to be seen whether or not it will become a classic, but as he said, it has all the potential to become one.
There was never a character writing fault only some people maybe like you think so infact it was the questions we get the answers in 3rd part and Attack in Titan is a legendary anime which will be remembered for decades. As it is far beyond Perfection
Aot is considered generic?
Since when? By which idiot?
@@__-yz1ob the characters in the first two seasons, and still to some degree later can be seen as quiet Generic. but that isnt a point against it, many literary and film classics use generic characters, for example, look at Star Wars. the entire series was built to be a generic heroes journey (George Lucas said this himself, its not an insult) and that helped to propel it into being a classic film series. Stock Characters and tropes exist for a reason, and thats because they are effective. Classics are rarely works that pioneer the medium with groundbreaking character studies unless that is all they are, otherwise general audiences get lost and cant follow, and they start to see it less like an amazing series, and more like ... Trainspotting.
@@__-yz1ob By entitled weebs who think any over-hyped anime is automatically bad and generic. I have an entire discord group of frens who are weebs who refuse to watch AoT because it's 'Over-hyped'.
@@Shamrock_74 yea theres a lot, but those watch demon slayer. No hate to demon slayer but its way more popular but i see some hating on aot and comparing it to demon slayer
I'm sure Attack on Titan will be regarded as a classic in the future.
How? with its terrible ending
@@palaninathansanjay5921 It's ending wasn't terrible. Darling in the franxx has a terrible ending. AoT's was just, acceptable
@@sondog5789 Same with Game of Thrones, but it's influence immediately died out cause of it's acceptable ending.
It's acceptable if you compare it to other trash anime but not compared to the really good ones tbh.
For that, It won't get remembered as much as Evangelion, Madoka Magica, Cowboy Bebop, Monster, Death Note, and others.
@@ouranioszefs6989 Yeah, hopefully the anime will have the same ending BUT they give it more time and change just a few things.
@@sondog5789 Tbf the idea that Isayama had is great, the execution was really a lackluster.
I also wished that they put more emphasis on the consequence that Eren needs to have like make it more tragic - trap him in the paths forever or make everyone forget about him. The ending kinda lean towards showing that he is a hero without caring enough about the brutality of his actions - which is the main thing I have problem with.
I used to say, wait 2 season.
And then try to remember what air two season ago.
The one you remembered have the potential to be classic from the personal impact.
I notice it during the great drought of anime where the only series i remember being Bakemonogatari.
