If you want to see another brilliant representation of his vocal ability listen to Cowpoke Western AF session. Very different.
Yes, a totally different sound.
He also speaks in this ! Very good
That would be a great react. Sounds like a completely different person.
cowpoke is one of my favorite songs by Colter. he hits a few "high" notes lol
its a cover
Ok. I play guitar and have for years. Most would screech at his..off tuned guitar. Its tuned perfectly for what he is doing. Very good on a guitar..kick drum and the voice. You can’t accuse him of trying to sound like anyone. He is his own. Absolutely wonderful. As soon as I watch this I watched another one from the same session called Kate McCannon. Wow. Check that one out.
The slightly out of tune sound, the djangly tone it provides imo, is part of the vibe or aesthetic that accompanies not just this song but the entire session. Also I'd like to think it was probably a conscious decision made by him in an attempt to almost method act the character in the song. An out of tune guitar unusually producing an unreplicable rendition kinda aligns with the mythos of selling your soul and the devil gifting you unnatural talent.
It’s standard tuning but with a capo on the fifth fret, which is kind of designed to be a bit out of tune and sound twangy and slappy since the strings are looser than normal. My point is its most definitely intentional that his guitar is out of tune because it does fit so well with his style and what message he wants the song to convey. I actually learned this song, even though i mainly play electric, because i like it so much.
The guitar is very old. That sound is a worn out guitar fret. He makes it part of his music.
Agree 100 percent, this guitar playing is amazing
True talent knows how to play music "incorrectly" to get the sound they want. This is a fantastic example
Colter Wall is one of the few guys left still doing real country. I'd recommend watching him perform the song Bob Fudge, it's another great example of his musical ability. Also loved the video, keep it up!
There are loads playing real country. You just won't hear it on the radio
Kate McCannon- same live session, you have to check out that song he does as well. It makes me melt.
The genuine look of surprise and bewilderment on your face when he started to sing was priceless. Glad you found Colter Wall and enjoyed his music. Recently found him myself. Thanks for another great video.
That's because she got weak in the knee
I love watching people react to him for the first time.
This one, Sleeping On The Blacktop, Cowpoke, Big Iron, Kate McKannon, and probably my favorite, Caroline. It honestly brings tears to my eyes every time.
Caroline is SO underrated.
If you enjoyed this I'd suggest Tyler Childers - nose on the grindstone (OurVinyl session) or Sturgil Simpson - you can have the crown (live at sun King brewery) both hit a similar audience but very different voices and vibes!
Nose on the grindstone is my favorite song of all time! Love Tyler Childers!
Not too shabby for a 19 year old eh. He is cherished big time here in the Canada. FYI He is a real working cowpoke
Colter Wall is so amazing. I'd definitely recommend checking out "13 Silver dollars". He's definitely refined his voice over the years.
I'd love to hear your reaction to his western style songs. He sounds like a completely different performer.
I came here right after watching a guitar teacher’s reaction to the same song it’s crazy to think how talented he is this is all him and it’s crazy loved the reaction!
Greatest one man band I’ve ever heard
He does a good murder ballad as well. Also if you like the bluesy sound check out shakey graves.
Love a good murder ballad
My favorite is watching the face of people reacting to his voice for the first time it's awesome to see
Ooo! A friend recommended him to me a couple weeks ago, but I forgot to check him out so this was a welcome reminder. The dude has an awesome voice. These breakdown videos on your channel are so thoughtful and insightful. Great stuff! 😎
Great reaction!! You should think about trying Tyler Childers next. Completely different but very unique voice. Great story telling too! Lady May & Nose to the Grindstone are sure winners
Fraulein is a great track, and just so happens to feature Colter Wall and Tyler Childers. Good stuff!
You should react to some newer stuff of his. He's really refined his voice since then. He actually looks back at this and is embarrassed of it since he didnt really know how to sing yet, he was forcing it. I think he was 19 or something here. Cowpoke, Bob Fudge or Cypress Hills and the Big Country would he a good representation of where he is now.
was just about to say the same thing lol
Opinions vary, I can't get into any of his newer stuff since he changed his voice.
embarrassed.. hardly.. this is another internet bs rambling that has made the rounds.. Stop it.
@@INDRIDCOLD83 I agree, I love this.
I love his voice too! If you close your eyes and listen I hear an older weathered man whose seen hard troubled times, Johnny Cash like if you will. And that intro to song and the song in general has what I would call a janky, junky, hobo on the railway, story telling feel.
This man is raw, that's why he is good, Amen brother
A masterclass in storytelling through song
KATW MCANNON BY COLTER WALL is in absolute must for you to review. Please!
she was rizzed up the entire session haha
Great reaction Bethany! Definitely a unique sound.
I absolutely love Colter !! Great choice. Loved this video by the way.
Check out Shakey Graves, Roll The Bones. He also has a live performance where he uses a guitar and kick drum, and I think a tambourine. His voice is so incredibly unique, and he plays a lot with varying tempos. It’s incredible to watch and listen to. One of my favorite live recording music videos
Great recommendation. Shakey Graves is another favorite of mine.
Well, you have expanded my horizons on country music. I like a certain style and Colter Wall fits it. For me, it’s George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Dwight Yoakum, Merle Haggard, and Jamie Johnson to name but a few. Loved this song, your commentary and reaction.
I KNEW IT!! I LOVED his song Cowpoke, i KNEW his voice sounder familiar, ive just never seen his face
The only man besides Johnny Cash that makes a woman fall in love immediately with just his voice...that kinda voice makes a woman's knees weak 😅😅😅 FLUSTERED 😂
He sounds like a smokey version of Johnny Cash . I love it !!!
Saw him live in a little place in Athens GA a few years ago - standing by the stage - so cool. Got the t-shirt.
I love how he himself describes his earlier stuff as just "growling into a mic", I guess he didn't know he actually had some chops after all.
Hes got a dip in, thats why hes doin all the mouth stuff shes talkin bout, his voice is just that crazy
Great reaction, colter wall is a true artist, I would recommend COW POKE by him, you get a different vocal sound from this song, plus I gotta say his songs are so well written. 👍🍀
3:08 - For more in the genre, you're looking for Dark Country. (See Blues Saraceno - Evil Ways, Justin Cross - Drink the Water, Heavy Young Heathens - Being Evil Has A Price)
You just really should do most of his songs because he has the most perfect voice I’ve ever heard where he mixes the style of Western old country and blues all together, keeping a kind of Johnny Cash vibe but still with the western twang to it also, he’s from Canada
Your reaction was similar to mine... And now he's ones of my favorites to listen to on a long ride in the mountains on the Harley
I love Colter Wall is a real cowboy hipster. He is bringing back the western theme to country music that has been missing for some time. Please view some of Colter's interview on You Tube. He is very humble and smart.
I think it's cool that you like him.
Yeah, you gotta listen to cowpoke. He’s grown so much and it’s even more incredible now!
Colter Wall. You can’t teach it. Seeing him for the first time next February and I can’t wait.
He's 'throat singing' that mongolians mastered thousands of years ago!
Bowing his head forward, pitching his vocals downward toward the mic, thus allowing a straight unencumbered path out, direct from the throat. I have to use this technique to hit lower tones and notes!
I love ol' brother Colter. I hope you'll react to some more of his songs. His styles really change across his albums. Seem like most "reactors" do this song and no more. He's a real talent, and deserves more attention.
crazy to think he was 19 when they recorded this. his voice sounds like a 60 year old man that's lived a hard life and smoked a pack of cigarette a day. if you want to check out another unique country singer, look at Tyler Childers. i would reccomend "nose on the grindstone" from ourvinylsessions recording.
Oh boy, you melted as soon as he opened up. 😉
Thanks for focusing on this greatly unique Canadian artist. Would also love your take on KD Lang! Possibly "Trail of Broken Hearts"?
You should check out Nolan Taylor. Colter is awesome for sure!
She. Is. Stunned.
i could watch vocal coaches react to Colter all day long
Love your reaction.!! 💯👍👍
Ok @TheVocalyst I’ve got yet another one for you. This artist’s name is Stephen Wilson Jr and he barely opens his mouth at times to sing. So crazy to me to see that. His songs Cuckoo and 1994 are pretty remarkable.
Listen to Cypress Hills and the Big Country. Probably one of my favorites of his
Country music is full of amazing singers, for some reason though it's rare for vocal coaches to react to them. Country music is a whole other world they're missing out on.
I caught you watching! Lol.
Im in love with this woman now. 3 vids in.
I would really love to see your reaction to the band BAD FLOWER, the song GHOST. there is an acoustic version out there. Please, the song has a serious subject, and I think this band does not get enough credit it deserves. Thanks 👍
Colter Wall makes some interesting yoddle like sounds in his song called Cowpoke.
He was 17 when he recorded this btw.
Interesting darling I love colter wall sleeping on the blacktop is a good one love it when he uses that drum with his cowboy boot, he hot❤❤❤
You should definitely listen to Tyler Childers he’s amazing
That voice is awesome
I tried to search your channel for Kaleo and this come up so I will comment here. You MUST have a listen to Kaleo. A band from Iceland. Best voice EVER.
he sings some songs on Yellowstone with Kevin Costner
He grew up on my street.
His dad was premier of Saskatchewan.
Reminds me a bit of the vocal effects Leon Redbone was famous for.
@The Vocalyst If you would like to hear some old Colter Wall interviews. You might like this. Just type in to CZcams.
> W.B. Walker's Old Soul Video Show: Episode 7 - Ol Brother Colter Wall <
You can find a lot of other great stuff here as well like, Old Tyler Childers, Logan Halstead - Coal River, Etc...
More to Dingess, WV than most people might think. Just need to look a little closer.
Like singing through the pain of choking on your tongue.
Colter is as Western as a worn out pair of boots. 🤘🏻
Loved this reaction! Watched it twice now! You should do Tyler Childers, too!
He uses his tongue to close his Sinus cavity off, and that's how he gets the hollow echo in his voice.
Does anyone else hear a lot of Johnny Cash in his music?
Great, very stripped down bluesy sound with a bit of country twist. This song tells the story of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the Devil down at the crossroads.
Sleep Token has an awesome singer , incredible voice.
You need, if you haven't, to watch Shakey Graves - Roll the Bones(AUDIO TREE LIVE)
Also the official video for Late July
It’s sleeping on blacktop for me. Or 13 Silver Dollaaaaaarssss(and my miiiiiiind!! 🎶)
To me, it has a blue grass and zydeco and country sound all in one to me
Pretty sure colter was around 18 when he made this video which is even crazier. I think it’s almost 10 years old. I thought he was a 40yo when I first heard his music way back when on Spotify
I just noticed that this song has a vaudeville cadence to it at times..
You should listen to Tyler Childers! His song shake the frost is absolutely beautiful
First time to your channel. I enjoyed this. Tyler Childers would be a good follow up for contemporary voice comparison.
John Farnham. Help live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra I promise it will take your breath away
he's unique
People are missing that his tongue position is cuz he has a lip packed🤣 4:30
You will
Love Taylor Mcall!
He stated later that going that deep was actually hurting his voice--so he doesn't go as gritty now.
The drums are him to
Cool..bluesy is always cool like yòu..
Love him. To check out pokey lafarge
Her face when he opened his mouth 😂
Morgan Wallen’s ‘Don’t Think Jesus’ is super cool. Would make a great reaction video.
Sierra Ferrell- in dreams
Can we get some Marcus King Band? Maybe "Goodbye Carolina" or "Dyin"
I think she just fell in love
@the vocalist you should check out Tyler Childers “nose on the grindstone” he has a great voice too.
Very JOHNNY CASH Esq... THROATY.!! I think that's the word you were looking for..?
😉👍💯🙏
Just at the start, I see a proper scientific outlook here. I can immediately almost replicate Colter's sound, just by knowing it is physics.
Keep in mind he was 19 when he did this!!
Can we officially call it “pig”? Country boys are probably in.
HIs newer music is without the deep tone. He was forcing it and couldn't keep doing it without harming his voice. He had to own up to it in 2020. His newer stuff and 'regular' voice isn't bad at all, but it's nowhere as unique as what this sounded like, I think. I still listen to this pretty often, it's just so bluesy and homey, something you don't hear much these days.
I personally like his newer stuff better 😂
Colter and I have a mutual friend. He's from my neck of the woods.
