What triggered Sabos' memory was actually something that fell through translation. Admiral Akainus real name is Sakazuki, which is a word in japanese that translates to the ritual in which people drink sake and become family. So when Sabo read the paper he read something among the lines of:
    Luffy
    Sakazuki (Three cups)
    Ace
    DEAD
And that's when his memeory kicked in.

Corazon left such a big mark on Law from the very obvious stuff like his jolly roger, his crew's name, his tattoos, having his name on the back of the coat he wears in dressrosa but also just how he dresses. Law has adopted Cora's fashion sense and even wears feathers at time (his outfit he wore on the sunny from punk hazard to dressrosa for example)

small thing to remeber, Doffy was reading about white town after he met Law, he wanted to learn what happened to this kid, he cared for the Doffy fam too, he stood up for Pika"s voice, never made fun of Pink, "protected" baby 5 from worse guys, and even with what he was planning for Cora, he didnt want to kill his family again. you could even tell he was upset about Vergo and remorseful about Monet, Doffy was a monster of a person, and no doubt he was manipulating them all, but he cared at least a bit about them all.

    • @cssnssn
      @cssnssn Před rokem +10

Yeah. Doflamingo is a very bad person who does terrible stuff, but you really have to appreciate how he looks after and cares about his crew

    • @adrianrui
      @adrianrui Před 9 měsíci

I mean, he ordered Monet to kill herself rather than doing literally anything to save her (with Buffalo and Baby 5 on the way too) and only got upset at her death when it happened in a way that stopped him from fulfilling his ambitions and screwed up his plans; someone who really liked their crew, like Luffy, would have tried to help her first and dealt with the dangers of Kaidou or tried to recapture Caesar later instead of ordering her to *commit suicide for his selfish ambitions*. Doffy makes it a point to know his crew's weaknesses very, very well so he can manipulate them, and does it so well that they're willing to die for him, but when push comes to shove he couldn't care if they lived or died.@@cssnssn

    • @adrianrui
      @adrianrui Před 9 měsíci

Remorse is a strong word seeing as he only displays anything resembling it in the moments where he's getting her to kill herself just so he can keep running his SMILE empire and avoid Kaidou. If he cared about her or Vergo at all, or anywhere near as much as he pretends to, he'd have at least tried to order them to get out of there and figured out what to do later; he only gets genuinely upset at Monet's death when he realizes she was killed without setting off the weapon on Punk Hazard. He was fully prepared to sacrifice Cora by convincing him to take the Ope Ope no Mi-ostensibly to save Law, but it's made very clear he wants Cora to die and give him the eternal life surgery. He's *protective* of his crew, but only insofar as he sees them as extensions of himself, which is why he's willing to sanction the murder of anyone who makes fun of Pica's voice but calls Trebol worthless the second he loses in battle; they're *his* family, so anyone else slighting them is slighting him, but they're no longer family once he's decided they're no longer useful. It's why Cora instantly knows that he needs to protect Law when he hears his name, Law who's at this point a member of the Donquixote family who Doffy should theoretically care for like the others, because he knows Doffy will gladly kill the child he adopted, a member of his family, if he thinks Law having a D initial might *possibly* interfere with his ambitions. Luffy cares for his crew in an unselfish way and will protect them no matter what, even against their will, and he'd never dream of ordering one of them to die for his goals. It's heavily implied that Law loves the Heart Pirates enough to leave them in Zou for their safety while he tries to take revenge on Doffy, even if they'd be willing to risk their lives for him in Dressrossa, because its *his* problem and he even feels so bad risking Luffy's life that he feels he can't be allowed to live if Luffy dies fighting Doffy on his behalf. Doffy's "love" is deeply abusive and superficial and only exists insofar as his family obeys him slavishly and can help further his ambitions, and their lives and happiness are secondary to that; he's just smart enough to know that in order to maintain a crew of loyal executives, he needs to know them well enough to exploit their weaknesses and make them love him or else they'd have no reason to continue serving him.
Doffy's a great character because he's a heartless, manipulative person who is devoid of empathy, but he's *so good* at that manipulating people that he tricks both the Donquixote family and even the audience into thinking he truly cares about them despite very clear evidence to the contrary.

Dressrosa is an incredible arc. Sadly a lot of people actually saw the anime, which really dragged out the arc. But in the manga it's really great. Law and Corazon are incredible, Dofflamingo is the best villain, Gear 4, Fujitora, Sabo, Zoro cutting Picca, Rebec a and Kyros, Luffys Grand fleet, everything is great.

god i am SO GLAD dressrosa is your favorite arc. it's always been mine, but so many people got turned off by the anime pacing of the coliseum that they end up being blind to how INSANELY beautiful its story is. the theme of love in this arc is wonderfully handled and has always hit home for me. oda lets the concept branch in so many directions, and all of them resonate so deeply, even the more out there ones like señor pink or bellamy which you don't initially expect to go down that path. ultimately it's basically everything i love about one piece in a single arc-making you care deeply for its themes and characters in the most surprising yet satisfying ways.

Zatoichi is a blind swordsman who wanders from town to town, earning a living by giving massages. Both Doflamingo and a character whose backstory hasn't come up for you yet (I think it will 2 arcs from now..) had a tragic backstory that was immediately followed by being 'adopted' or otherwise guided by people who had malicious intent. In Doflamingo's case, Trebol was the one who gave him the gun he used to kill his own father, and enabled everything else he did afterwards. The other character I'm referring to had a tragic childhood, and was then also taken in/led around by someone who encouraged their worst instincts.
Contrast this to someone like Law who had a tragic backstory but then was taken in and guided by Cora who had a pure heart and only wanted the best for Law. When children with extraordinary abilities are not guided by those with kind hearts, their eventual fate is far worse. Same for Kyros - he got revenge for his friend but would have probably been executed if King Riku hadn't intervened and helped him find a path of goodness.
Imagine if Doflamingo hadn't ever run into Trebol, and instead was confronted with a parent figure who could have put him on a path for good? We'll never know how things could have turned out differently.

11:40 That's a common complain about the Sabo situation. Yes, you can justify Sabo not knowing, to some extent you can justify Luffy not knowing (he doesn't read the newspapers or checks bounty posters for anyone other than his crew), but Ace not knowing when he was Whitebeard's Second Division Commander sounds a bit iffy.
Also, on a sidenote, the ritual of sharing a cup of sake to become brothers, or parent and child, is called Sakazuki. Sakazuki is also the real name of Akainu, so in that news article Sabo read "Ace," "Luffy" and "Sakazuki." Add that to the shock of the death, and that's why that was the one to trigger his memories, and not any other article about Luffy (we've seen a few) or Ace (like the ones about him being in prison, or his execution being announced that we saw in Sabaody (Drake was reading it) and in Amazon Lily).

You're right, Zoro does not get the attention he deserves post-timeskip. Stuff like that is kinda why I personally have to separate pre and post-timeskip arcs when I discuss favorites. Tbh non of the Strawhats outside of Luffy get enough attention despite the increasing length of the arcs, and it brings down the narrative as a whole. You feel less and less connected to the conflict as the Strawhat crew is less involved, but the story just keeps chugging along and stuff keeps happening. That being said... theres an arc coming up that fixes most of those issues, so that's exciting.

No, I mean, that was the whole point between Doffy and Corazon. One fell into bad hands and one fell into good hands and both were partly a product of how they were raised. If the paths had been swapped, things may have been very different. Would Doffy have fallen so far? Probably not. Would Corazon have been so selfless and good? Probably not.
Children are a product of their environment.
The saddest thing is that Doflamingo never got the chance to have a possible good because the people who took him pushed him deeper into the darkness. The true irony is that Law was set to go on the same path as Doffy - was very much a mirror of Doffy in his youth, someone who lost everything he loved and was in so much anger and pain - but was given a good path to follow. It shows that if given a good path Doffy may have been able to change like Law did, alas, that never happened.

One thing I always like to point out when people reach this point, are the many parallels between Alabasta and Dressrosa. It's really easy to connect both arcs, Dressrosa is what would've become of Alabasta if Crocodile succeeded, you have a Warlord taking over a country from a good King, and Luffy protecting it because he became friends with the teenager princess, Fujitora refusing to cover up the Strawhats involvement as Smoker was forced to do, and more. But the one parallel I love is how Luffy's finishing blow is mirrored, and it reflects how both Doflamingo and Crocodile operated.
    * Luffy punched Croc up from the shadows of the underground where he hid, and into the light for everyone to see. The rain starts to fall.
    * Luffy punched Doffy from the skies, where he sat as a puppeteer, as a god, and into the ground, on the same level as anyone else. The birdcage disappears.
I love how those two scenes play side by side

So happy you like Dressrosa so much!
I first experienced it in the anime and I have totally loved it, even though people keep complaining about pacing issues. My only complaint for the anime version is that they overused some parts of Rebecca's backstory so much that I genuinely felt annoyed at some point (and I felt guilty about it because it is truly tragic and heartbreaking).

  • @WatanukiProductions
    @WatanukiProductions Před rokem

Dressrosa is so jam packed with amazing backstories: Doflamingo's backstory, Law's backstory, Rebecca/Kyro's/Riku's backstories, Baby 5's backstory, and Senor PInk's backstory.
Every one got me to tear up at some point. Kyro's wearing gloves when playing with his own daughter because he believes his hands are soiled and then he becomes a toy and can never feel her touch, absolutely ruined me. Rebecca breaking down when her memories of Kyro's come back and she connects the toy soldier to the lost memories of her father and says "I have a father!"
I still haven't gotten over the fact that Oda managed to take a character as ridiculous as Senor Pink and make me love him and ache for him. Seeing how Doflamingo twisted Baby 5's broken need to be 'needed' and used it rather then helping her to heal and how an 'enemy' finally told her what she needed to hear and committed to her.
The love Homing felt for his kids, he doesn't plea for his life when Doflamingo wants to kill him, he accepts it and instead says "Doflamingo, Rosinante, I'm sorry you had to have a father like me."
How despite all his suffering Corazon internalizes his dad's beliefs and becomes one of the best most kind hearted men in a series absolutely stuffed to the brim with good people. Giving up everything for Law's sake. Clinging desperately to life so that his devil fruit power won't fade so Law can cry and scream without being caught by Doflamingo.
Possibly the most emotionally devastating arc. Would probably be tiered higher but the anime adaptation is extremely bad, everything from Marineford onward is very badly paced in the anime but Dressrosa was the worst it ever got, with things like Rebecca's flashback being shown 48 times really dragging the whole thing down. (One Pace version is mostly great though.)

Honestly, the Dressrosa arc is filled with so much amazing character work that it boggles the mind that Oda got it right so many times on so many levels with the amount of characters thrown into it. Like Senor Pink is a walking testament to "Let him cook" or "let him write" in this case. Absolutely nobody going into this arc ever expects the twist on why he's wearing baby clothes and we're all crying along with him by the end of his fight with Franky. Side note though: Pink was part of Doflamingo's crew during his time with his wife and before his son died. Unsure what caused him to join up, but I feel like his wife and child were more of an escape from that life; like it was his chance to have the life that he probably never thought he could given his history of piracy.
Meanwhile, Baby 5 wins the award for most compact and powerful backstory explaining that the actions that made her specific running gag up to this point were, in fact, a trauma response to the one two punch of her own mother abandoning her and saying that nobody needed her. This being followed by Lao G cheerfully explaining how useful that trauma was showed how broken Doflamingo's "family" really is. That they absolutely recognized what was wrong with her, but they chose to exploit it rather than help her overcome it. The most they ever did was step in to prevent anyone (her various "fiances") from taking her away because it would ruin their own plans. They still allowed her behavior to run so wild that she was in massive debt due to all the newspaper subscriptions she had and various other schemes she fell for. Never mind actual familia members also taking advantage of this, like Buffalo; who specifically pointed out the behavior and then used it to borrow gambling money from her in the same breath. All of this showed that they were totally okay with her reinforcing said trauma and suffering from that behavior so long as it didn't rock their own boat. Then along comes our boi, Sai who was the first person to tell her "she was getting it all wrong" and being the first person to basically say "This behavior is not okay, and it's not okay that nobody has tried to help you before now."
Yes Sugar and her power are terrifying and yes she is also a grown ass adult inside a child's body because she stopped aging when she got her devil fruit. Fun fact that they never actually mention within the story - Sugar is Monet's (Punk Hazard Bird lady) sister.
Bellamy really got me to feel bad for him and he can almost be a kind of negative parallel to Luffy's own journey. He was someone who set out as a pirate to impress a specific idol that he looked up to; only for said idol to treat him like trash and throw him away when he no longer amused him. But yeah, the best way I can describe the relationship and Bellamy's pain in the same sentence is that Doflamingo was to Bellamy as Shanks is to Luffy. So if you can imagine the kind of pain that Luffy would go through if he finally made it to Shanks only to be told "You're trash and will never be more than a thug. We are not the same" then you can imagine what Bellamy is going through and worse since he literally devoted himself to this man only to have it spat back in his face. With this in mind, seeing the smoldering ruins that used to be Bellamy's self-esteem makes a lot more sense.
I understand the critic with Robin, you definitely aren't the only one to have it, but I can assure that she gets her time in some upcoming arcs. Time for her following her own path and also time where she breaks some bitches who had it coming.
To your point that Cavendish reminds you of Sanji, I don't know if you watched any anime clips that had them, but Cavendish and Bartolomeo have blond and green hair respectively; yet another best friend rivalry is born between a pair of blond and green haired characters!
Usopp's line before he makes the shot, "I don't want to see the seas without you in it" really hits in that moment. This was a shot not only to save the country, but to also save his best friend. You aren't in the minority when it comes to people getting mad at Usopp for his actions earlier in the arc. That said, people tend to forget that, as long as this arc is, it all takes place in the span of a single afternoon. Usopp is not really a character that's inclined to risk himself for people he's just met, but he will absolutely refuse to back down when it comes to the people he chooses to be his nakama. He stood up to his own nakama for the Merry, he went to Enies Lobby for Robin and he entire career as a Strawhat is to respond to the belief that Luffy has in him.
Corazon was too good for this world.
I think I'll cut off this novel here and just say that I'm looking forward to seeing you in Zou! Since you were mad at us not warning you, You aren't ready lol.

0:06 Even though I kinda saw it coming, but your letter shocked me at first ngl
0:26 Dressrosa is good, but somewhat controversial because of its length and especially because of the poorly paced anime.
1:51 that’s why the fandom keeps spreading the love to others!
4:35 this is such a good change by any One Piece fan.
5:51 yeah, Sugar’s devil fruit prevents her aging. So she’s a grown woman in a child’s body.
9:54 you and me have such a soft spot for Luffy’s love for his brothers. Crybaby Luffy is still my fav even if he isn’t a child anymore
17:15 in case you didn’t notice, Usopp has awakened his potential for Observational Haki here!
21:04 I love your take! Usually people only argue about nature vs nurture, but it’s a bit more complex than this.
22:54 Corazon means “heart” in Spanish and Law is tattooed with heart symbols AND calls his pirate crew the “heart pirates”
26:20 Law’s backstory is so brutal… No wonder he has so much hatred in his heart
28:00 Oda has such a sadistic mind to make Law cry so much in silence because of Corazon’s powers, but then Law being able to hear his own voice thus confirming Corazon’s death… So sadistic, but I love it
29:55 I’m so glad that you recognized Koala!
32:00 We do love our Barto! Did… Did you notice something different on Sanji’s bounty?
33:25 I love Luffy’s need for freedom and how the grand fleet just said “we reject your rejection” because now Luffy knows how others feel about his nonsense
Thank you for reviewing! I’m looking forward to the livestream

Wow you noticed that Bellamy has the same grit as Luffy.
He's my favorite character in the series/my favorite of in my mind the three biggest Luffy foil/parallels in the series (Blackbeard, Bellamy, Kid); it was very fun but also difficult defending him from fandom hate when Dressrosa was week to week.
I love that he learned about being a follower and instead went to find himself, rather than join the fleet even though Luffy is someone worth following.
Bellamy's stubborn but he's finally learned a little.
One thing (amongst a lot, he's very complex/thematically relevant) you might not have noticed about him Doflamingo told Bellamy the same thing Law told Tashigi, that the weak don't get to choose their way to die and Bellamy proceeded to try exactly that through suicide by Luffy, but ultimately still dancing to Doflamingo's strings just as he told Bellamy he was "free to do whatever, like he'd always been," while knowing Bellamy would still fight Luffy.
And ultimately Bellamy couldn't choose his place to die, being saved by Law.

Hey Amber how it been. I hope your day been well. Lol love the Shemp sound at the beginning. I like your Heart Pirates T shirt and cap. But yes this 2nd part arc was amazing. Law backstory, from losing his family, his relationship with Corzan and his time with the Donquixote Pirates was so sad but very well written. We also as well get Doflamingo backstory as well and how he was once a Celestial Dragon after his father gave up the title. In which Doflamingo loved the World Noble life and what it brings to him. To him and his family being hated by the locals from the country and to be force to live in a shack to only lose his mother from illness and grew to hate his father in which he eventually killed him and later on his own brother Corzan. The way you describe Doflamingo is the reason why the name Joker fits him. He remind me of the Joker from the DC Batman universe because they are so evil. What makes the character scarier is they're unpredictable.
Senor Pink backstory is so sad. It just shows yo shouldn't judge a book by it cover. Bellamy development in this arc was great as well. Sabo was great in this arc. And I like how Oda gave us Sabo POV for how he found out about Ace death. Cavendish is an interesting character. I find the other half of him Hakuba very interesting as well. Zoro vs Pica battle was amazing. Especially cool when he surround his sword around Haki. Usopp came in clutch when it came to defeating Sugar and stopping her from about to change Luffy and Law into toys. Robin and Frank was great in this 2nd half as well.
Corzan was amazing character. I like how his story and how he helped Law when he was kid and how his relationship with Law and his death is what shape Law to the character as we the audience see. Very similar to the relationship with Bell-mere with Nami. Oda is a great story teller. Kyros getting revenge on Diamante for killing his wife was good moment. Fujitora bowing and apologizing to the people of Dressrosa for the faults of the World Government was a great moment. Bartolomeo and Cavendish crack me up at the end of the arc. Luffy Gear Four design is cool and awesome. I hope you check it out in the anime episode 726. Seeing Luffy get allies in the Strawhat Fleet was a great moment to finish off the arc. But anyway I hope you have a wonderful day. Stay safe, stay positive, stay blessed and take care Queen of the Pirates.

Luffy really reverts to crybaby luffy when he around the people who he grew up with which is adorable. For ace and sabo not knowing each other my headcanon is that sabo being a revolutionary had always kept him hidden from the world as like you said only dragon is the most well known one as he is the leader and the most dangerous/wanted criminal so ace wouldn't have saw any picture of sabo. For sabo what triggered him to remember ace is sakazuki which means three cups with seeing luffy holding ace while he was dying out, as before he probably saw ace's bounty poster but nothing really gave him a trigger. It is a very plot convenient thread however I appreciate sabo role in the story and how different he is from ace and not just some clone to take his place. Ace was moreso a character who was meant to have heavy ramifications on luffy story as shown at marineford, while sabo is someone who has his own agenda to the overall story which you'll see more as you continue.

I think you are being too hard on Doffy, even though he really is not well in the head.
I personally take into account the environment he was born in (before leaving Marie Geoise) as well as his proclivity as a spoilt and selfish child. It's not that he killed his father and especially his brother without feeling anything.
Especially in Rocinante's case, I think he was truly hurt, both by Rocinante's betrayal and the fact that he had to kill him. For me, Doffy's problem is that he is so twisted that he really doesn't know how to love properly, not that he is really unfeeling. Because he's suffered he feels relief and even pleasure when others are suffering as well.
As another commenter said, we can see he really cares for his family. It's just that it's not the completely selfless way the StrawHats care for each other. Because Doffy is the way he is, he can only love in his own twisted way.
But he will always be my favourite Heavenly Demon 🖤
