This video show you how to install, replace, or change your shower trim if you want to upgrade to a nicer escutcheon plate and handle (we removed the chrome to replace with a brushed nickel). Also - the handle should remove easily, but if the hex screw is stripped or stuck, try this: (1) make sure you have the CORRECT size allan wrench, (2) spray with silicone, (3) tap hex screw with phillips drill bid using hammer while supporting the handle opposite then reverse slowly, (4) use a drill bit itself on reverse, and (5) tap hex screw using a sharp, thin flathead bit then after it "bites in" slowly reverse it out. You could also try putting a rubber band over any drill bits for better "grip". #5 worked for me! Tip: do NOT put new hex screw back in - go to hardware store and get exact size screw but with phillips head. FYI: I did not have to turn off water supply main to do this (just don't turn your handle, mess with the cartridge, remove the pin, or turn the brass metal bit into which your handle adapter screw sits). Oh, and don't pound too hard with the hammer!

Genius idea for the stripped screw! I'll have to back-pocket that one.

Good Idea with the drill bit. Have to get reverse drill bits. I'll try that.

Nicely done video. btw, according to other posts, Moen uses 7/64 allen screw not 3/32. Not all allen wrench sets include 7/64. Why we're all searching for the magic incantation for how to remove a stripped screw. I've tried everything, still haven't found a method that works. I must say, I'm very pleased that customer service at Moen sent me a free replacement cartridge (my reason for wanting the handle off). They offer a lifetime warranty on cartridges, so keep receipts or notes on when you put a new Moen handle/cartridge in. Someday you might want to put a new cartridge in.

my handle set screw shear off, lol, so i did a hole in the handle to have access to the phillips screw that hold the black piece and removed the screw and the hole handle came off, so there is another solution, but the handle is done. This is only for a emergency. nice tips do.

The black peice, handle adapter on mine is metal and seems to be fused on there, removed the screw and that oeice will not come off. Tried wd40 and then attempt to pry it off no luck. It has been on there 22 years, any ideas?

Did you let that wd40 soak and saturate for a day or two? Maybe multiple rotations of wd40 hits, jiggle, then let soak over span of several days. I’d prob call the plumber if that doesn’t work
