How To Replace Moen Trim Kit Without Changing Your Valve

  • Do you want to upgrade your Moen shower valve trim without replacing your existing shower valve?
    In this video, I'm going to show you exactly how to do that. We'll be replacing Moen's Standard Valve Trim with the "new" Moentrol Trim without even having to shut the water off to your house.
    You can buy the components that I used in this video here on Amazon:
    Moen Shower Valve Adapter Kit: amzn.to/2IHcWtu
    Moen Kingsley Trim Kit (For Moentrol): amzn.to/2DtDryn
    To clarify, the Moentrol is the most "recent" iteration of the Moen Standard Valve. Both valves use the 1225 cartridge which has that push/pull feature to open and close the valve. If you want to go the extra distance and replace your cartridge while replacing your trim, it's not a bad idea since you'll already have access to the valve...it's kind of like an oil change. Just make sure you shut off your water supply if you do this optional step!
    Moen 1225 Shower Valve Replacement Cartridge: amzn.to/2DycYj3
    While these valves are essentially the same, except the Moentrol has pressure balancing, the screw positions on the escutcheon plate are not.
    What does that mean? You need to first install Moen's shower valve adapter kit! Without this kit you will NOT be able to fasten the shower plate to the valve. And I'm sorry for the let down, but this adapter kit CANNOT be used to convert a Moen Posi Temp trim kit to Moentrol trim kit.
    In addition to the adapter kit, I'm using the Moen Kingsley Trim Kit which is specifically designed for the Moentrol Valve. The Kingsley style is not only Moen's most timeless look, but it's their least expensive. With all the parts constructed from metal, I figured this would be the most popular option for those of you watching. But don't let me completely persuade you, there are quite a few other styles of trim for the Moentrol valve that work just the same.
    If you've never replaced a trim kit before, it's really quite easy. All you'll need, in addition to the parts above, are the following tools:
    - Phillips Head Screw Driver (Power Drill will speed things up.)
    - Utility Knife
    - Pliers
    - 7/64 Allen Wrench (Moen doesn't seem to include this but it's needed to remove the set screw in the temperature limiter during install.)
    - Silicone Sealant (For an optional extra seal on the shower plate. Moen's plate already has a foam flange built in.)
    Follow my steps and you should have your new Moen Trim Kit installed in under 30 minutes!

    Awesome - short, sweet and to-the-point video! Exactly what I needed to confirm the trim update I wanted to perform with my legacy Moen Chateau 1225 standard valve in my 1980's house! Appreciate the links to the adapter plate. I think anytime you're servicing an exposed valve during any renovation or update it's smart to remove and inspect the cartridge; I'll be replacing the 1225 cartridge for sure since I know it's over 25-yrs (if not longer) since anyone touched it. Thanks for filming the details of the install.

    Very good video without getting sidetracked with filler and small talk like others, so thank you for that. I have already spent way more time than I should have, looking at everything I could find out about replacing my old trim with something more stylish and finally figured out what this video shows - ie. using the Moentrol Adaptor, and even had already decided on the Kingsley trim. I just wanted to watch the video to confirm. I do have one question - I saw a number of comments from reviewers on HD and can also see very clearly on your installation, that when completed, there is a fairly large "gap' between the handle and the trim plate. Is that really designed that way??

    Bit of a left-field question: I have the old Moen Chateau. I want to replace it and found this video helpful (though it's still difficult to search for trim kits that are labeled Moentrol, not sure what to do there).
    Anyway, right now, when I pull out on the handle to turn the shower on, the tub faucet pulls along with it. The trim plate has rotted open near the screws, so I'm hoping this is only because there's nothing to handle the pressure of a pull and not a larger issue with the pipes. Am I making sense?

      @theshowerheadstore  Před 4 lety

      I would suggest replacing the cartridge inside of the valve. You'll want the Moen 1225 Cartridge, which we sell on our website. It could be that your cartridge is really old, stuck and yanking on the valve. Here's the link to that part: www.theshowerheadstore.com/collections/accessories/products/moen-1225-single-handle-cartridge-oem-shower-replacement-part
      For the trim, yes, there are at least a dozen Moentrol style trim kits available, but the best value is the Moen Kingsley which we sell here: www.theshowerheadstore.com/collections/accessories/products/moen-kingsley-trim-kit

      Thanks for getting in touch regarding this. I will be more than happy to help you.
      Other trims can be used once the screw positions are the same as the adapter kit replacement. The standard valve is the valve that will pull out to turn on and push back in to shut off and adjust from left to right for temperature. For the old plate, the screws are at the bottom and the plate that Moen makes now has the screws diagonal way. You can find the Moen 145058 part that converts Standard Valve To Moentrol Valve here:

      You can only use Moen Moentrol trims. The other choices that you have, for cheap options, are those kits they sell at Home Depot that attempt to fit most types of valves. They come with a bunch of adapters and often get returned. I don't know that they would have these "universal" kits available in Polished Brass. I have very old Stanadyne handle, so does this adapter kit support?

      Hello Stanly, thanks for reaching out regarding this but the Moen Shower Valve Adapter Kit is specifically designed for the upgrading of a Moen shower valve trim without replacing the existing shower valve. This kit only works with the Moen Standard valves that has the 1200 or 1225 cartridge.
      Let me know if you have any other questions.

      No Stanly, the kit only works with the Moen Standard valves that has the 1200 or 1225 cartridge.

    Moen and all their valve/trim standards are confusing and needs to be cleaned-up. Case and point: The Moen exploded diagram for the Kingsley trim shows a 1222 cartridge as the needed cartridge.

      We would recommend contacting Moen for further clarification on those.

    I’m looking to get the Moen T2121brb. I have the adapter for the screw at 2/8. However it says equipped with posi-temp but built on Moen M-pact common valve system. Would this work for with the adapter for push/pull valve?

    How can I go from moentrol to positemp without ripping out my tiles? :(((

      Hi Anastasia,
      Unfortunately, there isn't a way. In order to change systems, you have to change the actual valve, and this means a major remodeling effort.

    I believe you have Moentrol and Positemp backwards. According to this video: czcams.com/video/38lO_MRVPHg/video.html, The moentrol is the pull type and turn for temp, while the positemp is just turn.

    • @theshowerheadstore
      @theshowerheadstore  Před 2 lety +1

      The Moentrol is the most "recent" iteration of the Moen Standard Valve. Both valves use the 1225 cartridge which has that push/pull feature to open and close the valve. I'm sorry for the let down, but this adapter kit CANNOT be used to convert a Moen Posi Temp trim kit to Moentrol trim kit. Posi temp will use the 1222 cartridge

      Justin Ball here, just saw this comment. I don't think I mis-spoke. Moentrol is the pull type, posi-temp is the turn type. 100%

      @@theshowerheadstore thank you for adding. I’m trying to figure out how to change update the old push pull plastic knob to a new trim. So this adapter in this video should do it if the holes align

    • @theshowerheadstore
      @theshowerheadstore  Před 2 lety

      @@RiseInspirePersevere If your old Trim Plate has the screws holes at the bottom then the adapter in the video will work since the Trim plates that Moen are making now has the screws holes setup diagonally.

    What is "this piece" at 08:02? Moen factory instructions are useless. The only utility one can get out of Moen instructions is to use the paper it's printed on as fire starter material.

    • @theshowerheadstore
      @theshowerheadstore  Před 2 lety

      The part that you are referring to is apart of the stop tube that comes with the Trim. For installation, you would have to remove that little piece and the Allen key screw head in order to install the stop tube. After which, you will connect that small part back and insert Allen Key screw head.
