The disclosure part is nice, not only gives some insight on why exactly these products were chosen and if there was any encouragement from the manufacturer to include it but also gives a better understanding of how useful these tools can actually be
Avoid purchasing LTT Screw drivers; they are overpriced and of poor quality.
Instead, consider investing in a Klein Tools Precision Screwdriver, which comes with 27 bits for $20.

is it legal/illegal if you put disclosure in the end of the video instead of start in USA/Canada?

The charge-o-matic thing is clearly a repurposed garden watering controller, but that's actually a pretty ingenious way to use it. There are a lot of things that would benefit from being charged for like and hour or two a month to keep them alive.

Yeah, basically.
It's a simple way to get things done, but personally I'd rather get a smart plug. All of mine have a timer function, which is a little less convenient, but it's around $10 per instead of $30. It could also be programmed with a schedule, for example, only starting charging later so that it finishes charging shortly before you need it, or periodic short charging cycles for something that's plugged in indefinitely.
A smart plug with an app? And create a login and give your location details. Am I right?

While I agree personally, from watching WAN show and listening to how they do stuff, I feel like these comments are pointless. They know which videos get the most views better than anyone. So if they start producing something you feel is not worth watching, it probably means there are a huge number of people who think it is worth watching. Thus, when you say "we" care about this content, it means almost nothing. The replies you get will be from the people who agree with you and the (potentially huge) proportion of the population who disagrees will remain silent
Sadly, they're not. If you look at the handy tech Playlist, they don't really break a million views.
I do love the series though.
I like the wan show but there are only so many walking hours you can spend on CZcams and still maintain a job, a relationship, look after a pet etc. I do like the shorter videos I can dip in and out of as a result.
I really LOVE the idea of using your writers own at home projects like the deej for video ideas. I imagine many of the hobbies and things your staff is into will also be things your average viewer is into. This channel is usually a little more product focused but these open source things are really cool to see and I'm sure will also really boost the projects in the open source community.
Hey the disclosure part was the best part of this video. Do that more! Not only does it show great character but it also helps viewers understand your mindset, values and decision-making!
I missed these kind of videos soooo much, teaching cool DIY to your community is amazing!
As the local system integrator, I use one of the rechargeable blow-e-matrons all the time. Makes cleaning up used parts FAR faster than by hand and cheaper than canned air. Without the concerns with condensation or over-pressure from a compressor. Paired with microfiber cloths, spray cleaner, electrical cleaner, a toothbrush, rubbing alcohol, etc ... Covers 99% of those needs. Mine was less than $25usd on Amazon. - I also get asked by customers regularly about how often and how to clean their PCs and send them a link. A regular blow-dust can go a long way towards keeping thermals under control and increasing hardware lifespan.

The one I got was a portable vacuum but I just turn it backwards. Its a lot weaker than canned air though and has a hard time getting rid of heavy dust build up, so I bought one that plugs into the wall, it was like $50 and is just as strong as canned air.
Just hijacking your comment. If you're looking for something a step up from the blow-e-matron they were talking about in the video, the DataVac blower by Metrovac is amazing. I spent $100 on mine about ten years ago and it's still going strong. I find it way better than the USB rechargeable blowers, plus the blower engine comes with a 10 year warranty and it's made in the USA. Only negative is that you need to plug it in every time you want to use it
The one linked in the video is “currently unavailable”. Do you happen to have a link to yours? I have a corded one but the cord is not always convenient.
Condensation not a problem for average person with compressors, you have to use it a whole lot without draining before it happens.
i was really hoping the charge-o-matic would turn off by itself once it detects current consumption dropping dramatically :(
A Homewizard smart socket can be used for that. Requires a €1/mo subscription though.

You could certainly do that, but I'm not sure for most folks it would actually be a better solution for the problem it is supposed to solve by its naming. As it would still need a timer to turn back on and top the self discharge back up, and if using it as LTT seem to intend to - as a common controller for a whole bunch of devices the current will drop erratically as some devices finish, or when using it for something that slow charges only the current might be rather small and hard to read anyway.
Lol @@stalincat2457
That is actually a bad idea for lead acid and NiMH batteries that need to trickle charge at the end of the cycle -- the difference between trickle charging an almost full and completely full battery is very small for those chemistries.
All of these look GREAT. As does the extended disclosure bit at the end. And now I want to build the external soundboard. Good video.
Great tech hacks. The Dej volume controller is amazing and the USB valve is such a security gem. Who knew you could DIY and save so much? Definitely giving some of these a try.
The blower is also great for camping, specifically with regards to providing more oxygen to get a fire going better.
If you have a air pump for your air mattress, that works just as well for transforming the campfire into a furnace.

12V batteries, like the starter battery for a gas generator, are pretty well served by battery tenders, voltage sensing chargers that only charge when needed.
Yep, I keep smart battery tenders on my 2 golf carts, and rarely have trouble with them turning over the gas motors, & it's much cheaper to buy one than replacing the battery on my golf carts more often as they cost more than the big beefy battery in my F-150 crew cab lol!
Lead acid batteries like to be fully charged all the time. so keeping it on a charger 24/7 can be a good thing of course if the charger you are using has a float charging feature.
I really did miss the intro to LTT videos! so glad to see it back!!

Good job on adding the disclosure! I guess this is one of the good parts of the internal reflection
So awesome seeing you messing with arduino and pots, ive been trying to build my own midi controllers for a while
deej is awesome, been using mine for years! Some pc apps (e.g. corsair icue,...) take control of the com port so make sure they are not running if you run into problems
Same here! The case was the first thing I designed completely from scratch and is nearly perfect (only change I would make now is changing the code and adding modifier buttons to it)
Love these mini project vids - anything you can build with a cheap PI etc and I'm sold!
Awesome projects! I will definitely look into making a volume control slider.
The disclosure is a good idea!
I've been using Deej for a while, and it is great.
I switched to the MIDI mixer a bit back, since it is even easier to configure, has more features, and supports off the shelf midi controllers.
Discovering per-app volume control, nevertheless via MIDI, was a revelation after suffering with hardware mixing and trying to make 4 separate outputs work together without ground loops etc.
Took the easy route with a Korg Nanokontrol and MIDI Mixer. Well worth every penny... damn all the RCA/jack adapters. :D
I'm really happy to see the disclaimer / extra bit at the end. I truly believe if a company or individual vouches for something seriously, then they really should be at least using the products too. It's not always that simple, but knowing you guys are actively using those devices carries a lot more weight than a simple positive review.
This is the kind of video we all need. Hopefully there are more in this ""series"" as you called it.
love the disclosure of why you chose them at the end. really keeps it feeling honest
I love the disclosure segment!
Considering all the neat tech people build in their spare time and then put in github in formats that only geeks can understand, LTT could start hosting tech (guess-it-would-be) competitions for said neat things. I mean for a lot of the people sharing their neat toys just spreading the word could be rewarding enough but nothing stops you from giving out like 1k$ price or something.
DIY tech things are interesting but I usually give up after Arduino compiling doesn't work easily as documentation or tutorial claims, or I can't figure out which tiny electronics parts I actually need to make a thing.. Or if I have to order parts from 5 different places online, each promising delivery times from week to 2 months. My bookmarks are stuffed with neat projects, and my shelves are stocked with random electronics for forgotten projects.
Good to see the Deej! An alternative I've liked to talk about is using a Midi Controller with knobs and faders like the Korg Nanokontrol 2 and free software called Midi-Mixer. No building needed, just buy hardware, install software, assign programs to faders or knobs in the software, and bam: hardware controlled individual app volume control! Its awesome!
I use a nanoKontrol 2 with voicemeeter, so I can adjust individual app volumes, my own mic volume, and multiple output volumes (headset, speakers, etc) all on the same board. Voicemeeter also allows me to use a rackmounted external compressor, so I no longer get my ears blasted by people with very varied mic levels in zoom meetings!
thank you so much ive been asking for something like this for a long while
i dont understand why you need different volume knobs for each program instead of just 1 for everything?
@@mychamycha27customization + finer control
for example, I use a controller with midimixer to specifically control Spotify and my browser volumes, this lets me leave my in-app volumes at 100% (like a yt video or the spotify slider), and instead I can use the tactile control to change the windows "master" volume for the app
it's convenient compared to having to change the volume by either opening the app and setting the volume or opening eartrumpet/the windows audio menu and adjusting it there
@@mychamycha27Sometimes you want some things louder than others and don't want to navigate through a bunch of software menus to do it. I know I personally have to do this a lot when gaming with my friends, to balance my voice chat, music and game audio how I like it.

Great video! I bought a volume knob a while back and swear by the physical controls, but if I knew I could have built one for cheap I would have done so instead. Definitely more of these kinds of videos. Raspberry Pi, Arduino or similar projects is a great use of LTT's resources.

Ive had one of those Air Blowers for almost a year now and its saved me so much money and hassle compared to the cheap cans of compressed air i was buying from the dollar store for $4+/can. I found that the Air Blower is even powerful enough to inflate a twin size air mattress, and the USB-C charging makes it really easy to recharge the same as any of my other devices
I've looked into them before and my biggest question is the battery - how is it holding up after a longer period? Any idea how easy it is to replace?
Do you have a model recommendation? I bought one and found the blowing to be fairly weak compared to a can of air.

The usb blower even got a better version with a additional attachment that you can put on the other end, making it 'suck'. Comes with a filter and container to just vaccuum up stuff. Yeah, not super powerfull, but its a great addition to the device.
I made something similar to the Deej controller a few years ago, but it used MIDI instead. Route that to Voicemeeter, and it's a pretty nice setup!
I started with making a Deej controller then later used a different arduino sketch to make it a MIDI controller for Voicemeeter.

I bought an air duster/vacuum combo... I actually really like it for working on computers. It blowsd air out of a thin tube in one mode and vacuums into a little chamber in the other mode, the vacuum has an extendable bristle brush that lets you brush dust while vacuuming it at the same time. It doesn't blow as hard as canned air, but frankly it was $20 and a 3 pack of canned air is almost that much, so it was an easy switch for me.
The Deej is what I've been wanting for YEARS, but ngl completely forgot I wanted over all those years. You gave me an amazing project to work on!

YAY THIS SERIES IS BACK!!!!
In the lat Handy Tech Video Linus recommended the Pinecil.
I bought it, and I have to say it's actually so useful. Thanks for that recommendation. I never soldered so much before haha.
I bought that exact air duster last week while trying to find compressed air cans. It's been very successful so far and I've only slightly damaged my lungs from all the dust in the air.
I'm trying to pretend like I don't care that Linus shaved his beard but I can't lie I feel slighted.

That volume mixer solution is way more work than it's worth, even if it's not that much work. I'm not going to constantly be adjusting these individual volumes that often, and the few times I do it's just way easier to open the volume mixer with a quick click of my mouse.

The Deej is absolutely amazing and I had been looking into it for a while myself before buying a great GoXLR knockoff for $100 CDN. It's honestly really awesome though.
I'm pretty sure I have that same rechargeable duster, or at least a rebrand of it.
I do something similar with my rechargable batteries for lawnmowers/snowblowers/pool vac with smart outlets and some Home Assistant code if they aren't capable of doing what I want them to do myself. When I think I want to mow my lawn, I ask google to turn on the outlets for the batteries, and then they aut shutoff after an hour or two, making sure they are charged but not overcharged (hopefully).
Great video, super handy!
I don't really think diy stuff should be counted as tech under $100 they should have their own category

I really enjoyed having the sponsor section one ‘bit’ deeper into the video. For me at least, it made it easier to stay attentive and engaged, without that instant neck breaking non-sequitur from the intro.
