There is something so funny about Hank watching Puss in Boots 2 and thinking “he just like me fr” and I’m here for it. So lovely and insightful as always.
LOL
he just like me fr
That's part 3 of puss in boots
I mean, it's... a cat... wearing boots. Yet somehow so Hank.
😭
“John, I’ve finally found *my* Penguins of Madagascar” was just an excellent closing line. Really appreciated your insights here, Hank. 💚
Idgaf that the ending of this was spoiled for me bc, like with all great stories, it’s the presentation, the way it unfolds, and THIS UNFOLDED SO WONDERFULLY 😭😭😭
@@rashadkafeel Penguins of Madagascar is a special movie for John, he mentioned it many times before and even wrote about it in his newest book the Anthropocene reviewed!
And they're both DreamWorks movies.
@@rashadkafeelyou can also refer to the video “John Reviews Kids Movies” based on a search I just did trying to remember.
I may not be a nerdfighter back when it was Brotherhood2.0, but I do remember that positive Penguins movie review
Just 🤌🏻🤌🏻 I love the content these brothers who love each other put out. And I'm so glad Hank found his Penguins of Madagascar ❤😂
"You can sing a song to 85,000 people, and they'll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons" - Dave Grohl. Although it may not be music, it still applies.
God, that's a fantastic quote, I'm remembering that one.
+
Dave Grohl is an artist who has live his life to the fullest. He's dealt with all the big tragedies'; " Loss, Addiction, Trauma", and yet has found not only meaning in his life, but strength, perseverance, and power in his art. He is truly a man whose wisdom was well earned, and worthy of a listen.
@@RyanRex Weirdly, even though his music is in my wheelhouse, I mostly like him for the character he presents. He's so consequently bringing out the best in people, bringing joy being thoughtful, and at the same time being such a rockstar.
Every thing about the video is confusing whats people talk about
The line about Orin having “a heart of - he’s six, he’s working on it” really got me. I babysit a six year old boy and honestly, nothing could ever be more true.
I had to pause the video on that line and finish laughing. My son is 8 and... it was the most relatable line ever.
LOL I LOVED THAT TOO
My 7 year old simply stated that he's neither good nor bad. He's both.
I have lots of nieces and nephews and yeah. They are sweet, but man can they be mean as hell at times. Especially when they are in the 4-8 range. They are getting smart enough to notice hurtful things, but not quite to the point of knowing how to not say them (or know its best to choose not to)
@@SailorYuki Wise beyond his years, that one.
Antonio Banderez shared that this movie was intensely personal to him and he helped shape its direction because of his experience after having a heart attack and the fear and sense of mortality that it caused him. The parallels to a CZcamsr are certainly there, since already built into the story is the allegory of Antonio Banderez' life as a performer.
Edit: Banderas
That's so smart lol. Choosing an actor that actually braved death I mean.
He makes a terrific puss in boots. Funny to realise this might be the role he is most remembered for.
@@vezokpirakaThey didn’t choose him for that, interestingly enough. He’s been Puss in Boots since Shrek 2 in the mid-2000s. He had his heart attack in 2017.
Pretty sure they chose him because Antonio was famously Zorro and transposing this to Puss in Boots was PEAK humour in the 2000s 😂
*Banderas.
wow, hank saying “facing your own mortality as a middle-aged performer” was exactly spot-on then!!!
I think it's safe to say, Mr. Green, that your kid has the heart of a child.
Like Steven King, does he keep it in a jar on his desk? (Which is what King once jokingly alleged.)
is that eggman or the autobot symbol upside down in your pfp lmao
@@expandapantsii341 Maybe both?
I recommend Puss and Boots to everyone. My husband and I even got made fun of because we liked a "kids movie." We are like, "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! IT'S SO GOOD!"
It’s the same for people who think of all animation as “childish”. They choose to look away from an entire medium of content because of their own weird biases, and that’s literally just their own loss.
welcome to the average animation fan experience
you wouldn't believe how hard it is to bring non-initiated folks
there's this one show Arcane, it's about a two cities caught in the midst of a drug/class/arms race and regular war
it's got everything one could ask for in an adult narrative
you got politics, you got violent action, murder, class struggle, slums ridden with war time orphans, drug addicts, drug dealers, corrupt politics, corrupt cops, good cops, lbgtq+ characters (yes multiple), scientist getting caught in the midst of politics forcing their creating into weapons
you name it arcane has it
if you were to describe it only by those aspects you could be talking about Breaking Bad and/ or Oppenheimer for god's sake
now try and convince adults to watch this very much adult animated show and they be like ''nah it's for kids''
Honestly, those people are naive and shallow. All truly great kids media is great because there's real depth to it. So many people grow up and think that kids are dumb and part of adulthood is realizing everything you felt and believed and enjoyed as a child is foolish and must be left behind on the road to maturity. But this is a pale, facile image of maturity favored by a delusional norm of modern social convention.
True maturity does not scoff at children, or the things made by or for them. The wise ones know it's all real.
@@matheussanthiago9685
YES. THE PEOPLE WHO JUST REFUSE TO WATCH STUFF BECAUSE IT’S “FOR KIDS” OR “MADE BY [insert brand name here]”. People who Judge before Even Watching the whole Media. It’s just so Frustrating.
One of My Closest Friends Refuses to Watch Arcane Just because “It’s a League of Legends show.” He’s a History Buff and Love Class Theory. I Can Never Discuss the Themes of Class Warfare with him in the Show, because he’s completely Wilfully Ignorant of it.
My favorite tv show has become Bluey. A show marketed toward preschoolers but most episodes are like a 7 minute therapy session made for adults.
A little secret I appreciated in this film is that Death's whistle tune has 9 beats for each of Puss's 9 lives. After Puss confronts Death the final of his whistles finishes with a more uplifting tune where the last beat is in a more positive note, indicating that Boots' ultimate life will be one of enlightenment and tranquility now that he has accepted his mortality.
WOAH, good catch there
I’m counting 11 notes over 8 beats, so I’m confused
There’s tons of little details in the movie, including shots of Death in the background within the crowd. When the movie is recounting Puss’s lives, you can see little pictures of Death in the corner of the title cards. And when Puss is drinking milk at the bar, there are 8 empty glasses
@@coltafananalso, in the fight with the giant of Del Mar, Puss is thrown into a building where he slams through, get this, 8 WALLS. Additionally, the bell that the giant uses as a makeshift weapon rings 8 times as well, including the time it drops on Puss. Very apropos
I fully expected the wolf to whistle the Dies Iræ melody
I used to work at a hospital, and one of the "best" parts for me was working with death and the dying. And I learned very quickly that what the dying want, and need, to hear when they feel the Wolf approaching, is not "You'll be fine". It's "I will be here with you".
I've made it through the video with dried eyes, and then you hit me with this... Right in the feels. Thank you, I will remember and do my best standing with family and friends when they need it. This comment had no right being this deep and good, just as the movie I guess.
This is so important - esp. when dealing with children who are dying or in danger of death. Don´t lie to them, it makes them so alone.
Learned this firsthand as I faced back to back passings of close family members, one of which was my grandmother, she was closest to me and the day before I passing I sat by her side the whole time, holding her hand and quietly telling her I'm here. I didn't want to disturb her, so I always spoke in a hushed tone, I already knew just how much pain she was in and it felt like that silent companionship was the only thing to help her. She was in pain like that for a long time, but passed peacefully the next morning, as if she was asleep. I really do believe that is all that is needed for someone who is dying to pass peacefully like that, closure.
@@whyhesoears Well said. Thank you, and thanks to everyone in the thread for their perspectives.
“He has a heart of… he’s six you know he’s working on it” is such an amazingly hilarious line.
"An Amazingly Hilarious Line" sounds like it would be Hank's third book

@@Little1Cavereally? Wow, I hear their job is hard, so I hope they manage to improve things for themselves.
The reason this movie is about Puss in Boots wrestling with his own mortality, is because while it was in production hell, Antonio Banderas was hospitalized due to a heart attack and it completely changed his perspective on life. The sincerity of this movie is unmistakable, because it comes from experience.
"John I've finally found my penguins of Madagascar" is unexpectedly eye-opening and beautiful
I don’t get it
I definitely want to know the source of that line. Did John fall in love with penguins?
There is an Anthropocene Reviewed epsidode where john talks about the Penguins of Madagascar and the small pox vaccine, I would listen to it to get John's thoughts on the movie!
@@queersinthewoodsjohn has stated his love of the Penguins of Madagascar, a movie about the skewed and deeply bias-ridden ways humans assign value to animals and nature.
Who's John?
Hank is REALLY dedicated to his journey of meaning
Hank having full on existential realizations because of the Puss in Boots movie is exactly the kind of quality content I watch the vlogbrothers for.
We saw the movie the week it came out. For folks with anxiety the part where he has a panic attack was deep. I can't recall any of their movies this good at perceiving how anxiety looks and feels. There are kids who can relate so this became an excellent movie for both kids and adults alike.❤
yes this is why we need more good kids animated movies.
Yes! And they didn’t cheapen the moment by making Perrito do an abrupt gag either. Perrito understood the gravity of the situation and helped ground Puss like a good therapy dog would do. In kids movies, they sometimes have a heavy scene and then jump to a terrible joke from the comedic relief character.

So I already watched this on hankschannel (thanks for that happy accident, Hank!). I hope Hank knows the audience doesn’t need him to be perfect. Heck, I don’t, and I doubt anyone looks up to him more than I do. One year ago I was trying to find work in SciComm, now I’m the national science communicator for my country’s public broadcaster and I get to talk about science on national TV every day. That’s thanks, in part, to Hank Green himself giving me advice (and looking at my house) on an Awesome Socks Club livestream. Sure, it wasn’t the only reason, but I swear it was one of the most important. I’m living my dream thanks to him - but as much as I look up to him, even I recognize he’s just a person. I hope he knows we know that, and we love him anyway.
PS This is also one of my favourite movies :)
Edit: fixed my awkward grammar - I was rushing between radio hits :)

Congratulations on all your work!
That's awesome!!
There was so much love put into this movie. Not only is death visible foe all first 8 of puss' lives if you look closely (not in trailer) but the start death fight and the final death fight mirror each other, even down to the reflection shot in the sickles.
I made all of my friends watch this movie. I literally bought a physical dvd before it was on Netflix because I needed to watch it whenever it felt necessary. So glad you love it too and found your personal meaning in it ❤
I did the same exact thing! Down to buying the DVD lol It really is a wonderful film, it's definitely in my rotation of movies I comfort watch over and over.
I bought the physical disk because I don’t want to have to subscribe to anything to watch it again. It’s the only one in the franchise I own beside the first two Shreks.

I watched this out of desperation on a plane. Ended up shedding a tear or two and loving it.
Sheesh on what scenes
Seeing yourself represented is big, it's affirming and it's a relief - I'm glad you've been able to have that, Hank 💛
Surprisingly touching and deep movie. Aside: A different take is that the true villain isn't Death. It's Puss's unhealthy psyche. Depending on how you'd like to shift your perspective, Death could be construed as something of a hero. It drives Puss to acknowledge, address and begin to manage their issues. I recall having an epiphany of sorts a long time ago in a galaxy far far away after experiencing something that relayed the message that Death is your friend (the crystal ball is a bit hazy at the moment as to what this something was).
Anyhoo... thank you for the video. I hope you're on a path of recovery and wellness. Another aside: I just read my second of your brother's books (Turtles All the Way Down, which I loved) and just submitted a library loan for your first book, which I look forward to reading. All the best!
It’s really not that deep puss loses 8 lives gets anxiety by death normal thing
I don't even know why we are still debating the 4 minute rule, John. This is entry in more clear evidence that, under certain contexts and within reason, it is paying creative dividends.
I saw this in theaters and all I could think was this movie has no business being as good and as deep but I'm glad that it is.

I ADORED this movie when I first watched it. The deeper understanding of this video made me love it all the more. You made me connect an amazing movie with one of my favorite quotes by Alan Watts. "You must remember that the secret to all this is not to be afraid of fear. When you can really allow yourself to be afraid, and you don't resist the experience of fear, you are truly beginning to master fear."
This was really so cool to know about! Thank you so much for sharing! I think to me the death is just losing the reputation that I have, rather than dying, I constantly feel the urge to be perfect, to do whatever everyone else does and just forget to be me. I am so glad you decided to make a video on it, loved it!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time! So glad you enjoyed it thoroughly and it meant something to you like it did for most of us who watched it ❤️ fantastic tale about life and I hope more people see how great of a film this is; so much more than a children’s movie, definitely a family movie for everyone!
An under-ten-minute video essay by Hank Green discussing the lessons of mortality and overcoming fear of death in one of the preeminent animated films of modern times?! I love it. This video ticks all my boxes for interesting content. We intrinsically fear the wolf because the wolf is a tangible representation of all things we are taught to fear, but without the wolf, we would never be forced to reconcile the version of ourselves we are at present and the version of ourselves we want to become. In some ways, the wolf did kill a version of Puss in Boots, but the wolf also was the catalyst for a new life for Puss in Boots. A temporary dance with death inevitably lead to his renewed vigour for preserving life and becoming better at living. I love when films look pretty to kids but simultaneously force adults in the audience to think a little bit more deeply.
This is literally one of my favorite movies of all time, and I’m so happy you loved it. the movie made me cry but JUST HEARING YOUR DESCRIPTION OF IT ALSO MADE ME CRY… it’s just that good

I love it when kid’s movies face up to death (and/or other “heavy” topics). When I was a kid, watching Land Before Time let me know that I wasn’t the only one in the world to feel grief over the death of a loved one. I saw myself in Littlefoot’s sadness and I really needed it! Now I’m excited to see Puss in Boots 2. Not because I have cancer (uh, that I know of) but because I often feel as if I’m on the last of my nine lives. Great video. Thanks.
The timing of coming back from a week long holiday where my much younger brother wanted to watch this 7289 times is incredible
Being able to find this much meaning in movies and TV (even when we have to take a bit of a “books belong to their readers” perspective ) is always so wonderful. I felt similarly about the children’s movie Luca for different reasons.
